Dekagram To Kilogram Converter

Quick answer

To convert dekagrams to kilograms, divide the dekagrams by 100. One dekagram (dag) is 10 grams, and a kilogram is 1,000 grams, so 1 dag equals exactly 0.01 kg. For example, 45 dag is 0.45 kg and 150 dag is 1.5 kg. To reverse it, multiply kilograms by 100.

How to Use the Dekagram to Kilogram Converter

  1. Leave the mode on Dekagrams to kilograms, or pick kg to dag, or dag to grams.
  2. Enter the mass. A value such as 12.5 dag is fine, and so is 0.
  3. Read the result. The cards list the factor, the reverse, grams, ounces and the same mass in hectograms.
ResultWhat it means
ResultThe converted mass, shown to 12 significant figures with no float noise.
Exact factor1 dag = 0.01 kg, or 1 kg = 100 dag. Both are exact by definition.
Reverse directionThe factor for going the other way.
GramsThe mass in grams, since 1 dag = 10 g. The grams mode shows kilograms here.
Avoirdupois ouncesA US check: 1 dag is about 0.353 oz.
HectogramsThe next step up the ladder: 10 dag = 1 hg.

What Is a Dekagram?

A dekagram (symbol dag) is a metric unit of mass equal to 10 grams, or one hundredth of a kilogram. The name joins the SI prefix deka, meaning 10^1, to the gram.

The dekagram has one feature no other prefixed unit shares: its prefix symbol has two letters. In the BIPM prefix table every symbol is a single character except da. That is why the unit is written dag, not dg. The symbol dg already belongs to the decigram.

The spelling differs by source. NIST, which sets US usage, writes deka and dekagram. The BIPM prefix table writes deca. Both names mean the same factor of 10, and the symbol da is the same in both.

On the NIST ladder of mass units, 10 grams make 1 dekagram and 10 dekagrams make 1 hectogram. The dekagram is the first step above the gram.

How Does Dekagram to Kilogram Conversion Work?

You divide by 100, because a kilogram is 10^3 g, a dekagram is 10^1 g, and 10^3 / 10^1 = 10^2 = 100.

Formula: kg = dag / 100 | reverse: dag = kg x 100 | grams: g = dag x 10
  1. Write the dekagrams, for example 64.
  2. Shift the decimal point 2 places left. 64 becomes 0.64. For a single digit such as 3, pad with a zero: 0.03.
  3. Write kg after it. The mass has not changed, only the unit.

Dekagram to Kilogram Worked Examples

Deli order. A slip reads 45 dag of sliced ham. 45 / 100 = 0.45 kg, which is 450 g or about 15.873 oz.

Spice pack. A pouch holds 8 dag. That is 0.08 kg, or 80 g. For a small pack like this, grams read more easily.

Larger bag. A sack of flour is marked 150 dag. Divide by 100 to get 1.5 kg.

Reverse. A shopper wants 1.2 kg of apples and the scale reads in dekagrams. 1.2 x 100 = 120 dag. To see the grams on the way, the kg to grams converter gives 1,200 g.

Factors That Change Your Result

The factor of 100 is fixed, so these four points decide whether your figure is right.

Reading the Symbol

dag and dg differ by a factor of 100. A recipe card that says 5 dg means 0.5 g, while 5 dag means 50 g. Check the letters before you convert.

Deka vs Deca Spelling

A European text may write decagram and a US text dekagram. Both are the same unit, so the factor does not change.

Rounding

Two decimals in kilograms keep every whole dekagram. One decimal keeps only whole hectograms and can hide up to 5 dag.

Scale Readout

A scale that reads in steps of 1 dag cannot show single grams. Record what the display supports.

Dekagram vs Decigram vs Hectogram Compared

These three units look alike on paper but span a factor of 1,000 from smallest to largest.

UnitSymbolGramsKilograms
Decigramdg0.1 g0.0001 kg
Gramg1 g0.001 kg
Dekagramdag10 g0.01 kg
Hectogramhg100 g0.1 kg
Kilogramkg1,000 g1 kg

The decigram is a sub-multiple (deci = 10^-1). The dekagram and hectogram are multiples. Large numbers such as 2.5 x 10^4 dag are easier to check with the scientific notation calculator.

When to Use a Dekagram to Kilogram Converter

Reading a Mass Written in Dag

Any slip, label or table in dekagrams can be turned into kilograms for a total or into grams for a recipe. The grams to ounces converter takes the grams on to US ounces.

Place-value Lessons

Teachers use the gram, dekagram, hectogram and kilogram ladder to show that each metric step is a factor of 10. Converting dag to kg is a two-step jump on that ladder.

Prefix Practice

The deka prefix appears in other units too, such as the dekameter (dam) and the dekaliter (daL) in the NIST tables. Once dag to kg makes sense, the metric converter covers length and volume the same way.

Common Dekagram Conversion Mistakes

1. Writing Dg for Dekagram

dg is the decigram. A dekagram is dag. Mixing them makes the answer 100 times too large or too small.

2. Dividing by 10 Instead of 100

Dividing by 10 turns dekagrams into hectograms, not kilograms. You need two steps of 10.

3. Writing Dag or DAG

All letters of the symbol are lowercase: dag. A capital D is not an SI prefix at all.

4. Adding a Period or an S

Write 45 dag, not 45 dag. or 45 dags. SI symbols take no plural and no period.

5. Assuming Decagram Is a Different Unit

Decagram and dekagram are two spellings of one unit, 10 g.

Accuracy and Limitations

The factor is exact, so the only error comes from the measured mass or the rounding you choose.

What it calculates accurately

  • Dekagrams to kilograms and back, with the exact factor of 100
  • Dekagrams to grams with the exact factor of 10
  • Ounces from the exact avoirdupois ounce
  • Tiny and huge values in scientific notation when needed

What it does not account for

  • Packaging or tare on a store scale
  • Troy ounces used for precious metals
  • Volume units, which need a density
  • Local rounding rules for trade

Frequently Asked Questions About Dekagrams

How many dekagrams make 1 kilogram?

Exactly 100 dekagrams make 1 kilogram. Each dekagram is 10 g, and 100 x 10 g = 1,000 g.

What is 1 dag in grams?

One dekagram is exactly 10 grams. The prefix deka means ten.

What is 30 dag in kg?

Thirty dekagrams is 0.3 kg, which is 300 g.

Is dag the same as dg?

No. dag is the dekagram, 10 g, and dg is the decigram, 0.1 g. The dekagram is 100 times heavier.

Why is the dekagram symbol three letters long?

The prefix symbol da has two letters, and g is added for gram. da is the only SI prefix symbol with more than one character.

Is it spelled dekagram or decagram?

Both spellings are in use. NIST uses deka for US English, and the BIPM prefix table uses deca. The value, 10 g, is the same.

How many ounces is 1 dekagram?

One dekagram is about 0.3527 avoirdupois ounces, a little over a third of an ounce.

How do I convert grams to dekagrams?

Divide grams by 10. For example, 250 g is 25 dag.

How many dekagrams are in a pound?

One pound is about 45.36 dag, since 1 lb is 453.59237 g exactly.
