Why are the days named after planets and gods?

Romance languages often preserve the Latin planetary associations more visibly. French lundi points to the Moon, Spanish martes to Mars, and Italian mercoledì to Mercury. Religious renaming altered some days, especially words derived from the Lord’s Day or the Sabbath.

ISO 8601-1:2019 provides international rules for representing Gregorian dates and times in information exchange. The edition was reviewed and confirmed in 2024, so it remained current when this article was updated in 2026, although ISO lists a future revision as under development.
In ISO week notation, Monday is day 1 and Sunday is day 7. Week 1 is the week containing the year’s first Thursday. That rule can produce an ISO week-year boundary different from January 1, and some years therefore contain ISO week 53.
ISO’s Monday-first rule does not make Sunday-first calendars “wrong.” First-day conventions vary by religious tradition, locale, and software settings. ISO defines a standard for interoperable data, not the only culturally valid way to display a calendar.
