Decigram To Kilogram Converter

Quick answer

To convert decigrams to kilograms, divide the decigrams by 10,000, or move the decimal point 4 places left. The prefix deci means one tenth, so 1 dg is 0.1 g and 1 dg equals exactly 0.0001 kg (10^-4 kg). For example, 2,500 dg is 0.25 kg. To reverse it, multiply kilograms by 10,000.

How to Use the Decigram to Kilogram Converter

  1. Keep Decigrams to kilograms, or choose kg to dg to reverse, or dg to g for a quick gram value.
  2. Type the mass in decigrams. Whole numbers and decimals both work.
  3. Read the kilograms, then the grams, milligrams, ounces, grains and carats in the cards.
ResultWhat it means
ResultThe converted mass. The tool shifts the decimal point, so every digit you typed is kept.
Exact factor1 dg = 0.0001 kg. Prefix definitions make it exact.
Reverse direction1 kg = 10,000 dg.
Grams and milligrams1 dg = 0.1 g = 100 mg, the two units most small scales show.
Ounces and grainsUS customary checks. 1 dg is about 0.0035 oz or 1.54 grains.
Metric caratsA metric carat is 200 mg, so 1 dg is exactly half a carat.

What Is a Decigram?

A decigram (symbol dg) is a metric unit of mass equal to one tenth of a gram, which is 100 milligrams or 0.0001 kilogram. It joins the SI prefix deci, meaning 10^-1, to the gram.

Deci is one of the oldest metric prefixes. The NIST prefix history lists it among the eight original prefixes of 1795, with deca, hecto, kilo, centi and milli. Its symbol is a lowercase d, as for every prefix below one.

NIST Handbook 44 sets out the ladder: 10 centigrams make 1 decigram, which is 100 milligrams, and 10 decigrams make 1 gram. Ten thousand decigrams therefore make one kilogram.

The decigram is uncommon in daily life. You meet the size far more often than the name: a scale that reads to 0.1 g is resolving exactly 1 dg per step.

How Does Decigram to Kilogram Conversion Work?

You divide by 10,000, because a kilogram holds 1,000 g and each gram holds 10 dg, and 1,000 x 10 = 10,000.

Formula: kg = dg / 10,000 | reverse: dg = kg x 10,000 | grams: g = dg / 10
  1. Write the decigrams, for example 37.
  2. Move the decimal point 4 places to the left, adding zeros in front as needed: 37 becomes 0.0037.
  3. Label it kg. In powers of ten, deci is 10^-1 g and kilo is 10^3 g, so the gap is 10^4.

Small values pick up leading zeros fast. That is why the result card keeps full decimals and the scientific card shows the same value as a power of ten.

Decigram to Kilogram Worked Examples

A round amount. 2,500 dg / 10,000 = 0.25 kg, which is 250 g.

A small reading. 37 dg is 0.0037 kg, or 3.7 g. In US units that is about 0.1305 oz.

Reverse. 0.45 kg x 10,000 = 4,500 dg.

From a pocket scale. A scale shows 12.3 g. Every 0.1 g step is 1 dg, so that is 123 dg, or 0.0123 kg. For recipe checks, the grams to ounces converter handles the gram value directly.

Factors That Change Your Result

The factor of 10,000 never changes. These four points decide the figure you end up writing down.

Scale Resolution

A scale that reads to 0.1 g resolves 1 dg. One that reads to 1 g cannot tell 12 dg from 15 dg, so extra decimals would be invented.

Decigram or Dekagram

dg is the decigram, 0.1 g. dag is the dekagram, 10 g. Mixing them up is a factor of 100.

Leading Zeros

A small decigram value in kilograms has several zeros after the point. Dropping one gives a kilogram figure ten times too big.

Decimal Comma

In many European documents 2,5 dg means two and a half decigrams. This page uses a decimal point and commas for thousands.

Decigram vs Centigram vs Milligram Compared

The decigram is the largest of the three gram subunits that step down by tens: deci, centi and milli.

Centigramcg10^-5 kg0.1 dg
Decigramdg10^-4 kg1 dg

A metric carat sits between them: 200 mg, or 2 dg, per NIST Handbook 44. The carat to kilogram converter covers gem weights, and the metric converter handles any prefix pair.

When to Use a Decigram to Kilogram Converter

Metric Place-value Lessons

Decigrams fill the step between grams and centigrams on the metric ladder. Converting them to kilograms shows that four steps of ten make 10,000.

Reading Tenth-of-a-gram Scales

A scale that shows 0.1 g steps is counting in decigrams without saying so. Each step is one decigram, which helps when a form asks for kilograms.

Checking Textbook or Older Tables

Some science texts and older tables list dg. Converting to kg or g puts the value into the units most people use. The kg to grams converter takes a kilogram answer back to grams.

Decigram to Kilogram Conversion Chart

Each row is computed from 1 dg = 0.0001 kg = 0.1 g = 100 mg. Ounces use the avoirdupois ounce, 28.349523125 g exactly, rounded to 4 decimals.

Common Decigram Conversion Mistakes

1. Dividing by 1,000

That turns grams into kilograms, not decigrams. Decigrams need 10,000.

2. Reading Dg as Dag

A dekagram is 100 times heavier than a decigram. Check the symbol twice.

3. Moving the Decimal Point the Wrong Way

Kilograms are a bigger unit, so the number must get smaller. 50 dg is 0.005 kg, not 500,000 kg.

4. Confusing Dg with DL

dL is the deciliter, a volume. You cannot turn it into a mass without a density.

5. Mixing Carat and Karat

The metric carat is a mass of 200 mg. Karat describes gold purity and has nothing to do with mass.

Accuracy and Limitations

The conversion itself is exact. Your answer can only be as precise as the scale or table the number came from.

What it calculates accurately

  • Decigrams to kilograms and back with the exact 10,000 factor
  • Grams and milligrams from exact prefixes
  • Ounces, grains and metric carats from exact NIST definitions
  • Every digit you type, without floating point noise

What it does not account for

  • The resolution or calibration of your scale
  • Volume units such as mL or dL, which need a density
  • Medicine doses or lab tolerances
  • Troy ounces, which differ from avoirdupois ounces

How We Convert Decigrams to Kilograms

Method
kg = dg / 10,000 and dg = kg x 10,000, from deci = 10^-1 and kilo = 10^3. Grams: g = dg / 10.
Inputs used
The conversion mode and one mass value.
Assumptions
SI prefixes as listed by BIPM and NIST. Avoirdupois ounce = 28.349523125 g. Grain = 64.79891 mg. Metric carat = 200 mg.
Verdict band
Green for a normal exact conversion. Blue suggests milligrams under 1 dg or kilograms at 10,000 dg and above.
Rounding
Power-of-ten results keep every typed digit by shifting the decimal point. Ounces and grains to 6 significant figures. Carats exact.
Edge cases
Negative values are blocked. Zero returns zero. Empty input clears the results.

Frequently Asked Questions About Decigrams

How many decigrams are in 1 kilogram?

There are exactly 10,000 decigrams in 1 kilogram, because 1 kg is 1,000 g and each gram is 10 dg.

Is a decigram 0.1 gram?

Yes. One decigram is exactly 0.1 g, which is 100 mg.

What is 500 dg in kg?

Five hundred decigrams is 0.05 kg, or 50 g.

How many milligrams are in a decigram?

There are 100 milligrams in one decigram.

How many decigrams are in a pound?

One pound is 453.59237 g, so it holds 4,535.9237 dg.

How many grains are in a decigram?

One decigram is about 1.5432 grains, since a grain is 64.79891 mg.

Is a decigram the same as a dekagram?

No. A decigram is 0.1 g and a dekagram is 10 g, so the dekagram is 100 times heavier.

Why is the decigram so rarely used?

Most labels and recipes jump from milligrams to grams to kilograms. The decigram stays correct SI, but everyday practice skips it.

How do I write decigram correctly?

Use a lowercase dg with no period. A capital D is not an SI prefix symbol.

Is my data saved or sent anywhere?

No. The converter runs in your browser and nothing goes to our servers. Saved results stay in this browser only.
