The X (Twitter) profile optimization checklist tests your profile against items X Help documents: a display name within 50 characters, a username within 15 characters, a bio within 160 characters, a profile photo, a header image, a location, a website and a pinned post. The result is the percentage of checks passed. It is not a ranking prediction.

How to Use the X Profile Optimization Checklist
The checklist reads your display name, username and bio as you type and counts every character. Five yes or no answers cover the items it cannot see.
- Type or paste your display name and your username. A leading @ sign is ignored.
- Paste your bio. The tool counts characters against the 160 limit.
- Answer the profile photo, header image, location, website and pinned post questions, then work through the still-to-do list.
| Result | What it means |
|---|---|
| Checklist completeness | Checks passed divided by 8, as a percentage. |
| Display name length | Characters used out of the 50 allowed, and how many are left. |
| Username | Characters used out of the 15 allowed, and whether every character is valid. |
| Bio length | Characters used out of the 160 allowed. |
| Images | Whether a profile photo and a header image are in place. |
| Checkmark basics | Whether the profile has the display name and profile photo that blue checkmark eligibility requires. |
| Still to do | Each failed check as a plain task. |
What Is an X Profile Optimization Score?
An X profile optimization score is a single number that sums up how completely a profile is filled in. X itself issues no such score. Every score you see online, including this one, is a third-party construct, so what matters is what goes into it.
This checklist counts only items that X Help documents. The X Help page on customizing a profile, read on October 3, 2026, lists what you can edit: header photo, profile photo, name, bio, location, website and birth date. It adds that you can pin a post, which becomes the first post visitors see.
What the Score Is Not
The score is not a ranking prediction. X publishes no statement that a complete profile ranks higher, appears in more follow suggestions or converts more visitors. A profile at 100% can still gain no followers, and a profile at 50% can grow fast. The percentage shows only how many documented fields are filled in and inside their limits.
Birth date is left out. X lets you control who sees it, and adding it is a personal choice. The same checklist idea for video metadata is on the YouTube video SEO score calculator.
How Does the Profile Checklist Calculator Work?
Checklist completeness = checks passed / 8 x 100- Display name: passes when it has 1 to 50 characters.
- Username: passes when it has 1 to 15 characters, uses only letters, numbers and underscores, and does not contain the word Admin.
- Bio: passes when it has 1 to 160 characters.
- Profile photo: passes when you answer yes.
- Header image: passes when you answer yes.
- Location: passes when you answer yes.
- Website: passes when you answer yes.
- Pinned post: passes when you answer yes.
Every check counts the same, because X publishes no weights. Text over a documented limit turns the verdict red, since X will not accept it.
X Profile Checklist Example
Example values only. A pottery studio reviews its profile before a product launch.
| Check | Input | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Display name | Maya Chen Ceramics | 18 of 50 characters, 32 left: pass |
| Username | mayachenclay | 12 of 15 characters, valid: pass |
| Bio | Three short sentences | 94 of 160 characters, 66 left: pass |
| Profile photo | Yes | Pass |
| Header image | No | Fail |
| Location | Yes | Pass |
| Website | Yes | Pass |
| Pinned post | No | Fail |
Checklist completeness = 6 / 8 x 100 = 75%. The still-to-do list shows two tasks: upload a header image and pin a post. With both done, the result is 8 / 8 = 100%. A longer username such as riverbend_bike_repair would fail. It has 21 characters, which is 6 over the limit.
Factors That Change Your Checklist Result
Character Limits
X Help gives a maximum of 160 characters for the bio. Its username page states that a username cannot be longer than 15 characters, while a name can run to 50 characters.
Username Characters
A username can contain only letters A to Z, numbers 0 to 9 and underscores. Symbols, dashes and spaces are rejected. X Help also says usernames containing the word Admin cannot be claimed.
Image Sizes
The recommended size is 400 x 400 pixels for a profile photo and 1500 x 500 pixels for a header, which is a 3 to 1 shape. Check a crop with the aspect ratio calculator. X Help notes that about 60 pixels at the top and bottom of a header can be cropped on some screens, which leaves a safe band 380 pixels tall.
Image Formats
X supports JPEG, GIF and PNG files. Animated GIFs are not supported for profile or header images. The maximum file size for a profile photo is 2 MB.
The Pinned Post
A pinned post stays above your other posts. The X Ads glossary recommends refreshing it every quarter.
Profile Checklist vs a Blue Checkmark
A complete profile and a blue checkmark are different things. The checklist covers fields anyone can fill in for free, and the checkmark depends on a paid subscription plus eligibility rules.
| Point | Profile checklist | Blue checkmark |
|---|---|---|
| What it shows | Documented profile fields are filled in | An active Premium subscription that meets eligibility rules |
| Cost | Free | Paid subscription, Premium or Premium+ tier |
| Profile items required | All 8 on this page for 100% | A display name and a profile photo |
| Other requirements | None | Active in the past 30 days, a confirmed phone number, no signs of deception |
| Does it prove identity? | No | No. X Help says it does not mean the account is ID verified |
X Help adds that a gold checkmark marks an official organization account and a grey checkmark marks a government or multilateral account. To weigh the subscription cost against your own returns, use the X Premium subscription ROI calculator.
When to Use an X Profile Checklist
Setting Up a New Account
Run the draft name, username and bio through the counters before you save them. X Help notes that during first set-up the display name option appears only after a profile photo and header photo are uploaded.
Before a Launch or Campaign
New visitors land on the profile first. A zero in the still-to-do list means no documented field is empty.
Auditing a Client Account
The still-to-do line is a ready task list. Copy the report and send it.
After the Profile Is Complete
A complete profile is only a starting point. Track what happens next with the X follower growth calculator.
Common X Profile Mistakes
1. Treating a Score as a Ranking Forecast
No outside tool sees how X ranks or recommends accounts. A checklist confirms complete fields and nothing more.
2. Chasing an Ideal Bio Length
X publishes a 160 character limit and no ideal length. Advice such as 140 to 160 characters, or 3 to 5 keywords, comes from third parties.
3. Changing Name or Photo on a Checkmarked Account
X Help states that a change to the profile photo, display name or username causes a temporary loss of the blue checkmark until the account is reviewed again.
4. Putting Key Text at the Header Edge
Up to 60 pixels at the top and bottom can be cropped. Keep text and logos inside the middle band.
5. Uploading an Animated GIF
Animated GIFs are not supported for profile or header images.
6. Leaving an Old Post Pinned
A pinned post about last year's offer is the first thing a visitor reads.
Accuracy and Limitations
The counters are exact for the text you type. The percentage covers documented profile fields and nothing beyond them.
What it calculates accurately
- Display name length against the 50 character limit.
- Username length and characters against the documented rules.
- Bio length against the 160 character limit.
- How many of the 8 documented items are in place.
What it does not account for
- Ranking, recommendations or follower growth.
- Whether a username is still available to claim.
- The quality of the photo, header or wording.
- Image size and format, which you check before upload.
A browser counts some emoji as 2 characters, so a bio full of emoji can read slightly longer here than on X.

How long can an X bio be?
An X bio can be up to 160 characters. X Help states the maximum on its page about customizing a profile, and the counter here shows how many you have left.
How long can an X username be?
A username can be up to 15 characters. X Help says it can contain only letters, numbers and underscores, with no symbols, dashes or spaces.
How long can an X display name be?
A display name can be up to 50 characters. It is separate from the username, which has its own 15 character limit.
What size should an X header image be?
X Help recommends 1500 x 500 pixels for a header image. About 60 pixels at the top and bottom can be cropped on some screens.
What size should an X profile photo be?
X Help recommends 400 x 400 pixels. The file must be JPEG, GIF or PNG, and the maximum file size for a profile photo is 2 MB.
Does X give profiles an optimization score?
No. X publishes no profile score. Any score from a tool is that tool's own method, and this one is a checklist completeness percentage.
Does a 100% checklist mean more followers?
No. The percentage shows that documented fields are filled in. X publishes no link between a complete profile and ranking, suggestions or follower growth.
What does the blue checkmark mean on X?
X Help says the blue checkmark means the account has an active Premium subscription and meets eligibility requirements. It does not mean the account has been ID verified.
How do I pin a post on X?
Open the menu at the top of the post on your profile, select Pin to your profile and confirm. X Help says a pinned post is the first post visitors see.
Is my name or bio saved?
No. The text stays in your browser and nothing is sent to us. Save keeps a result only in this browser.
