How to Use the Pharmacist Salary Calculator

  1. Choose hourly rate or annual salary, the way your pharmacy quotes base pay.
  2. Enter your base pay, your hours per week and your weeks per year. Add other annual pay or a second offer if you have them.
  3. Read your annual gross pay, the pay-period amounts and where your hourly pay sits in the BLS wage table.

What each result tells you:

ResultWhat it means
Annual gross payBase pay for the year plus any other annual pay you entered, before tax.
Monthly, biweekly, weeklyAnnual gross pay divided by 12, 26 and 52.
HourlyBase pay per paid hour. This is the number compared with BLS.
BLS percentile bandThe two published BLS percentiles your hourly pay falls between.
Approximate percentileA straight-line estimate between those two percentiles. BLS does not publish it.
Gap to BLS medianYour hourly pay minus the BLS median hourly wage, in dollars and percent.
Full-time equivalentYour hourly pay times 2,080 hours, the work year BLS uses for annual wages.
Second offer rowsThe second offer as annual and hourly pay, its percentile and the yearly difference.

The first preset is an example, not a typical wage. It shows a pharmacist paid $66.00 an hour for 40 hours a week. That is $137,280.00 a year, about the 42nd percentile.

What Is a Pharmacist Salary?

A pharmacist salary is the gross pay a licensed pharmacist earns in a year, before tax and deductions. Many pharmacists are paid by the hour, so the annual figure depends on the hours and weeks they work.

BLS describes the job in one line: pharmacists dispense prescription medications and give patients information about the drugs and their use. They may also advise physicians on drug selection, dosage, interactions and side effects.

These facts come from the BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, read on 2026-10-02. BLS expects demand to rise in hospitals and clinics. It expects limited demand in retail pharmacies, as chains consolidate and more people fill prescriptions online or by mail.

This tool is for pharmacists and pharmacy students checking an offer or a schedule. It is not a pay quote from any employer.

How Does the Pharmacist Salary Calculator Work?

The calculator converts your pay between time periods, then places your hourly pay in the BLS wage distribution for pharmacists.

Formula: Annual pay = hourly rate x hours per week x weeks per year
Approximate percentile = P1 + (your hourly - W1) / (W2 - W1) x (P2 - P1)
  1. Convert. An hourly rate is multiplied by hours and weeks. A salary is divided by them to get pay per hour.
  2. Add other pay. Overtime, differentials and bonuses you typed are added to the annual total only.
  3. Find the band. Your base hourly pay is checked against the 10th, 25th, 50th, 75th and 90th percentile wages.
  4. Interpolate. W1 and W2 are the two BLS wages around your pay. P1 and P2 are their percentiles.
  5. Measure the gap. Your hourly pay minus the median, then divided by the median.

The table below is the full BLS wage table for pharmacists that the tool uses.

BLS annual wages equal the hourly wage times 2,080 hours. That is 40 hours for 52 weeks. The comparison uses hourly pay so that part-time and long-shift schedules are judged fairly.

Pharmacist Salary Example: 38 Hours and Two Unpaid Weeks

A staff pharmacist earns $64.50 an hour. He averages 38 paid hours a week and takes 2 unpaid weeks, so 50 paid weeks. His annual bonus is $4,000. A hospital offers $69.00 an hour on the same schedule.

StepCalculationResult
Base annual pay64.50 x 38 x 50$122,550.00
Annual gross pay122,550.00 + 4,000$126,550.00
Monthly126,550.00 / 12$10,545.83
BLS band64.50 is between 62.20 and 67.7525th to 50th percentile
Approximate percentile25 + (64.50 - 62.20) / (67.75 - 62.20) x 25About the 35th
Gap to median64.50 - 67.75-$3.25 an hour (-4.8%)
Full-time equivalent64.50 x 2,080$134,160.00
Second offer69 x 38 x 50$131,100.00, +$8,550.00 a year

His base pay of $122,550.00 looks low next to the BLS median of $140,910. Most of that gap is hours. At 2,080 hours his rate pays $134,160.00. The hospital offer moves him from about the 35th to about the 53rd percentile.

Factors That Change Pharmacist Pay

Work Setting

Pharmacies and drug retailers employ 37% of pharmacists and hospitals employ 32%. Neither is in the top five industries for mean pay, which the comparison section lists.

State

California has the highest annual mean wage for pharmacists at $162,340. Four other western states follow.

StateAnnual mean wage
California$162,340
Alaska$161,220
Oregon$159,230
Washington$159,100
Hawaii$153,220

Paid Hours and Weeks

Hourly pharmacists rarely work exactly 2,080 hours. A 36-hour week pays 10% less a year than a 40-hour week at the same rate. Enter your real paid hours. The salary to hourly calculator does the same conversion without the BLS comparison.

Bonus and Overtime

BLS wages exclude overtime pay, shift differentials and nonproduction bonuses. Add them in the other annual pay field. The overtime pay calculator works out overtime from your hours.

A Narrow Middle

Pharmacist pay is tightly grouped. The 25th percentile is $62.20 an hour and the 75th is $77.81. A change of one dollar an hour moves the percentile several points in that range.

Pharmacist Pay Compared Across Industries

Insurance and employee benefit funds pay pharmacists the highest mean wage, $179,390 a year. That is $38,470 above the national mean of $140,920.

IndustryAnnual mean wageVersus national mean
Insurance and Employee Benefit Funds$179,390+$38,470
Outpatient Care Centers$166,820+$25,900
Continuing Care Retirement Communities and Assisted Living Facilities for the Elderly$164,280+$23,360
Medical and Diagnostic Laboratories$161,670+$20,750
Psychiatric and Substance Abuse Hospitals$157,500+$16,580

These are small employers of pharmacists. The table shows where the average is highest, not where most jobs are. Retail and hospital pharmacies hold 69% of the jobs.

Mean vs Median

The mean hourly wage and the median hourly wage are both $67.75. The annual figures differ by only $10. That is unusual. In most occupations a few very high wages pull the mean above the median.

When to Use the Pharmacist Salary Calculator

Comparing a Retail and a Hospital Offer

Enter one offer as base pay and the other as the second offer. The tool shows both percentiles and the yearly difference on the same hours.

Pricing a Part-Time or Floater Schedule

Set the hours and weeks you expect to be paid. The annual figure then reflects your schedule, and the percentile still uses your hourly rate.

Checking a Raise

Type the new rate and read the gap to the median. A raise from $64.50 to $69.00 an hour crosses the national median of $67.75.

Budgeting After Tax

The result is gross pay. Read the gross vs net income guide and the tax brackets guide before you plan a budget or a loan payment from it.

Common Mistakes with Pharmacist Pay Comparisons

1. Counting Unpaid Weeks as Paid

Two unpaid weeks cut annual pay by 3.8% at the same rate. Set weeks per year to the weeks you are paid.

2. Entering a Sign-On Bonus as Base Pay

A one-time bonus is not part of the wage. Put it in the other annual pay field so the percentile stays honest.

3. Comparing a 36-Hour Year with the BLS Annual Wage

BLS annual wages assume 2,080 hours. Compare hourly rates, or use the full-time equivalent row.

4. Reading the National Figure as a Local Rate

The mean in California is $162,340 against $140,920 nationally. This page has national data only.

5. Trusting the Percentile Below the 25th

The 10th and 25th percentiles are $14.47 an hour apart. The 25th and 50th are $5.55 apart. The straight-line estimate is weakest in that wide lower range.

Accuracy and Limitations

The conversion is exact arithmetic. The percentile is an estimate, because BLS publishes only five points of the wage distribution.

What it calculates accurately

  • Annual, monthly, biweekly, weekly and hourly gross pay from your own figures.
  • The BLS percentile band your hourly pay falls in.
  • The dollar and percent gap to the BLS national median.
  • The yearly difference between two offers on the same schedule.

What it does not account for

  • Federal, state and local tax, or any payroll deduction.
  • Your state, metro area, employer, experience or specialty.
  • Benefits such as health insurance, retirement match and paid leave.
  • Wages after May 2025. BLS updates the survey once a year.
  • The value of employer benefits. The old tool on this page added a benefits figure; this one reports gross pay only.

BLS wages are straight-time gross pay. They exclude overtime pay, shift differentials and nonproduction bonuses. Keep those in the other annual pay field so the comparison stays like for like.

How We Calculate Pharmacist Pay and Percentiles

Method
Pay-period conversion from your inputs. Percentile band and linear interpolation against BLS OEWS national percentile wages.
BLS data
OEWS national estimates, May 2025, for 29-1051 Pharmacists. Read on 2026-10-02 in the BLS OEWS Profiles tool. The figures are fixed constants on this page.
Inputs used
Pay type, base pay, hours per week, weeks per year, other annual pay and an optional second offer.
Assumptions
A BLS work year is 2,080 hours. Wages are spread evenly between two published percentiles. Monthly is annual / 12, biweekly is annual / 26 and weekly is annual / 52.
Rounding
Money to the cent. Approximate percentile to a whole number. Gap percent to one decimal.
Edge cases
Pay below the 10th or above the 90th percentile gets a band but no percentile number. Zero or negative pay, hours above 168 and weeks above 52 return an error.
Not included
Tax, cost of living, experience and specialty adjustments. No such multiplier is used.
