What Is the Radiologist Salary Calculator?

The radiologist salary calculator is a gross pay converter tied to the Bureau of Labor Statistics wage table for radiologists. It shows your pay per year, month, pay period, week and hour, and the percentile band that pay falls in.

Radiologists are physicians who review and interpret x rays and other medical images, such as ultrasounds, to diagnose injuries or diseases. Diagnostic radiologists read images and recommend treatment or more testing. Interventional radiologists also treat patients with minimally invasive techniques.

Radiologists (29-1224), May 2025Annual wageHourly wage
10th percentile$89,010$42.79
25th percentile$216,800$104.23
50th percentile (median)$420,860$202.34
75th percentile$506,010$243.27
90th percentile$594,410$285.78
Mean (average)$381,530$183.43
Employment26,770 jobs

The table is occupation code 29-1224. Two features stand out. First, the spread is wide: the 25th percentile is $216,800 and the 75th is $506,010. Second, the mean of $381,530 is $39,330 below the median. A long low tail, with a 10th percentile of $89,010, pulls the average down. BLS does not say which jobs make up that tail, and this page does not guess.

The BLS Reporting Limit

Older releases did not print radiologist wages as numbers. BLS showed them as equal to or greater than $115.00 per hour or $239,200 per year. BLS states that, beginning with the May 2025 estimates, it publishes specific figures for many of those percentiles. All five radiologist percentiles are dollar figures in the profile read on 2026-10-02. The tool is built for either case. Where BLS shows only a limit, the result reads at or above the BLS reporting limit, and no percentile is estimated above it.

How Does the Radiologist Salary Calculator Work?

The calculator converts your pay to one year, then finds its place between two published BLS percentiles. BLS publishes five percentile wages per occupation. The tool draws a straight line between the two nearest ones.

Formula: Annual = hourly x hours per week x weeks per year
Percentile = P_low + (pay - wage_low) / (wage_high - wage_low) x (P_high - P_low)
  1. Annual pay: an hourly wage is multiplied by your hours and weeks. A salary is used as entered.
  2. Hourly pay: annual pay is divided by hours per week times weeks per year.
  3. Band: the tool finds the two BLS percentiles on each side of your pay.
  4. Approximate percentile: for $450,000 the nearest points are the median ($420,860) and the 75th percentile ($506,010). 50 + (450,000 - 420,860) / (506,010 - 420,860) x 25 = 58.6, shown as about the 59th.
  5. Gap: annual pay minus the BLS median of $420,860.

Pay below the 10th percentile or above the 90th gets no number, because BLS publishes no points beyond them. A wage that BLS shows only as at or above its reporting limit is never replaced with a guess. BLS annual wages equal the hourly wage times 2,080 hours. A part-time schedule lowers annual pay but not the hourly rate, so the tool also places your hourly rate. To convert a salary on other schedules, try the salary to hourly calculator.

Radiologist Salary Example

A radiologist earns a $450,000 salary for an average 45-hour week and 48 worked weeks. A second group offers $495,000 for the same workload.

  1. Hours per year: 45 x 48 = 2,160.
  2. Hourly pay: 450,000 / 2,160 = $208.33.
  3. Monthly pay: 450,000 / 12 = $37,500.00. Biweekly pay: $17,307.69.
  4. Annual percentile: $450,000 sits between $420,860 and $506,010, at about the 59th percentile.
  5. Hourly percentile: $208.33 sits between $202.34 and $243.27, at about the 54th percentile.
  6. Gap to the median: 450,000 - 420,860 = +$29,140.00, or +6.9%.
  7. Second offer: $495,000 is +$45,000.00 (+10.0%) and sits at about the 72nd percentile.

This radiologist works 2,160 hours a year, 80 more than the 2,080 behind BLS annual wages. The longer year makes the annual percentile look better than the hourly one. The second offer moves annual pay close to the 75th percentile of $506,010.

Factors That Change Radiologist Pay

Industry

Offices of physicians employ 14,970 of the 26,770 radiologists in the survey, or 55.9 percent. General hospitals employ 6,060, medical and diagnostic laboratories 3,520, and colleges and universities 1,220.

Industry (BLS, May 2025)Mean hourly wageRelative standard error
Outpatient care centers$263.9215.9%
Offices of physicians$204.573.6%
Medical and diagnostic laboratories$176.445.8%
Specialty hospitals$174.033.2%
Employment services$154.8222.4%

Outpatient care centers top the list but employ only 310 radiologists, and the estimate carries a large error.

Partnership

The wage survey covers employees. It does not cover the self-employed or owners and partners of unincorporated firms. Partner distributions from a private group may be missing from the table.

Workload

BLS wages are straight-time pay and exclude premium pay. The Handbook notes that many physicians work long shifts, with irregular and overnight hours or call. Enter your real hours so the hourly figure is honest.

Sample Size

Radiology is a small occupation. The employment estimate has a 7.3 percent relative standard error and the mean wage 2.6 percent. Treat small gaps to the median with care.

Radiologist Pay vs Other Physicians

Radiologists have the third-highest median among the physician occupations that BLS lists. All figures are May 2025 medians from the Occupational Outlook Handbook, read on 2026-10-02.

OccupationMedian annual wageDifference from radiologists
Pediatric surgeons$559,030+$138,170
Cardiologists$496,010+$75,150
Radiologists (29-1224)$420,8600
Anesthesiologists$391,490-$29,370
Dermatologists$328,730-$92,130
All physicians and surgeons$275,930-$144,930
Family medicine physicians$244,180-$176,680

The radiologist median is 1.53 times the median for all physicians and surgeons.

When to Use This Calculator

Benchmarking an Employed Contract

Enter the base salary plus incentive pay you reliably receive. The band shows the contract against employed radiologists nationwide.

Converting an Hourly or Shift Rate

Enter the hourly rate with real hours and weeks. A high hourly rate over 36 hours and 46 weeks can still fall below the annual median.

Planning After Residency

Physicians finishing training can set a first salary against their loan balance with the student loan payoff calculator.

Common Mistakes with Radiologist Pay Data

1. Using the Mean as the Typical Wage

For radiologists the mean, $381,530, is below the median, $420,860. Half of employed radiologists earn more than the median.

2. Quoting the Old $239,200 Figure

That number was a reporting limit, not a wage. The May 2025 table prints real percentiles above it.

3. Comparing Partner Income with Employee Wages

Partnership profit is not a wage in the survey. A partner comparing against this table compares unlike things.

4. Annualising a Shift Rate at 2,080 Hours

Contract and part-time work rarely fills 52 weeks of 40 hours. Enter the schedule you actually work.

5. Trusting the Top Industry Figure

The $263.92 outpatient mean rests on 310 jobs and a 15.9 percent error. It is a weak guide to a single offer.

Radiologist Education and Job Outlook

Radiologists need a medical degree and a residency. Physicians typically complete a bachelor degree, then 4 years of medical school, then 3 to 9 years of internship and residency, depending on specialty. A subspecialty fellowship adds 1 to 3 years.

BLS projects radiologist employment to grow 3 percent from 2025 to 2035, from 28,700 jobs to 29,600. Employment of all physicians and surgeons is projected to grow 4 percent. The 28,700 count includes the self-employed and is larger than the 26,770 employee jobs in the wage table.

Accuracy and Limitations

The pay conversion is exact arithmetic. The percentile is an estimate, because BLS publishes only five points of the wage distribution for radiologists. The result is an estimate from survey data. It is not a pay offer and not a prediction of your pay.

What it calculates accurately

  • Annual, monthly, biweekly, weekly and hourly gross pay from your inputs.
  • Which two BLS percentiles your pay sits between.
  • The dollar and percent gap to the BLS median.
  • The difference between two offers on the same schedule.

What it does not account for

  • Tax, benefits, retirement contributions or student loan payments. Owners and contractors can estimate one piece with the self-employment tax calculator.
  • Your state, metro area, experience or employer. The table is national.
  • Overtime pay, on-call pay, shift differentials, profit sharing and year-end bonuses. BLS leaves these out of its wage figures.
  • Partner distributions and signing bonuses.
  • Sampling error. The radiologist mean wage has a 2.6 percent relative standard error.
  • The exact shape of the wage curve between two percentiles. The straight line is an approximation.

How We Calculate the Result

Method
Unit conversion of your pay, then linear interpolation between published BLS percentile wages.
Data
BLS Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics, May 2025, national estimates for 29-1224 Radiologists. Read on 2026-10-02. The figures are fixed constants on this page, not live data.
Inputs used
Your gross pay, pay basis, hours per week, weeks per year and an optional second offer.
Assumptions
BLS annual wages assume 2,080 hours a year. Monthly, biweekly and weekly pay spread annual pay over 12, 26 and 52 periods.
Rounding
Money to the cent. The percentile to the nearest whole number, labelled approximate.
Edge cases
Below the 10th or above the 90th percentile the tool shows the band only. A percentile that BLS reports as at or above its limit stays a limit. Hours above 168 or weeks above 52 give an error.
Not included
Tax, benefits, state or metro pay, experience, specialty or negotiation adjustments. No third-party salary data.

Frequently Asked Questions About Radiologist Pay

How much does a radiologist make a year?

The BLS median annual wage for radiologists was $420,860 in May 2025. The mean was $381,530. The middle half earned between $216,800 and $506,010.

How much do radiologists make per hour?

The BLS median hourly wage was $202.34 in May 2025. The 75th percentile was $243.27 and the 90th was $285.78.

Why did BLS used to show radiologist pay as $239,200 or more?

Older releases could not estimate wages inside the top open-ended interval, so BLS printed a limit of $115.00 per hour or $239,200 per year. Beginning with May 2025, BLS publishes specific figures for many of those percentiles.

What does at or above the BLS reporting limit mean in this tool?

It means BLS published a floor instead of a number for that percentile. The tool then reports the band it can prove and gives no percentile above it. No figure is filled in.

Why is the radiologist mean lower than the median?

The low end of the distribution is far below the middle. The 10th percentile is $89,010 and the 25th is $216,800, which pulls the average under the median of $420,860.

Which industry employs the most radiologists?

Offices of physicians employ 14,970 radiologists, more than half of the 26,770 in the wage survey. General medical and surgical hospitals employ 6,060.

Are radiologists among the highest-paid physicians?

Yes. Among the physician occupations BLS lists, only pediatric surgeons ($559,030) and cardiologists ($496,010) had a higher median in May 2025.

What is the job outlook for radiologists?

BLS projects 3 percent growth from 2025 to 2035, from 28,700 to 29,600 jobs. That equals the 3 percent projected for all occupations.

Does the calculator include partnership income or tax?

No. It uses the gross pay you enter and estimates no tax. BLS wage data exclude owners and partners of unincorporated firms.

How precise is the percentile for radiologists?

It is approximate. The tool interpolates between five published points, and the radiologist estimates carry more sampling error than those of larger occupations.
