Grams to Pounds Converter
To convert grams to pounds, divide the grams by 453.59237, the exact number of grams in one avoirdupois pound. So 500 g is 1.1023 lb, or 1 lb 1.64 oz, and 1,000 g is 2.2046 lb. For pounds and ounces, multiply the decimal part of the pounds by 16.

How to Use the Grams to Pounds Converter
- Keep the direction on Grams to pounds, or choose pounds and ounces to grams to go back.
- Type the grams from a scale, recipe or label. For the reverse, type the pounds and any extra ounces.
- Read the pounds as a decimal and as pounds and ounces. The cards add total ounces and a mental shortcut with its error.
| Result | What it means |
|---|---|
| Result | Decimal pounds to 4 places, or grams to 2 places in reverse. |
| Pounds and ounces | The form US scales and labels use, such as 1 lb 1.64 oz. |
| Exact factor | How many pounds are in 1 g. It repeats forever, so it is shown rounded. |
| Reverse direction | 1 lb = 453.59237 g, which is exact by definition. |
| Total ounces | The whole mass in avoirdupois ounces, 16 to the pound. |
| Mental-math shortcut | Dividing by 454, and how far that answer is from the exact one. |
What Is the Relationship Between Grams and Pounds?
One pound is exactly 453.59237 grams. The gram is a metric unit of mass. The pound is a US customary and British imperial unit, and it is defined in terms of the kilogram: 1 lb = 0.45359237 kg.
The pound used for food, body weight and parcels is the avoirdupois pound. It holds 16 ounces and 7,000 grains. NIST Handbook 44 notes that a pound or ounce with no other label is understood to be avoirdupois.
A second pound exists. The troy pound, used for precious metals, is 373.2417216 g and holds only 12 troy ounces. It is about 82 percent of an avoirdupois pound, so never use this page for gold or silver prices.
UK law uses the same pound. The Weights and Measures Act 1985 sets it at 0.45359237 kg, with the ounce as one sixteenth of a pound and the stone as 14 pounds.
How Does Grams to Pounds Conversion Work?
Divide grams by 453.59237 to get pounds, then turn the decimal part into ounces.
lb = g / 453.59237 | oz = (lb - whole lb) x 16 | reverse: g = lb x 453.59237- Divide: 750 g / 453.59237 = 1.65347 lb.
- Keep the whole pounds: 1 lb.
- Multiply what is left by 16: 0.65347 x 16 = 10.46 oz. The answer is 1 lb 10.46 oz.
Dividing by 453.59237 is the same as multiplying by 0.00220462262. That second number never ends, which is why the tool shows it as rounded and keeps the full precision inside.
| Shortcut | 500 g gives | Error |
|---|---|---|
| Exact: g / 453.59237 | 1.1023 lb | None |
| g / 454 | 1.1013 lb | 0.09% low |
| g x 0.0022 | 1.1000 lb | 0.21% low |
| g / 500 (rough) | 1.0000 lb | 9.3% low |
Grams to Pounds Examples
Meat from a metric recipe. A recipe calls for 750 g of beef. 750 / 453.59237 = 1.6535 lb, which a US butcher would weigh as about 1 lb 10.5 oz.
A 1 kg bag. 1,000 g is 2.2046 lb, or 2 lb 3.27 oz. That is why a 1 kg bag of sugar is a little heavier than a 2 lb bag.
Butter. 250 g is 0.5512 lb, or 8.82 oz. A US half-pound of butter is 8 oz, which is 226.8 g, so the metric block is about 23 g larger.
Reverse, a US label. A pack says 1 lb 8 oz. That is 1.5 lb x 453.59237 = 680.39 g. For body weight in the UK form, see pounds to stone.
Factors That Change Your Result
The factor is fixed, so only the kind of pound, the precision you keep and the way you write ounces can change the answer.
Avoirdupois vs Troy Pound
A troy pound is 373.24 g, not 453.59 g. Using the wrong one on 1,000 g gives 2.68 lb instead of 2.20 lb, about 22 percent too high.
Decimal Pounds vs Ounces
1.5 lb is 1 lb 8 oz, not 1 lb 5 oz. The decimal part is a fraction of a pound, so it must be multiplied by 16 before it reads as ounces.
Scale Resolution
Many kitchen scales read to 1 g or to 0.1 oz. A reading of 0.1 oz is about 2.8 g, so a result in ounces to 2 decimals claims more precision than that scale gives.
Rounding the Factor
Dividing by 454 is only 0.09 percent low, but multiplying by 0.002 is 9.3 percent low. The shortcut card shows the error for your exact amount.
Grams vs Pounds vs Ounces Compared
Grams are the small metric step, ounces the small US step, and the pound groups 16 ounces.
| Unit | In grams | Where you see it |
|---|---|---|
| Gram (g) | 1 g | Metric labels, recipes outside the US, lab work |
| Ounce, avoirdupois (oz) | 28.349523125 g | US food packs, postage, portion sizes |
| Pound, avoirdupois (lb) | 453.59237 g | US groceries, meat, produce, body weight |
| Troy ounce (oz t) | 31.1034768 g | Gold, silver and platinum prices |
| Troy pound (lb t) | 373.2417216 g | Precious metals, rarely used today |
| Kilogram (kg) | 1,000 g | Metric bulk food and body mass |
Fluid ounces are a different thing: they measure volume, not mass. For cup and spoon conversions, the cooking measurement conversions guide explains when grams and fluid ounces line up.
When to Use a Grams to Pounds Converter
US Cooking from Metric Recipes
European and Asian recipes list meat, flour and butter in grams, while US stores sell by the pound. Convert to pounds and ounces to know what to ask for at the counter.
Buying by the Pound
Deli, produce and bulk bins price per pound. Knowing that 227 g is about half a pound helps you match a metric recipe to what you buy.
Packages and Fitness
Couriers in the US use pounds and ounces, while many product specs use grams. For a broader set of units, the metric to imperial converter covers length, volume and temperature too.

Common Grams to Pounds Mistakes
1. Reading 1.5 Lb as 1 Lb 5 Oz
A pound has 16 ounces, not 10. The 0.5 is half a pound, which is 8 oz.
2. Dividing by 1,000
Dividing grams by 1,000 gives kilograms, not pounds. 500 g is 0.5 kg but 1.1023 lb.
3. Using the Troy Pound for Food
Troy units are only for precious metals. Food and body weight always use the avoirdupois pound.
4. Confusing Ounces and Fluid Ounces
An ounce of mass is 28.35 g. A US fluid ounce is 29.57 mL of volume. They match only roughly, and only for water-like liquids.
5. Rounding to 454 for Large Amounts
At 10,000 g the 454 shortcut gives 22.026 lb against a true 22.046 lb. The gap of 0.02 lb is small, but it grows with the amount.
Accuracy and Limitations
The conversion uses the exact legal definition of the pound, so the result is as precise as the number you enter.
What it calculates accurately
- Grams to decimal pounds and to pounds and ounces
- Pounds plus ounces back to grams
- Total avoirdupois ounces for the same mass
- The error of the divide-by-454 shortcut for your amount
What it does not account for
- Troy or apothecaries pounds and ounces
- Grams to cups or fluid ounces, which needs a density
- The accuracy of your scale or of a pack label
- Rounding rules used by stores, couriers or labs
