A Reddit comment karma value calculator shows what your comments return in karma. It divides the comment karma you gained by the comments you made, then shows karma per day and per community. Karma has no cash price. Reddit pays only for gold awards, at $0.009 or $0.01 per gold by karma tier.

How to Use the Reddit Comment Karma Value Calculator
- Pick a period, such as the last 30 days. Note your comment karma at the start and at the end. Enter the difference and the number of comments you made.
- Add up to three communities with the comments you made there and the karma those comments earned.
- Enter your total account karma and any gold received to see your Contributor Program tier and the official rate.
What each result tells you:
| Result | What it means |
|---|---|
| Average karma per comment | Comment karma gained divided by comments made. |
| Karma per day | Comment karma gained divided by the days in the period. |
| Comments per day | How often you commented. |
| Best community | The community where each comment earned the most karma. |
| Contributor Program tier | The tier Reddit assigns from total karma: below 100, 100 to 4,999, or 5,000 and above. |
| Estimated award payout | Gold received times the Reddit rate for your tier. Reddit pays out from $10. |
What Is Reddit Comment Karma Worth?
Reddit comment karma is a reputation score, and it has no cash price. Reddit Help describes karma as a reflection of the upvotes and downvotes on your posts and comments. Reddit Help lists no price for karma, and the Contributor Program pays for gold, not for karma.
Karma has two real uses. Some communities require a minimum amount before a new account can post, which Reddit says is a measure against spam. Karma also sets your tier in the Contributor Program. That program pays eligible users for gold awards on their posts and comments. An account with 100 to 4,999 karma earns $0.009 per gold. An account with 5,000 or more earns $0.01 per gold.
The value of your comments is therefore what they return: karma per comment, and awards from readers. This tool measures both from your own numbers. It gives no quality score and no forecast.
How Does the Karma Calculation Work?
The calculator divides the karma you gained by the comments you made. It repeats the sum for each day and each community.
Karma per comment = Comment karma gained / Comments made. Karma per day = Comment karma gained / Days. Estimated payout = Gold received x Rate for your karma tier.- Karma per comment is the mean return of one comment in the period.
- Each community gets its own karma per comment, and the list is sorted from highest to lowest.
- Total karma picks the tier. Below 100 has no payout, 100 to 4,999 is Contributor, and 5,000 or more is Top Contributor.
- Gold received is multiplied by $0.009 or $0.01, then compared with the $10 payout minimum.
Use the karma figure from your profile. Reddit states that upvotes and karma do not have a 1:1 relationship, so counting upvotes gives a different number.
Comment Karma Example
Example values only, not benchmarks. A user gains 540 comment karma from 120 comments in 30 days. The account has 3,200 total karma and received 600 gold.
| Community | Comments | Karma | Karma per comment |
|---|---|---|---|
| r/cooking | 40 | 300 | 7.50 |
| r/hometown | 20 | 90 | 4.50 |
| r/movies | 60 | 150 | 2.50 |
| All comments | 120 | 540 | 4.50 |
The average is 4.50 karma per comment, or 18.0 karma per day from 4.0 comments per day. The cooking community returns 7.50 per comment, 1.67 times the average. The account has 3,200 karma, which is the Contributor tier. Its 600 gold is worth 600 x $0.009 = $5.40. Meaning: that is under the $10 minimum, so the balance rolls over.
Factors That Change Karma per Comment
Karma per comment moves with where, when and how you comment. These factors explain most of the change.
Community Size and Activity
A comment in a busy thread is seen by more voters than one in a quiet thread. Comment insights show the views each comment received.
Timing Within a Thread
A comment posted when a thread is new has more time to collect votes. Compare views in comment insights to check this for your own comments.
Downvotes
Karma reflects both upvotes and downvotes. A few heavily downvoted comments can turn the period negative.
How Reddit Counts Karma
Reddit calls karma an approximate reflection of votes. Your profile figure is the one that counts, not a manual tally.
Eligibility for Payouts
Reddit lists more conditions for earning: age 18 or over, a supported country and an account in good standing. Free awards and legacy awards do not count.
Karma vs Gold vs Cash: How They Compare
Karma, gold and cash are three separate things on Reddit, and only gold links to money.
| Item | What it is | Cash link |
|---|---|---|
| Karma | A reputation score from upvotes and downvotes | None. It only sets the payout tier |
| Gold | What readers spend to give paid awards | $0.009 or $0.01 per gold for eligible users |
| Below 100 karma | No contributor tier | No payout; the balance rolls over |
| 100 to 4,999 karma | Contributor | $0.009 per gold, $10 minimum |
| 5,000 karma or more | Top Contributor | $0.01 per gold, $10 minimum |
At $0.01 per gold, a $10 payout needs 1,000 gold. At $0.009 it needs 1,112 gold. For awards alone, see the Reddit award value calculator.

Common Karma Value Mistakes
1. Putting a Dollar Price on Karma
No official rate exists for karma. Sites that quote one invent it.
2. Trusting a Quality or Viral Score
The old version of this page printed a quality score and a viral probability from made-up multipliers. We removed both.
3. Counting Upvotes as Karma
Reddit says upvotes and karma do not match one to one. Read karma from your profile.
4. Mixing Post and Comment Karma
Your profile shows them apart. Use comment karma for this tool and total karma only for the tier.
5. Farming Karma
Reddit Help advises users not to set out to accumulate karma.
6. Counting Free Awards
Only awards given with gold count toward earnings. Free and legacy awards do not.
Accuracy and Limitations
The averages are exact for the numbers you enter. The payout line is an estimate that Reddit alone can confirm.
What it calculates accurately
- Karma per comment, per day and per 100 comments
- Karma per comment for each community entered
- The Contributor Program tier from total karma
- Gold times the published rate, checked against the $10 minimum
What it does not account for
- Whether your account or content is eligible to earn
- Awards that Reddit excludes, such as free or legacy awards
- Taxes, fees or changes to the program rates
- Comment quality, which no formula measures
How We Calculate Comment Karma Value
Frequently Asked Questions About Reddit Comment Karma
How much is Reddit karma worth in dollars?
Karma has no dollar price. Reddit pays eligible users for gold awards, at $0.009 or $0.01 per gold depending on the karma tier.
Can you make money from Reddit comments?
Yes, through the Contributor Program. Eligible users with at least 100 karma earn cash when readers give paid awards on their content. Reddit pays out once earnings reach $10.
What is a good karma per comment?
There is no official standard. Compare your figure with your own earlier periods and across your communities, as the table in this tool does.
Why is my comment karma lower than my upvotes?
Reddit states that karma is an approximate reflection of votes. Upvotes and karma do not have a 1:1 relationship, and downvotes reduce karma.
How much karma do I need to be a Top Contributor?
You need 5,000 or more total karma. Reddit Help lists 100 to 4,999 karma as the Contributor tier and 5,000 or more as the Top Contributor tier.
How much gold equals a $10 payout?
A Top Contributor needs 1,000 gold, since 1,000 x $0.01 = $10. A Contributor needs 1,112 gold, since 1,112 x $0.009 = $10.01.
Who should not use this calculator?
Anyone looking for a resale price for an account should not use it. The tool gives no such price, and it only describes your own activity.
Do downvoted comments lower the result?
Yes. Karma reflects upvotes and downvotes. A period with heavy downvotes shows a negative karma per comment and a red verdict.
Why did the old karma value and quality score change?
The old figures came from invented multipliers for community size, comment type, length and age. No source supported them, so the page now shows measured averages only.
Does comment karma help new accounts post?
It does in some communities. Reddit Help says some communities require a certain amount of karma before you can post, to prevent spam.
Is my data stored?
No. The calculation runs in your browser and nothing is sent to our servers. Anything you choose to Save stays in this browser only.
