How to Use the Instagram Posting Time ROI Calculator

  1. Sort your recent posts into two to four time slots, such as morning, midday and evening. Use your own time zone and name each slot.
  2. For each slot, enter the number of posts. Add the totals for reach, interactions and conversions from your insights and sales records.
  3. Enter what one conversion is worth, and your cost per post if you want the return. Then read the ranked table.

What each result tells you:

ResultWhat it means
Top time slotThe slot with the highest average on the metric you rank by.
Lift vs your baselineHow far the top slot sits above the average of all your posts.
Your baselineThe average across every post you entered. It is your own figure, not an industry one.
Lead over next bestThe gap between first and second place.
Return on cost per post(Value per post - cost per post) / cost per post for the top slot.
Smallest sampleThe slot with the fewest posts, the weakest part of the comparison.

What Is Instagram Posting Time ROI?

Instagram posting time ROI is the return you earn per post in one time slot compared with your other slots. It is worked out from your own posts, because Instagram publishes no universal best time to post.

What Instagram does offer is account-level data. Its Help Center says insights cover any period within the past 90 days. Accounts with at least 100 followers can see the times their followers are most active. Meta Business Suite also has an Active times option when you schedule a post. Meta describes it as recommended times based on when your followers were most active over the past seven days.

Those features describe when your audience is online. This calculator answers the next question: which slot actually returned more reach, interactions and sales for you. It is not a forecast and it does not schedule posts.

How Does the Time Slot Comparison Work?

The calculator turns each slot into per-post averages and puts a money value on conversions. It then compares every slot with your pooled baseline.

Formula: Value per post = (Conversions / Posts) x Value per conversion. Lift = Slot average / Baseline average - 1. Return = (Value per post - Cost per post) / Cost per post.
  1. Reach, interactions and conversions are each divided by the posts in that slot.
  2. Conversions per post are multiplied by your value per conversion.
  3. The baseline pools every slot: all conversions divided by all posts, times the same value.
  4. Slots are sorted on the metric you chose, and lift is shown for each one.

Reach here means viewers, which Instagram defines as the unique accounts that saw your content at least once. Interactions are likes, comments, saves and shares.

Posting Time ROI Example

Example values only, not benchmarks. A small shop reviews 38 posts from the last 90 days. One sale is worth $40 and a post costs $60 to make.

SlotPostsReach per postInteractions per postConversions per postValue per post
Evening 6 to 9123,100217.04.5$180.00
Midday 12 to 3102,600143.03.1$124.00
Morning 6 to 9102,100126.02.1$84.00
Late 9 to 1262,100105.01.5$60.00
Baseline (all 38 posts)382,547155.93.0$121.05

Evening posts earned $180.00 each, a lift of +48.7% over the $121.05 baseline. The return on a $60 post is (180 - 60) / 60 = 200.0%. Meaning: for this shop, evening posts paid back three times their cost, while late posts only broke even.

Factors That Affect a Posting Time Comparison

Time of day is one of several things that differ between two groups of posts. These factors shape how far you can trust the ranking.

Number of Posts per Slot

A slot with 3 posts can be decided by one strong post. The tool flags any slot with fewer than 5 posts. That flag is our caution rule, not an Instagram rule.

Content Type

Reels, carousels and photos reach people in different ways. Compare the same format across slots, or run the tool once per format.

Conversion Tracking

The value per post is only as good as your tracking. Use link tags, discount codes or shop reports that tie a sale to a post.

Audience Time Zones

Followers in several countries blur a slot. Label slots in your own time zone and check where your viewers are in insights.

Day of the Week and Season

A Saturday evening is not a Tuesday evening. Split by weekday and weekend when you have enough posts.

Your Own Slots vs Published Best Times

A comparison of your own slots uses your audience, while a published best-time chart averages many unrelated accounts.

When to Use a Posting Time Comparison

Planning a Content Calendar

Review the last 90 days once a quarter. Move more posts into the slot that leads, then check again.

Justifying Time Spent

Add your cost per post to see the return for each slot. A wider view of spend and revenue is in the ROI calculator.

Testing a New Slot

Post in a new slot for a month, then compare it with your usual one. Check the sale side of the result with the conversion rate calculator.

Common Posting Time Mistakes

1. Copying a Generic Best Time

Charts that say "post at 9 AM on Tuesday" describe other accounts. Instagram itself publishes no such time.

2. Entering an Assumed Lift

The old version of this page asked you to pick an uplift, then multiplied revenue by it. A guess in gives a guess out, so we removed it.

3. Comparing Totals

A slot with more posts has more total reach. Always compare per post.

4. Judging Too Early

Reach keeps growing for days. Record every post after the same waiting period, such as 7 days.

5. Mixing Boosted and Organic Posts

Paid reach hides the effect of timing. Leave boosted posts out.

6. Reading Lift as Points

A lift of +48.7% is relative to the baseline. The percentage increase calculator shows the sum.

Accuracy and Limitations

The averages, value and return are exact for the numbers entered. They describe the past and cannot prove that timing caused the gap.

What it calculates accurately

  • Reach, interactions and conversions per post for each slot
  • Value per post from your own value per conversion
  • Lift against your pooled baseline
  • Return on your cost per post

What it does not account for

  • Differences in content, format or topic between slots
  • Chance: there is no significance test, so a small gap is not proof
  • Sales with no traceable link to a post
  • Future results, ranking systems or any change to how reach is counted

How We Calculate Posting Time ROI

Method
Per-post mean = total / posts for each slot. Value per post = conversions per post x value per conversion. Return = (value per post - cost per post) / cost per post.
Baseline
All slots pooled: every total divided by all posts. It is the user baseline, not an industry benchmark.
Metric definitions
Viewers and interactions as defined in the Instagram Help Center.
Caution flags
A warning shows when any slot has fewer than 5 posts. A note shows when first and second place are within 10%. Both are our own rules of thumb.
Benchmarks
None. No best time, no assumed uplift and no forecast. Presets are labelled examples.
Currency
The currency switch changes the symbol only. It does not convert amounts.
Rounding
Averages to whole numbers at 1,000 or more, otherwise 1 decimal. Money to 2 decimals. Lift and return to 1 decimal.

Frequently Asked Questions About Instagram Posting Times

What is the best time to post on Instagram?

Instagram publishes no universal best time. The best time for your account is the slot where your own posts return the most. This calculator ranks those slots from your data.

Where do I find when my followers are most active?

Open insights and look under total followers. Instagram Help says this view, including the times followers are most active, needs at least 100 followers.

What does Active times mean in Meta Business Suite?

It is a scheduling option. Meta describes it as recommended times based on follower activity on Facebook and Instagram over the past seven days.

How far back can I pull the numbers?

Instagram insights cover any period within the past 90 days. Export or note your figures each quarter if you want a longer record.

How do I count conversions from a post?

Use a method that links a sale to a post, such as tagged links, a discount code or shop reports. Enter only conversions you can trace.

How many posts do I need in each slot?

More posts give a steadier average. The tool marks any slot with fewer than 5 posts as provisional. That flag is a caution rule, not a guarantee.

What is a good return per post?

There is no official figure. A return above 0% means the slot earned more than it cost. Compare each slot with your own baseline.

Why was the 12-month forecast removed?

It multiplied your revenue by an uplift you guessed and by invented scenario factors. No official source supports those numbers, so the page now reports only measured results.

Does it work for Reels and Stories?

Yes. Run it once per format so that you compare like with like, since formats reach people in different ways.

Is this calculator useful for small accounts?

Yes, once each slot has 5 or more posts. Small accounts gain the most from their own data, because follower activity times need at least 100 followers.

Is my data stored?

No. The calculation runs in your browser and nothing is sent to our servers. Anything you choose to Save stays in this browser only.
