Reddit Post Timing Optimizer Calculator

Quick answer

A Reddit post timing optimizer compares your own posts by time slot. Enter the posts, total views, upvotes and comments for each slot. It works out the averages per post, ranks the slots and shows the lift against your own baseline. Reddit publishes no best time to post, so the answer comes from your data.

How to Use the Reddit Post Timing Optimizer

  1. Sort your past posts in one community into two to four time slots, such as weekday morning and weekend evening. Use your own time zone.
  2. Open post insights on each post. Add up the views, upvotes and comments for each slot and enter them with the number of posts.
  3. Pick what to rank by, then read the ranked table, the lift and the sample warning.

What each result tells you:

ResultWhat it means
Top posting slotThe slot with the highest average on the metric you rank by.
Lift vs your baselineHow far the top slot sits above the average of all your posts.
Your baselineThe average across every post you entered. It is your own figure.
Lead over next bestThe gap between first and second place.
Best upvotes per 1,000 viewsThe slot where viewers upvoted most often.
Smallest sampleThe slot with the fewest posts, the weakest part of the comparison.

What Is a Reddit Post Timing Optimizer?

A Reddit post timing optimizer is a tool that finds which posting slot has worked best for your own posts. It ranks slots by measured views, upvotes and comments. Reddit publishes no best time to post and no activity chart for communities.

Reddit does explain why timing can matter. Reddit Help says the Hot sort prioritizes posts that have recently been getting upvotes and comments. The New sort shows the newest posts first. Its page on recommendations lists vote count, comment history and post age among the factors used to rank a feed. Early votes and comments therefore help a post stay visible under that sort.

Each community has its own members and its own busy hours. This tool is for regular posters, community managers and moderators who want evidence from their own history. It does not predict a front-page result.

How Does the Timing Comparison Work?

The calculator turns each slot into per-post averages, pools all posts into one baseline, and ranks the slots against it.

Formula: Views per post = Total views / Posts. Upvotes per 1,000 views = Total upvotes / Total views x 1,000. Lift = Slot average / Baseline average - 1.
  1. Views, upvotes and comments are each divided by the posts in that slot. Each result is a mean.
  2. The baseline pools every slot: all views divided by all posts, and the same for upvotes and comments.
  3. Slots are sorted from highest to lowest on the metric you picked.
  4. Lift compares each slot with the baseline. A slot at 5,800 views against a baseline of 4,200 has a lift of +38.1%.

Reddit post insights list upvotes, comments, views, shares, reposts and awards. Views come with a graph of views per hour over the first 24 hours of a post.

Reddit Post Timing Example

Example values only, not benchmarks. A hobby poster reviews 28 posts in one community.

SlotPostsViews per postUpvotes per postComments per postUpvotes per 1,000 views
Weekend morning65,800245.029.042.2
Weekday morning84,800220.034.045.8
Weekday evening83,600190.042.052.8
Weekend evening62,600105.022.040.4
Baseline (all 28 posts)284,200192.132.645.7

Ranked by views, weekend morning wins with a lift of +38.1%. Ranked by comments, weekday evening wins with +28.7%. Meaning: weekend mornings brought the most eyes, but weekday evenings brought the most discussion. Pick the slot that fits your goal.

Factors That Affect a Post Timing Comparison

Posting time is one of several things that differ between two groups of posts. These factors shape how much the ranking means.

Number of Posts per Slot

One post that takes off can lift a whole slot. The tool flags any slot with fewer than 5 posts. That flag is our caution rule, not a Reddit rule.

The Community

Each community has its own audience, so results in one do not transfer to another. Run the tool once per community.

Title and Content

Titles and images differ between posts, and they change results too. Compare posts of the same type.

Removed or Filtered Posts

A post held by a filter or removed by moderators gets few views for reasons unrelated to timing. Leave those out.

When You Record the Numbers

Views and votes keep moving for a while. Record each post after the same wait, such as 48 hours.

Views vs Upvotes vs Comments: Which Ranking to Use

Views, upvotes and comments measure different goals, so the same slots can rank in a different order.

Rank byAnswersBest for
Views per postWhich slot was seen most?Awareness and announcements
Upvotes per postWhich slot earned the most approval?Reaching the top of a community
Comments per postWhich slot started the most discussion?Questions and feedback posts
Upvotes per 1,000 viewsWhich slot had the most approving viewers?Checking content fit

When to Use a Post Timing Comparison

Planning Regular Posts

Hosts of weekly threads can test two slots for a month each and keep the better one. Reddit Help notes that moderators with the right permission can schedule posts in advance.

Sharing Your Own Work

Artists and writers can check which slot brought more views before the next release. A strong title also helps, as the post title effectiveness calculator covers.

Comparing Platforms

The same method works for other networks. See the Instagram posting time ROI calculator for a version with conversion value.

Common Post Timing Mistakes

1. Trusting a Generic Best Time

Claims such as "post at 2 PM on Tuesday" have no source in Reddit documentation. The old version of this page made such claims from a fixed table, and we removed them.

2. Believing a Success Probability

No tool can know the chance that a post succeeds. The old 87% figure was a base of 70 plus invented bonus points.

3. Mixing Communities

Views in a large community and a small one are not comparable. Keep each analysis to one community.

4. Comparing Totals

A slot with more posts has more total views. Always compare per post.

5. Posting the Same Thing Repeatedly

Many communities have rules against reposts and spam. Test with new posts.

6. Misreading Lift

A lift of +38.1% is relative to your baseline. The percentage increase calculator shows the same sum.

Accuracy and Limitations

The averages are exact for the numbers you enter. A ranking of past posts cannot prove that timing caused the difference.

What it calculates accurately

  • Views, upvotes and comments per post for each slot
  • Upvotes per 1,000 views
  • Your pooled baseline across all posts entered
  • Lift and the gaps between first, second and last place

What it does not account for

  • Differences in titles, topics or post types between slots
  • Chance: there is no significance test, so a small gap is not proof
  • Live activity in a community, which Reddit does not publish by hour
  • How feeds rank or recommend any single post

How We Calculate Post Timing Results

Method
Per-post mean = total / posts for each slot. Upvotes per 1,000 views = upvotes / views x 1,000. Lift = slot average / baseline average - 1.
Baseline
All slots pooled: every total divided by all posts. It is the user baseline, not a platform benchmark.
Metric definitions
Views, upvotes and comments as listed under post insights in Reddit Help.
Caution flags
A warning shows when any slot has fewer than 5 posts. A note shows when first and second place are within 10%. Both are our own rules of thumb.
Benchmarks
None. No best time, no heatmap, no success probability. Presets are labelled examples.
Rounding
Averages to whole numbers at 1,000 or more, otherwise 1 decimal. Lift to 1 decimal.

Frequently Asked Questions About Reddit Post Timing

What is the best time to post on Reddit?

Reddit publishes no best time. The best slot differs by community, so the reliable answer comes from comparing your own posts, which this calculator does.

Does posting time affect how a post ranks?

Yes, through early activity. Reddit Help says the Hot sort prioritizes posts that have recently been getting upvotes and comments. A post made while members are active has more chances to gain early votes.

Where do I find views for my Reddit posts?

Open one of your posts and choose the option to see more insights. Reddit Help lists views, upvotes, comments, shares, reposts and awards there.

How many posts do I need per slot?

More posts give a steadier average. The tool marks any slot with fewer than 5 posts as provisional. That flag is a caution rule, not a guarantee.

Can I schedule a Reddit post for my best slot?

Moderators can. Reddit Help says moderators with the Manage Posts and Comments permission create scheduled and recurring posts for their community.

Why was the activity heatmap removed?

It was drawn from a fixed table of made-up activity levels by community size. Reddit does not publish hourly activity, so the heatmap showed no real data.

Should I rank by views or by upvotes?

Rank by views for awareness, by upvotes for approval and by comments for discussion. In the example on this page, views and comments pick different slots.

Does time zone matter?

Yes. Label slots in one time zone and keep it fixed. Members of one community live in many time zones, which is one reason no single best time exists.

Can I use this for comments instead of posts?

This page is built for posts. Reddit comment insights show upvotes, upvote ratio, replies and views. Enter those totals in the same way.

Who should not use a post timing tool?

Anyone hoping to repost the same content at several times should not use it that way. Many communities have rules against reposts, and the tool compares new posts.

Is my data stored?

No. The calculation runs in your browser and nothing is sent to our servers. Anything you choose to Save stays in this browser only.
