Pounds to Ounces Converter

Quick answer

To convert pounds to ounces, multiply the pounds by 16. One avoirdupois pound is exactly 16 ounces, so 2 lb is 32 oz, 2.5 lb is 40 oz and 7.5 lb is 120 oz. To go back, divide ounces by 16. This is the everyday pound used for food, body weight and parcels.

How to Use the Pounds to Ounces Converter

  1. Leave the direction on Pounds to ounces, or switch it to ounces to pounds.
  2. Type the weight. Decimals work, so 1.3 lb or 0.2 lb is fine.
  3. Read the ounces at once. The tool also splits the weight into pounds and ounces, shows grams and gives the fraction of a pound.

Here is what each result means:

ResultWhat it means
Converted weightYour weight in the target unit, shown to up to 6 decimal places.
Exact factorThe fixed link: 1 lb = 16 oz, or 1 oz = 0.0625 lb.
Reverse directionThe same weight read the other way, for checking your answer.
Pounds and ouncesThe form a kitchen or baby scale shows, such as 1 lb 4.8 oz.
Metric equivalentThe same mass in grams, and kilograms above 1,000 g.

Verdict bandA short note on rounding, part ounces, or the troy ounce trap.

What Is a Pound to Ounce Conversion?

A pound to ounce conversion expresses a weight given in pounds (lb) as the same weight in ounces (oz). Both units belong to the avoirdupois system. It is the everyday system of mass in the United States and the UK imperial system.

NIST Handbook 44 sets the ladder: 16 drams make 1 ounce, and 16 ounces make 1 pound, which is 7,000 grains. The UK Weights and Measures Act 1985 gives the same rule: the ounce is 1/16 of the pound. Since 1959 the pound has been fixed to the kilogram as exactly 0.45359237 kg.

This page serves shoppers, cooks, new parents and anyone shipping a parcel. It does not cover fluid ounces, which measure volume, or troy ounces, which weigh precious metals. Both are explained further down.

How Does the Pounds to Ounces Conversion Work?

You multiply the pounds by 16, because one pound is defined as exactly 16 ounces.

Formula: ounces = pounds x 16 | Reverse: pounds = ounces / 16
  1. Take the weight in pounds, for example 1.3 lb.
  2. Multiply by 16: 1.3 x 16 = 20.8 oz.
  3. For a scale-style reading, split off whole pounds: 20.8 - 16 = 4.8, so 1.3 lb is 1 lb 4.8 oz.

The factor 16 is exact, so the answer carries no conversion error. Any rounding comes only from the decimals you keep.

Pounds to Ounces Examples

Birth weight. A baby weighs 7.5 lb. 7.5 x 16 = 120 oz. On a scale that reads 7 lb 8 oz, and in metric it is 3.402 kg.

Deli counter. A slicer shows 0.2 lb of ham. 0.2 x 16 = 3.2 oz, a little over 3 ounces. It is not 2 ounces, as the decimal might suggest.

Meat package. A tray is labelled 2.75 lb. 2.75 x 16 = 44 oz. A recipe that needs 12 oz per batch gets 3 full batches, with 8 oz left over.

Ounces back to pounds. A large jar holds 40 oz. 40 / 16 = 2.5 lb, or 2 lb 8 oz. For recipes in grams, the grams to ounces converter handles the metric side.

Ounces as Decimal Pounds

Scales and price labels often show decimal pounds. This table turns common whole ounces into both forms.

4 oz0.25 lb1/4 lb

Factors That Change Your Result

The factor never changes, so only the ounce type, the decimals and the scale reading can shift your answer.

Which Ounce You Mean

The avoirdupois ounce is 28.349523125 g. The troy ounce is 480 grains, or 31.1034768 g, about 9.7 percent heavier. NIST Handbook 44 lists 12 troy ounces to the troy pound, not 16.

Decimal Pounds vs Pounds and Ounces

1.5 lb means one and a half pounds, which is 1 lb 8 oz. It never means 1 lb 5 oz. The tool shows both forms side by side to stop this mix-up.

Rounding and Scale Resolution

The tool keeps up to 6 decimals. A home scale may show 0.1 oz or 1 g steps. Round the final answer to what your scale can show, never the factor.

Weight vs Volume

A fluid ounce measures space, not mass. A US pint holds 16 fluid ounces, or 473.18 mL. With water at about 1 g per mL, that pint weighs near 1.04 lb, not exactly 1 lb.

Avoirdupois vs Troy Ounces Compared

Food, people and parcels use avoirdupois ounces. Gold, silver and platinum are sold by troy weight or in grams, under the NIST Handbook 130 rule for precious metals.

So a troy ounce is heavier than an everyday ounce, yet a troy pound is lighter than an everyday pound. The troy pound is 0.823 of the avoirdupois pound. This tool always uses avoirdupois units.

When to Use a Pounds to Ounces Converter

Cooking and Portioning

Meat and cheese are priced by the pound, but recipes often ask for ounces. 1.25 lb of ground beef is 20 oz, enough for five 4 oz patties. For cups and spoons, see the cooking measurement conversions guide.

Baby Weight and Growth

US birth weights are given in pounds and ounces. Converting to total ounces makes gains easy to compare: 7 lb 8 oz is 120 oz, and 8 lb 2 oz is 130 oz, a 10 oz gain.

Shipping and Postage

Small parcels and letters are often priced by the ounce. A 1.4 lb package is 22.4 oz, which rounds up to 23 oz on a per-ounce rate. Check your carrier for its own rounding rule.

Baking by Weight

Bakers scale recipes by weight for accuracy. The baking conversion calculator helps move between weight and volume for common ingredients.

Mental Math Shortcuts for Pounds to Ounces

Multiplying by 16 has exact shortcuts, and the gram shortcuts carry a small, known error.

  • Double four times. 3 lb: 6, 12, 24, 48 oz. Exact.
  • Times 10 plus times 6. 2.5 lb: 25 + 15 = 40 oz. Exact.
  • Quarter pounds. Each 0.25 lb is 4 oz, so 1.75 lb is 7 x 4 = 28 oz. Exact.
  • 454 g per pound. About 0.09 percent high. Fine for any kitchen.
  • 28 g per ounce. About 1.2 percent low. Using 30 g is about 5.8 percent high.

For pounds to kilograms, the kg to lbs converter works the metric pair both ways.

Common Pounds to Ounces Mistakes

1. Reading Decimal Pounds as Ounces

0.2 lb is 3.2 oz, not 2 oz. 1.5 lb is 1 lb 8 oz, not 1 lb 5 oz. The digits after the point are tenths of a pound.

2. Multiplying by 12 or 10

Twelve belongs to inches in a foot and to troy ounces in a troy pound. The everyday pound always has 16 ounces.

3. Using a Fluid Ounce as a Weight

A recipe that says 8 fl oz of honey means a volume. Honey is denser than water, so 8 fl oz of it weighs well over 8 oz.

4. Pricing Gold with Everyday Ounces

A troy ounce is 31.10 g, but an everyday ounce is 28.35 g. Mixing them understates metal weight by about 9 percent.

5. Rounding in the Middle

Round 1.33 lb to 1.3 before multiplying and you lose about 0.5 oz. Convert first, then round the ounces.

Accuracy and Limitations

The conversion is exact, because the 16 ounce pound is a legal definition in both the US and the UK.

What it calculates accurately

  • Pounds to ounces and ounces to pounds, avoirdupois
  • Pounds-and-ounces readouts, with carrying at 16 oz
  • Grams and kilograms from the exact 0.45359237 kg pound
  • Fractions of a pound for whole ounces

What it does not account for

  • Troy or apothecaries ounces used for metals and old pharmacy work
  • Fluid ounces, which need an ingredient density
  • Scale error, tare or packaging weight
  • Carrier or label rounding rules

Frequently Asked Questions About Pounds and Ounces

How many ounces are in half a pound?

Half a pound is 8 ounces. A quarter pound is 4 ounces and three quarters of a pound is 12 ounces.

Is 1.5 pounds the same as 1 pound 5 ounces?

No. 1.5 pounds is 1 pound 8 ounces, because 0.5 lb x 16 = 8 oz. Decimal pounds count tenths of a pound, not ounces.

How many ounces is 0.1 pound?

One tenth of a pound is 1.6 ounces. So each 0.1 lb step on a deli scale adds 1.6 oz.

Why are there 16 ounces in a pound and not 10?

The avoirdupois system is older than the metric system, and 16 splits evenly into halves, quarters, eighths and sixteenths. NIST Handbook 44 and UK law both keep 16 ounces to the pound today.

Are US and UK pounds and ounces the same?

Yes. NIST notes that the British avoirdupois pound matches the US one, at 0.45359237 kg. Only liquid measures such as pints and fluid ounces differ.

How many troy ounces are in a pound?

One everyday pound equals 14.583 troy ounces. That comes from 7,000 grains divided by 480 grains per troy ounce.

Is a fluid ounce the same as an ounce of weight?

No. A fluid ounce is a volume. Eight fluid ounces of water weigh about 8.3 oz, and denser liquids such as syrup weigh more.

How many ounces are in a kilogram?

One kilogram is 35.274 avoirdupois ounces. That is 2.2046 lb x 16.

How do I write 22 ounces in pounds?

Divide by 16: 22 oz is 1.375 lb, or 1 lb 6 oz. As a fraction it is 1 3/8 lb.

How many ounces are in a stone?

One stone is 224 ounces. A stone is 14 pounds under UK law, and 14 x 16 = 224.
