What Is the Dentist Salary Calculator?

The dentist salary calculator is a pay converter joined to the official US wage table for general dentists. You enter your own pay. The tool returns the same pay per year, month, pay period, week and hour, then places it among Bureau of Labor Statistics percentiles.

Dentists diagnose and treat problems with teeth, gums and related parts of the mouth. They remove decay, fill cavities, repair or remove damaged teeth, read x rays, give anesthetics and prescribe medication. Dentists in private practice also run the business and supervise hygienists and assistants.

Dentists, General (29-1021), May 2025Annual wageHourly wage
10th percentile$86,250$41.47
25th percentile$125,710$60.44
50th percentile (median)$170,950$82.19
75th percentile$224,040$107.71
90th percentile$319,630$153.67
Mean (average)$191,350$91.99
Employment124,390 jobs

The table uses occupation code 29-1021, Dentists, General. One general dentist in ten earned less than $86,250. One in ten earned more than $319,630. The mean of $191,350 is $20,400 above the median, because a small group of very high earners lifts the average. The median is the better guide to a typical wage.

The tool is not a pay prediction. It applies no state, experience or specialty multipliers, because BLS does not publish them in this table.

How Does the Dentist Salary Calculator Work?

The calculator converts your pay to one year, then finds its place between two published BLS percentiles. BLS publishes five percentile wages per occupation. The tool draws a straight line between the two nearest ones.

Formula: Annual = hourly x hours per week x weeks per year
Percentile = P_low + (pay - wage_low) / (wage_high - wage_low) x (P_high - P_low)
  1. Annual pay: an hourly wage is multiplied by your hours and weeks. A salary is used as entered.
  2. Hourly pay: annual pay is divided by hours per week times weeks per year.
  3. Band: the tool finds the two BLS percentiles on each side of your pay.
  4. Approximate percentile: for $165,000 the nearest points are the 25th percentile ($125,710) and the median ($170,950). 25 + (165,000 - 125,710) / (170,950 - 125,710) x 25 = 46.7, shown as about the 47th.
  5. Gap: annual pay minus the BLS median of $170,950.

Pay below the 10th percentile or above the 90th gets no number, because BLS publishes no points beyond them. A wage that BLS shows only as at or above its reporting limit is never replaced with a guess. BLS annual wages equal the hourly wage times 2,080 hours. A part-time schedule lowers annual pay but not the hourly rate, so the tool also places your hourly rate. To convert a salary on other schedules, try the salary to hourly calculator.

Dentist Salary Example

An associate dentist earns a $165,000 salary for a 36-hour week and 50 paid weeks. A second practice offers $185,000 on the same schedule.

  1. Hours per year: 36 x 50 = 1,800.
  2. Hourly pay: 165,000 / 1,800 = $91.67.
  3. Monthly pay: 165,000 / 12 = $13,750.00. Biweekly pay: 165,000 / 26 = $6,346.15.
  4. Annual percentile: $165,000 sits between $125,710 and $170,950, at about the 47th percentile.
  5. Hourly percentile: $91.67 sits between $82.19 and $107.71, at about the 59th percentile.
  6. Gap to the median: 165,000 - 170,950 = -$5,950.00, or -3.5%.
  7. Second offer: $185,000 is +$20,000.00 (+12.1%) and sits at about the 57th percentile.

The annual figure looks slightly below the median. The hourly figure is above it. The reason is the schedule: this dentist works 1,800 hours a year, while BLS annual wages assume 2,080. The hourly percentile is the fairer comparison for a short week.

Factors That Change Dentist Pay

Specialty

Specialists have their own BLS occupation codes and higher medians. The Occupational Outlook Handbook lists these May 2025 median annual wages: oral and maxillofacial surgeons $352,220, prosthodontists $311,180, orthodontists $289,140, all other dental specialists $224,990 and general dentists $170,950. This calculator compares against general dentists only.

Industry

Offices of dentists hold 111,880 of the 124,390 employee jobs, which is 89.9 percent. Smaller industries pay a higher mean wage.

Industry (BLS, May 2025)Mean hourly wage
State government, excluding schools and hospitals$106.64
Other ambulatory health care services$101.65
Insurance carriers$100.75
Medical equipment and supplies manufacturing$95.85
Outpatient care centers$95.62

Ownership

The BLS wage survey covers employees. It does not cover the self-employed or owners and partners of unincorporated practices. The Handbook reports that 12 percent of dentists are self-employed. Owner income is therefore missing from the table.

Hours

The Handbook notes that many dentists work less than 40 hours a week. A four-day week lowers annual pay without lowering the hourly rate. The tool shows both percentiles for that reason.

When to Use This Calculator

Checking an Associate Offer

Enter the guaranteed salary and the contract hours. The band shows whether the offer sits below or above the national median for general dentists.

Pricing a Daily or Hourly Rate

Dentists paid per day or per hour can enter the hourly figure and real weeks worked. The annual result shows what the rate adds up to over a year.

Planning Before Dental School

Students can test whether a wage at the 25th percentile, $125,710, supports their expected debt. Pair the result with the student loan payoff calculator.

Common Mistakes with Dentist Pay Data

1. Comparing Owner Income with the Employee Table

BLS wages exclude owners of unincorporated practices. A practice profit figure and an employee wage measure different things.

2. Using the All-Dentists Median for a General Dentist

The $176,110 figure blends in surgeons and orthodontists. The general dentist median is $170,950.

3. Entering a Production Estimate as Guaranteed Pay

A percentage-of-collections contract pays what the chair produces. Enter last year actual pay, not the best month times twelve.

4. Ignoring a Short Week

A 32-hour salary looks low against a table built on 2,080 hours. Read the hourly percentile before judging the offer.

5. Reading the Mean as Typical

The mean of $191,350 is pulled up by top earners. Half of general dentists earn less than $170,950.

Dentist Education and Job Outlook

Dentists need a doctoral or professional degree and a state license. The Handbook says candidates usually hold a Doctor of Dental Surgery or Doctor of Dental Medicine degree from an accredited program and pass written and clinical exams. Specialists complete postdoctoral training.

BLS projects employment of dentists to grow 6 percent from 2025 to 2035, faster than the average for all occupations. About 4,800 openings a year are projected. General dentist jobs are projected to rise from 141,900 to 150,000. That job count includes the self-employed, so it is larger than the 124,390 employee jobs in the wage table.

Accuracy and Limitations

The pay conversion is exact arithmetic. The percentile is an estimate, because BLS publishes only five points of the wage distribution for general dentists. The result is an estimate from survey data. It is not a pay offer and not a prediction of your pay.

What it calculates accurately

  • Annual, monthly, biweekly, weekly and hourly gross pay from your inputs.
  • Which two BLS percentiles your pay sits between.
  • The dollar and percent gap to the BLS median.
  • The difference between two offers on the same schedule.

What it does not account for

  • Tax, benefits, retirement contributions or student loan payments. Owners and contractors can estimate one piece with the self-employment tax calculator.
  • Your state, metro area, experience or employer. The table is national.
  • Overtime pay, on-call pay, shift differentials, profit sharing and year-end bonuses. BLS leaves these out of its wage figures.
  • Practice owner profit, which the BLS wage survey does not cover.
  • Specialist pay. Surgeons, orthodontists and prosthodontists have separate BLS codes.
  • The exact shape of the wage curve between two percentiles. The straight line is an approximation.

How We Calculate the Result

Method
Unit conversion of your pay, then linear interpolation between published BLS percentile wages.
Data
BLS Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics, May 2025, national estimates for 29-1021 Dentists, General. Read on 2026-10-02. The figures are fixed constants on this page, not live data.
Inputs used
Your gross pay, pay basis, hours per week, weeks per year and an optional second offer.
Assumptions
BLS annual wages assume 2,080 hours a year. Monthly, biweekly and weekly pay spread annual pay over 12, 26 and 52 periods.
Rounding
Money to the cent. The percentile to the nearest whole number, labelled approximate.
Edge cases
Below the 10th or above the 90th percentile the tool shows the band only. A percentile that BLS reports as at or above its limit stays a limit. Hours above 168 or weeks above 52 give an error.
Not included
Tax, benefits, state or metro pay, experience, specialty or negotiation adjustments. No third-party salary data.

Frequently Asked Questions About Dentist Pay

How much do general dentists make a year?

The BLS median annual wage for general dentists was $170,950 in May 2025. The middle half earned between $125,710 and $224,040. The mean was $191,350.

How much do dentists make an hour?

The BLS median hourly wage for general dentists was $82.19 in May 2025. The 25th percentile was $60.44 and the 75th percentile was $107.71.

Does the BLS dentist wage include practice owners?

No. The wage survey covers employees only. It does not cover the self-employed or owners and partners of unincorporated practices, so owner profit is outside the table.

Which dental specialty has the highest BLS median wage?

Oral and maxillofacial surgeons have the highest median at $352,220 in May 2025. Prosthodontists follow at $311,180 and orthodontists at $289,140.

Is dentist pay top-coded by BLS?

Not in the May 2025 table for general dentists. Older releases showed very high wages only as at or above $239,200 a year. Starting with May 2025, BLS publishes dollar figures for many of those percentiles. The 90th percentile for general dentists is $319,630.

Which industries pay general dentists the most?

State government has the highest mean hourly wage at $106.64. Other ambulatory health care services pay $101.65 and insurance carriers pay $100.75. Offices of dentists employ the most general dentists.

What is the job outlook for dentists?

BLS projects 6 percent growth in dentist employment from 2025 to 2035, with about 4,800 openings a year. An older population that keeps more of its teeth is one stated reason.

Does this calculator show take-home pay?

No. Every amount is gross pay before tax, benefits and loan payments. The tool does not estimate tax.

Why does my hourly percentile differ from my annual percentile?

BLS annual wages assume 2,080 hours a year. A dentist who works fewer hours earns less per year at the same hourly rate, so the annual percentile drops while the hourly percentile stays put.

How accurate is the percentile?

It is approximate. BLS publishes five percentile wages, and the tool draws a straight line between the two nearest ones. The true wage curve is not straight.
