Wizard101 Critical Calculator (Crit Chance and Crit Damage vs Block)

Quick answer

Wizard101 critical chance in PvE is 3 x level factor x critical rating divided by (3 x critical rating plus the enemy block rating). A critical that lands multiplies damage by 2 minus 3 x block divided by (critical plus 3 x block). With 630 critical against 90 block at level 100, the first roll is 95.5 percent and the multiplier is x1.70.

How to Use the Wizard101 Critical Calculator

  1. Enter your critical rating from your stats page and the enemy block rating.
  2. Enter your wizard level. Levels above 100 use the same level factor as level 100.
  3. Optionally enter a target chance or target multiplier to see the rating you still need.

Here is what each result means:

ResultWhat it means
Critical chance (first roll)The odds that your attack rolls a critical before the enemy tries to block.
Block chance (second roll)The odds that the enemy blocks a critical you rolled. It is 100% minus the first roll.
Critical lands, not blockedThe odds a hit ends as a real critical. It is the first roll times the chance of no block.
Critical damage multiplierHow much a landed critical multiplies the hit. It never goes above x2.
Average multiplier per hitThe blend of criticals and normal hits over many casts.
Rating for targetThe critical rating you need to reach your chance or multiplier goal against this block.

What Is Critical Rating in Wizard101?

Critical rating is a stat on your gear that raises the odds of a critical hit. A critical hit makes a spell hit harder than normal.

Before the Fall 2020 update, the stat was a plain percent. Now it is a rating that the game compares with the enemy block rating. Block rating is the defender stat that fights critical hits.

KingsIsle lead designer Ratbeard described the change in an October 2020 dev diary. He said both stats start from a base chance set by level. The game then runs both stats through a limit function that compares the attacker critical with the defender block.

This page covers PvE only. Ravenwood Academy notes that critical works differently in PvP, and the PvP formulas are not on this page.

How Does Critical Chance Work in Wizard101?

The game runs two rolls. The first roll tests your critical chance. If it succeeds, a second roll tests the enemy block chance.

Formula: Critical chance = 3 x l x c / (3 x c + b)
Block chance = 1 - critical chance
Critical multiplier = 2 - 3 x b / (c + 3 x b)
Here c is your critical rating, b is the enemy block rating and l is your level divided by 100, never above 1.
  1. Find the level factor: level 100 or higher gives l = 1.
  2. Compute the first roll: 3 x l x c divided by (3 x c + b).
  3. The block chance is what is left: 100% minus the first roll.
  4. A critical lands only if the first roll succeeds and the block roll fails. That chance is the first roll times itself.
  5. If the critical lands, multiply the hit by 2 minus 3 x b divided by (c + 3 x b).

The developers gave three checks. Equal critical and block gives a 75% first roll and 25% block. Double critical gives 86% and 14% with a x1.40 multiplier. Double block gives 60% and 40% with a x1.14 multiplier. This calculator reproduces all three.

Wizard101 Critical Calculator Example

Take a level 100 wizard with 630 critical rating who fights an enemy with 90 block.

Calculation: first roll = 3 x 1 x 630 / (3 x 630 + 90) = 1890 / 1980 = 95.5%. Block chance = 4.5%. A critical lands on 95.5% x 95.5% = 91.1% of hits. The multiplier is 2 - 270 / (630 + 270) = 2 - 0.30 = x1.70.

Averaged over many casts, the blend is 1 + 0.911 x (1.70 - 1) = x1.64 per hit. So this wizard gets about 64 percent extra damage per hit from criticals, not a full double.

The same wizard at level 50 has l = 0.5. The first roll falls to 47.7%, because the level factor caps the chance at 50 percent.

Factors That Change Your Critical Odds

Four inputs move the result, and block rating matters as much as critical rating.

Enemy Block Rating

Each extra point of block lowers both the chance and the multiplier. Ravenwood Academy lists about 90 block for Karamelle mobs and up to 240 for bosses, so one rating can feel very different from fight to fight.

Your Critical Rating

Rating has diminishing returns. Against 90 block, going from 200 to 400 adds 6 points of chance, and going from 800 to 1000 adds less than 1 point.

Wizard Level

The level factor l is level divided by 100 and stops at 1. Below level 100 it caps the first roll at l, so a level 50 wizard cannot pass 50 percent on the first roll.

Buffs and Spells

Ravenwood Academy says Vengeance adds 20 percent to the critical chance for four rounds and Conviction adds 20 percent to the block chance. This calculator does not add those bonuses, so treat them as extra on top.

Critical Rating vs Block Rating: Quick Comparison

The first table shows chance and multiplier at level 100 for five ratings against two block values. The block values are examples taken from Ravenwood Academy, which lists them for Karamelle enemies.

When to Use a Critical Calculator

Choosing Gear

Compare two gear sets by entering the total critical rating of each against the block of the enemy you fight most.

Setting a Rating Goal

Enter a target chance to see the rating you need. Ravenwood Academy suggests about 570 critical for a 95 percent first roll against 90 block, and this tool shows the same figure.

Weighing Critical Against Damage

Compare the average multiplier per hit with the gain from more damage. A damage stat gives a flat boost every hit, while critical gives a boost on only some hits. The average multiplier works like an expected value.

Checking a Pet Talent Plan

Critical talents raise your rating, so run the new total through the tool. Browse the Wizard101 calculators to plan the talents first.

Common Wizard101 Critical Mistakes

1. Using the Old Rating Divided by 5 Rule

That rule belongs to the pre-2020 percent system. The current formulas compare critical with block, so a fixed divisor gives the wrong answer.

2. Ignoring the Block Roll

The first roll is not the end. A critical that rolls can still be blocked, so the real chance is the first roll times the chance of no block.

3. Expecting a Double Hit

A landed critical is x2 only when block is 0. Against 90 block with 630 critical it is x1.70, and against 240 block it is x1.47.

4. Using PvE Numbers in PvP

The developers have said PvP uses different critical rules. Do not use this page for duels.

5. Mixing Up Rating and Percent

The stats page may show a rating or a percent depending on the screen. Enter the rating here, never the percent.

Accuracy and Limitations

The math is exact for the published formulas, but the formulas are community-documented and from late 2020.

What it calculates accurately

  • The first roll, block roll and landed-critical odds for the formulas as published
  • The critical multiplier for any critical and block pair
  • The rating needed for a chance or multiplier goal

What it does not account for

  • PvP, which uses different critical rules
  • Changes the developers made after December 2020
  • Vengeance, Conviction and other temporary bonuses
  • Damage variance, rounding inside the game, or how your damage stat scales

If your in-game critical chance differs from this page, change the formula constant under the inputs and compare. Report a mismatch with the contact link below.

How We Calculate Critical Chance

Method
Chance = 3 x l x c / (3 x c + b). Block = 1 - chance. Multiplier = 2 - 3 x b / (c + 3 x b). Lands = chance x (1 - block).
Inputs used
Critical rating, enemy block rating, wizard level, an optional target chance or multiplier, and the formula constant.
Assumptions
PvE only. The level factor is level / 100, capped at 1. Block chance equals 100% minus the first roll. A non-critical or blocked hit counts as x1.
Rounding
Percentages to one decimal. Multipliers to two decimals. Ratings needed round up to a whole point.
Edge cases
Zero block gives a x2 multiplier. Zero critical gives a 0% chance. Targets the level cannot reach show Not reachable.

Wizard101 Critical Rating FAQ

How do I calculate critical chance in Wizard101?

Use 3 x level factor x critical rating divided by (3 x critical rating plus enemy block). For a level 100 wizard with 630 critical against 90 block, that gives 95.5 percent. Enter your numbers above for yours.

How much critical rating do I need for 95 percent?

Against 90 block you need about 570 at level 100 or higher. Against 240 block you need about 1,520. Enter a target chance in the tool for any other block value.

What is the maximum critical damage multiplier?

The maximum is x2, and you only reach it against an enemy with 0 block. KingsIsle stated that a defender with 0 block takes the full x2 on a landed critical.

Why is my critical multiplier below x2?

Block rating lowers it. The multiplier is 2 minus 3 x block divided by (critical plus 3 x block), so more block always means a smaller multiplier even when the critical lands.

Does critical rating change my damage directly?

No. Critical rating changes only the chance and size of the critical bonus. Your damage stat is a separate boost that applies to every hit.

Does wizard level change critical chance?

Yes, below level 100. The level factor is level divided by 100, so a level 50 wizard has a ceiling of 50 percent on the first roll. At level 100 or higher the factor is 1.

Is this the same in PvP?

No. Ravenwood Academy notes that PvP critical is calculated differently, and this page covers PvE only. Do not use it to plan duel builds.

What block rating do bosses have?

It varies by boss and world. Ravenwood Academy listed about 90 block for Karamelle mobs and at most 240 for Karamelle bosses in December 2020. Check the enemy you fight, because the tool needs the real value.

Why does my in-game critical chance look different?

The developers can retune the formulas, and temporary bonuses such as Vengeance add on top. The formulas here date from December 2020, so compare with your in-game value and adjust the constant if needed.

Do critical heals use the same formula?

Ravenwood Academy says critical heals use the same chance formula against the block of the person healed, and a critical heal cannot be blocked. This calculator is built for damage.
