A Reddit crosspost is a post from one community shared into another. Reddit now calls this reposting. Its help pages use the wording "reposting, formerly known as crossposting".

Reddit Help says a repost includes a preview of the original post. The preview shows the username, the community and the upvote score of the original. Readers in the second community can find the source.

A crosspost has its own upvotes, comments and views. Those are separate from the original, which is why the two can be compared.

Crosspost impact is the extra audience and reaction the crosspost earned on top of the original. This page measures it after the fact. It does not predict a crosspost you have not made yet.

The calculator sets the crosspost numbers against the original numbers.

1. It divides crosspost views by original views to give the lift.
2. It adds views, upvotes and comments for the combined totals.
3. It divides upvotes and comments by views, for each post, and scales to 1,000 views.
4. It compares the two upvote rates to write the verdict.

With no views entered, the lift uses upvotes instead. No weights for community size, content type or posting hour are applied, because Reddit publishes none.

Example values only. An original post has 12,000 views, 480 upvotes and 60 comments. Its crosspost has 4,800 views, 300 upvotes and 45 comments.

The crosspost reached a smaller audience, but that audience upvoted more often: 62.5 per 1,000 views against 40.0. The second community was a good fit for this post.

How Relevant the Second Community Is

Reddit Help advises reposting only content that is relevant to the community. Its tips on getting noticed say relevant posts are more likely to be upvoted and seen.

Whether the Community Allows It

Not every community accepts reposts. Reddit Help says the community is greyed out in the picker when reposts are not allowed.

When You Read the Numbers

A post one hour old and a post three days old are not comparable. Read both after activity has settled.

The Size of the Numbers

Rates from small posts jump around. A post with 2,000 views and 100 upvotes shows 50 per 1,000. A second with 2,800 views and 200 upvotes shows 71.4.

The Title and Flair

Reddit lets you edit the title and add flair when you repost. A title written for the second community can change how it lands.

3. Comparing Raw Upvotes Only

A crosspost with 300 upvotes looks weaker than an original with 480. Per 1,000 views it was stronger: 62.5 against 40.0.

4. Treating Combined Views as Unique People

Views count how many times a post was viewed. One person can view both posts, so combined views are not a headcount.

5. Expecting Karma to Match Upvotes

Reddit Help says upvotes and karma do not have a 1:1 relationship. Combined upvotes are not a karma figure.

6. Reading Too Early

Views keep arriving after the first hours. Compare both posts at a similar age.
