How to Use the Meters to Miles Converter
- Keep the direction on Meters to miles, or switch to miles to meters for the reverse.
- Type the distance in meters. Track events such as 400, 1500, 5000 and 10000 are recognised and named.
- Add a finish time in minutes and seconds to see your pace per mile and per kilometer. Leave it blank for a plain conversion.
Here is what each result means:
| Result | What it means |
|---|---|
| Distance in miles | Your meters in international miles, to 7 significant figures. |
| Exact factor | 1 mi = 1,609.344 m exactly. The reverse, 0.000621371192 mi per meter, is rounded. |
| Reverse direction | The same distance read the other way, as a check. |
| 400 m track laps | How many laps of a standard outdoor track the distance covers, measured in lane 1. |
| Compared with one mile | How far the distance falls short of a mile, or whole miles plus leftover meters. |
| Mental-math check | The divide-by-1,600 shortcut and its known error. |
| Pace per mile and per km | Average time per mile and per kilometer from your finish time. |
What Is a Meter to Mile Conversion?
A meter to mile conversion restates a length in meters as a fraction or multiple of the international mile. The meter is the base length unit of the International System of Units (SI). The BIPM defines it through the speed of light: one meter is the distance light travels in 1/299,792,458 of a second.
The mile is 1,760 yards, and the yard has been exactly 0.9144 m since 1959. That fixes the mile at 1,609.344 m. NIST SP 811 lists this value, and UK statute, in Schedule 1 of the 1985 Weights and Measures Act, sets the mile at 1,760 yards. One meter is therefore about 0.00062 miles, a very small slice.
Meters are the working unit of athletics tracks, swimming pools and engineering drawings. Miles are the everyday distance unit in the United States and on UK roads. This page bridges those two worlds, with a focus on track and race distances. For whole kilometers, the metric to imperial converter also covers weight, volume and temperature.
How Does the Meters to Miles Formula Work?
You divide the meters by 1,609.344, because that many meters make one international mile.
miles = meters / 1,609.344 | Reverse: meters = miles x 1,609.344- Start from the definition: 1 mi = 5,280 ft x 0.3048 m = 1,609.344 m.
- Divide your meters by 1,609.344. For 5,000 m: 5,000 / 1,609.344 = 3.1068560 mi.
- Round only at the end. The per-meter factor, 0.000621371192..., never terminates, so dividing by 1,609.344 keeps full accuracy.
The reverse is a clean multiplication. Half a mile is 0.5 x 1,609.344 = 804.672 m, and a quarter mile is 402.336 m. Both numbers are exact, with no rounding at all.
Track Distance Examples: Meters to Miles
The World Athletics Technical Rules set the nominal length of a standard track at 400 m. The lap is measured 0.30 m out from the inside kerb in lane 1. Every common track race is a multiple or fraction of that lap.
| Event | Miles | On a 400 m track |
|---|---|---|
| 100 m | 0.062137 mi | A quarter lap |
| 200 m | 0.124274 mi | Half a lap |
| 400 m | 0.248548 mi | One lap in lane 1 |
| 800 m | 0.497097 mi | Two laps |
| 1500 m | 0.932057 mi | 3.75 laps |
| 1600 m | 0.994194 mi | Four laps |
| 3000 m | 1.864114 mi | 7.5 laps |
| 3200 m | 1.988388 mi | Eight laps |
| 5000 m | 3.106856 mi | 12.5 laps |
| 10,000 m | 6.213712 mi | 25 laps |
Worked example. A runner finishes a 5000 m race in 25:00. First, 5,000 / 1,609.344 = 3.10686 mi. Next, 1,500 seconds / 3.10686 mi = 482.8 s, which is 8:02.8 per mile. The same time is 5:00.0 per kilometer. For goal splits and race predictions, use the pace calculator.
A single lap. 400 m is 0.248548 mi. A true quarter mile is 402.336 m, so one lap is 2.336 m short of it. That gap is why four laps never make a full mile.
The Metric Mile: 1500 M vs 1600 M vs the Mile
Runners call the 1500 m the metric mile, but it is only 93.2 percent of a real mile. The mile itself is still a recognised World Athletics event.
| Distance | Miles | Short of a mile by | Laps of 400 m |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1500 m | 0.932057 | 109.344 m | 3.75 |
| 1600 m | 0.994194 | 9.344 m | 4 |
| 1 mile | 1 | 0 m | 4.02336 |
A mile raced on a track starts 9.344 m before the finish line, then runs four full laps. The 1600 m skips that extra stretch. It is 0.58 percent shorter, so a 1600 m time is a little quicker than a mile time for the same effort.
Do not scale a 1500 m time to a mile by the distance ratio alone and call it a race prediction. Pace per mile from this tool tells you the average speed you held, not the time you would run over a longer race.

Factors That Change Your Result
The mile is fixed by law, so a different answer comes from where the meters were measured, which mile you mean, or how you round.
Outer Lanes Are Longer
Only lane 1 gives 400 m per lap. Lanes are 1.22 m wide. Lane 2 adds about 7 m per lap, and each lane beyond adds about 7.7 m more. A lap in lane 2 is about 407.0 m, and a lap in lane 8 is about 453.0 m. Staggered starts fix this for races, but not for casual training laps.
The Retired US Survey Mile
Some older US maps and deeds measure in survey feet, each 1200/3937 m long. A mile of those is 1,609.347 m, so it runs 3.2 mm past the international mile. Since the start of 2023, NIST no longer supports the survey foot for new work.
GPS Drift
A watch samples position every second or so and cuts corners on a tight bend. It often reads a 400 m lap several meters long or short. The painted track distance is the one to trust.
Nautical Miles
A nautical mile is exactly 1,852 m, or 1.1508 statute miles. Mixing the two puts a distance off by 15 percent.
When to Use a Meters to Miles Converter
Track Training
Coaches write sessions in meters, such as 6 x 800 m. Converting shows the total, 4,800 m, is 2.98 mi. The lap result makes the session easy to plan.
Reading Race Results
Results list the 5000 m and 10,000 m, while many training logs count miles. The 10,000 m is 6.2137 mi, the same as a 10 km road race.
Maps, Trails and Property
Trail signs and site plans often give meters. A 2,500 m trail is 1.553 mi. For shorter spans in feet, use the feet to miles converter.
Engineering and Planning
Drawings may give a road or pipe length in meters while a client thinks in miles. For yard-based fields and courses, the yards to meters converter covers the other side.
Common Meters to Miles Mistakes
1. Multiplying Instead of Dividing
5,000 x 1,609.344 gives 8,046,720, which is 5,000 miles in meters. Meters to miles always makes the number much smaller.
2. Calling the 1600 M a Mile
1600 m is 9.344 m short. The gap is small, but it matters for records and fair comparisons.
3. Treating 400 M as a Quarter Mile
A quarter mile is 402.336 m. Over four laps, the 2.336 m gap per lap adds up to 9.344 m.
4. Dropping Digits from the Factor
Dividing by 1,600 reads 10,000 m as 6.25 mi instead of 6.2137 mi. That is a 0.58 percent error, about 59 m.
5. Counting Laps in an Outer Lane
Four laps in lane 4 is about 1,689 m, not 1,600 m. Use lane 1 for measured distance work.
Accuracy and Limitations
Every answer here is as precise as the digits on screen, since the mile has a legal length in meters.
What it calculates accurately
- Meters to international miles and back
- Laps of a standard 400 m track measured in lane 1
- The gap between any distance and one mile
- Average pace per mile and per kilometer
What it does not account for
- Longer laps in outer lanes or indoor 200 m tracks
- GPS error, hills, wind or course tangents
- Nautical miles and the retired US survey mile
- Race-time predictions over other distances
How We Calculate Meters to Miles

How many meters are in a mile?
There are exactly 1,609.344 meters in one international mile. The figure comes from 5,280 feet at 0.3048 m per foot.
How many miles is 400 meters?
400 meters is 0.248548 miles, just under a quarter mile. A true quarter mile is 402.336 m.
How many laps of a track make a mile?
A mile is 4.02336 laps of a 400 m track in lane 1. That is four laps plus 9.344 m.
How far is 1500 meters in miles?
1500 meters is 0.932057 miles. It is 109.344 m shorter than a mile, even though runners call it the metric mile.
How many miles is a 5000 m race?
A 5000 m race is 3.106856 miles, usually shown as 3.1 mi. It is 12.5 laps of a standard track.
How many miles is 10,000 meters?
10,000 meters is 6.213712 miles. That equals 25 laps of a 400 m track, or the distance of a 10 km road race.
Is 1600 meters the same as a mile?
No. 1600 meters is 0.994194 miles, which leaves it 9.344 m short of the full distance.
How do I convert meters to miles in my head?
Divide the meters by 1,600. The answer is 0.58 percent too high: 8,000 m gives 5 mi against a true 4.971 mi.
What pace per mile is a 25 minute 5000 m?
A 25:00 5000 m is an average of 8:02.8 per mile. It is also exactly 5:00 per kilometer.
Why does my track lap look longer on my watch?
Your lane matters. A lap in lane 2 is about 407 m, and GPS cuts or widens the bends, so the watch rarely shows exactly 400 m.
Does this converter store my distances?
No. Every calculation happens on your own device and no distance is uploaded. The Save button keeps entries in this browser only.
