Running Pace Calculator

Quick answer

Speed in mph is 60 divided by your pace in minutes per mile. A 10:00 mile pace is 6.000 mph, or 9.656 km/h, which is 6:13 per km. Finish time is distance times pace, so a marathon at 8:00 per mile takes 3:29:45.

How to Use the Pace Calculator

  1. Pick a mode. Pace to speed and speed to pace convert one number. Finish time and required pace plan a race.
  2. Enter your pace as minutes and seconds, and choose per mile or per km. For speed, choose mph or km/h.
  3. For a race, pick the distance. Choose Custom to type any distance in km or miles.
  4. Read the headline result, the other units, and the effort band. Finish time mode also lists a split for each mile or km.

For example, choose Finish time, pick Marathon, and enter 8 minutes 0 seconds per mile. The finish time is 3:29:45, and the halfway split is 1:44:53.

How Are Pace and Speed Related?

Pace is time per distance, and speed is distance per time. Each one is the inverse of the other, so you divide 60 by one to get the other.

Pace to speed: mph = 60 / (minutes per mile); km/h = 60 / (minutes per km)

A 10:00 mile pace is 60 / 10 = 6 mph. A 7:30 mile pace is 60 / 7.5 = 8 mph.

Because the link is an inverse, equal steps do not match up. On a treadmill, going from 5 to 6 mph moves your pace from 12:00 to 10:00, a 2-minute change. Going from 9 to 10 mph moves it from 6:40 to 6:00, only 40 seconds.

Put the other way, each second of pace is worth more speed at fast paces. Cutting 7:00 to 6:00 per mile adds 1.429 mph. Cutting 12:00 to 11:00 adds only 0.455 mph.

Miles and kilometers: 1 mile = 1609.344 m; minutes per km = minutes per mile / 1.609344

The international mile is exactly 1609.344 meters, as NIST lists it. This calculator uses that exact value, not 1.6.

How Long Are the Standard Race Distances?

A marathon is 42.195 km and a half marathon is 21.0975 km, as World Athletics defines them. A 5K is 5 km and a 10K is 10 km.

Finish time and required pace: time = distance x pace; pace = time / distance

The marathon length, 26 miles 385 yards, dates from the 1908 London Olympics and was fixed in 1921. Our race time predictions guide covers how to predict a longer race from a shorter one.

What Treadmill Speed Matches My Pace?

Treadmills show speed, not pace. Use Pace to speed mode to find the setting for a target pace, or use this table.

Treadmill mphkm/hPace per milePace per km
5.08.0512:007:27
5.58.8510:556:47
6.09.6610:006:13

7.011.278:345:20
7.512.078:004:58

9.014.486:404:09
9.515.296:193:55
10.016.096:003:44

On a km/h treadmill the math is simpler: 10 km/h is 6:00 per km, 12 km/h is 5:00 per km, and 15 km/h is 4:00 per km.

Most treadmills step in 0.1 mph or 0.1 km/h, so pick the nearest setting. A 9:00 mile needs 6.667 mph; 6.7 mph gives 8:57 per mile.

Common Mistakes

1. Mixing Decimal Minutes With Minutes and Seconds

8.5 minutes is 8:30, not 8:50. Multiply the decimal by 60 to get seconds. This calculator reads a decimal in the minutes box as decimal minutes and tells you the min:sec value.

2. Using 1.6 Instead of 1.609344

Dividing 42.195 km by 1.6 gives 26.372 miles, not 26.219. At 8:00 per mile that adds 73.5 seconds: the marathon time goes from 3:29:45.0 to 3:30:58.5.

3. Mixing Up Per Mile and Per Km

A 5:00 pace per km is 8:03 per mile. Entering it as per mile would predict a marathon about 1 hour 20 minutes too fast.

4. Rounding to 60 Seconds

A pace of 7:59.6 rounds to 8:00, not 7:60. The calculator rounds the total seconds first, then splits it into minutes and seconds.

5. Expecting Your GPS to Match the Course

Race courses are measured along the shortest line a runner could take. Weaving around people and taking wide turns adds distance, so your watch often reads a little long.

How We Calculate

Meters per second: m/s = 1609.344 / (seconds per mile) = 1000 / (seconds per km)
Units
Every input is turned into seconds per meter first. 1 mile = 1609.344 m exactly, and 1 km/h = 1/3.6 m/s.
Speed
mph = 3600 / (seconds per mile), km/h = 3600 / (seconds per km). Shown to 3 decimals.
Pace display
Total seconds are rounded to the nearest whole second, then split into minutes and seconds, so a pace never shows :60.
Finish time
Distance x pace, shown as h:mm:ss. Splits are cumulative times at each whole mile or km in your pace unit.
Required pace
Target time / distance. The exact pace, to 0.1 second, is shown in the working.
Effort band
A rough label from pace alone: 10:00 per mile or slower is easy, 8:30 to 9:59 is steady, 7:00 to 8:29 is tempo, and faster than 7:00 is fast. It is not a training zone or medical advice.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I convert running pace to speed?

Divide 60 by your pace in minutes. A 10:00 mile pace is 60 / 10 = 6 mph. An 8:30 mile pace is 60 / 8.5 = 7.059 mph. The same rule works for km: a 5:00 per km pace is 60 / 5 = 12 km/h.

What is 8.5 minutes per mile in minutes and seconds?

8.5 minutes is 8 minutes and 30 seconds, written 8:30. It is not 8:50. Multiply the decimal part by 60 to get seconds: 0.5 x 60 = 30. Likewise 9.25 minutes is 9:15.

How do I convert minutes per mile to minutes per km?

Divide the pace by 1.609344, the number of kilometers in one international mile. A 10:00 mile pace is 600 / 1.609344 = 372.8 seconds, which is 6:13 per km. To go the other way, multiply by 1.609344.

What pace do I need to run a half marathon in under 2 hours?

You need to average 9:09 per mile or faster, or 5:41 per km or faster. A 9:09 pace gives 1:59:57 and a 5:41 pace gives 1:59:54, while 9:10 per mile gives 2:00:10. So keep your pace < 9:10 per mile, with a small buffer for turns and water stops.

How long is a marathon in miles?

A marathon is 42.195 km, which is 26 miles 385 yards, or about 26.219 miles. At a 10:00 mile pace it takes 4:22:11. A half marathon is 21.0975 km, about 13.109 miles.

What treadmill speed matches a 9:00 mile pace?

Divide 60 by 9 to get 6.667 mph. Most treadmills step in 0.1 mph, so 6.7 mph gives an 8:57 mile and 6.6 mph gives a 9:05 mile. On a km/h treadmill, a 9:00 mile is 10.73 km/h.

Is the effort band on this calculator a training zone?

No. The easy, steady, tempo and fast labels are a rough guide based only on pace. The same pace can be easy for a trained runner and hard for a beginner. Use how you feel, such as the talk test, and ask a doctor before starting hard training.
