To convert hectograms to kilograms, divide the number of hectograms by 10. The SI prefix hecto means 100, so 1 hg is 100 g and 1 hg equals exactly 0.1 kg. For example, 5 hg is 0.5 kg and 25 hg is 2.5 kg. To go back, multiply kilograms by 10.

How to Use the Hectogram to Kilogram Converter
- Keep the conversion on Hectograms to kilograms. Choose kg to hg to reverse it, or the crop yield mode for hg/ha data.
- Type the value. Whole numbers and decimals both work, for example 2.5 hg or 35,000 hg/ha.
- Read the kilograms at once. The cards add the factor, the reverse factor, grams, pounds and ounces, and the power of ten.
| Result | What it means |
|---|---|
| Result | Your mass in kilograms (or hectograms in reverse), shown to 12 significant figures. |
| Exact factor | 1 hg = 0.1 kg. This comes from the definition of the prefix, so it is exact. |
| Reverse direction | 1 kg = 10 hg, for going back. |
| Grams | The same mass in grams, since 1 hg = 100 g. In yield mode this card shows tonnes per hectare. |
| Pounds and ounces | A US customary check. In yield mode it shows grams per square meter. |
| Power of ten | The value written with 10^2 g, which shows how the hecto prefix works. |
What Is a Hectogram?
A hectogram (symbol hg) is a metric unit of mass equal to 100 grams, or one tenth of a kilogram. It is built from the gram and the SI prefix hecto, which means 10^2.
Hecto is one of the original metric prefixes. The NIST prefix history lists it among the eight adopted in 1795, next to deca, kilo and deci. It survives today in a few common units: the hectare for land area and the hectoliter for bulk liquids.
NIST Handbook 44 places the hectogram on the ladder of mass units: 10 dekagrams make 1 hectogram, and 10 hectograms make 1 kilogram. So the hectogram sits one step below the kilogram, the SI base unit of mass.
The symbol is a lowercase h followed by g, written hg with no space and no period. Hecto is one of only three multiple prefixes with a lowercase symbol. The other two are kilo (k) and deka (da). A capital H would be wrong, because H is the symbol for the henry, a unit of inductance.
How Does Hectogram to Kilogram Conversion Work?
You divide by 10, because a kilogram holds 1,000 g and a hectogram holds 100 g, and 1,000 / 100 = 10.
kg = hg / 10 | reverse: hg = kg x 10 | yield: kg/ha = hg/ha / 10- Write the hectograms as a number, for example 37.
- Move the decimal point one place to the left: 37 becomes 3.7. For a single digit such as 6, add a zero in front to get 0.6.
- Label it kg. The mass is unchanged. Only the unit got bigger, so the number got smaller.
The same one-place shift works for any rate that uses hectograms. A yield in hg per hectare becomes kg per hectare when you divide by 10, because the hectare part does not change.
Hectogram to Kilogram Worked Examples
Everyday mass. A bag of cherries weighs 12 hg. 12 / 10 = 1.2 kg, or 1,200 g. In US units that is about 2.6455 lb.
Small amount. A block of cheese is 2.5 hg. That is 0.25 kg, a quarter kilogram, or 250 g.
Reverse. A recipe calls for 0.75 kg of potatoes. 0.75 x 10 = 7.5 hg.
Crop yield. A farm data table lists wheat at 35,000 hg/ha. Divide by 10 to get 3,500 kg/ha, then by 1,000 to get 3.5 t/ha. That is 350 g of grain per square meter of field. The land area calculator helps you find the hectares of a plot first.
Factors That Change Your Result
The factor of 10 never changes, so four practical points decide the number you end up writing.
Which Unit Is in the Denominator
In hg/ha the hectograms are the mass and the hectare is the area. Only the mass converts. Dividing the hectares as well would be a double conversion and a wrong answer.
Decimal Comma
Many European tables write 2,5 hg for two and a half hectograms. This page uses a decimal point and commas for thousands, so read foreign tables carefully.
Rounding
One decimal place in kilograms keeps whole hectograms. Two decimals keep every 10 g. Pick the level your scale or data source supports.
Scale Resolution
A scale that reads to 0.1 kg cannot show part of a hectogram. Writing 1.23 kg from that scale claims precision the reading does not hold.
Hectogram vs Kilogram vs Gram Compared
The kilogram is the SI base unit, the gram is the everyday small unit, and the hectogram is a rarely used step between them.
| Unit | Symbol | Size | Power of ten (in grams) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gram | g | 0.001 kg | 10^0 g |
| Dekagram | dag | 10 g | 10^1 g |
| Hectogram | hg | 100 g = 0.1 kg | 10^2 g |
| Kilogram | kg | 1,000 g | 10^3 g |
| Megagram (tonne) | Mg or t | 1,000 kg | 10^6 g |
The megagram to kilogram converter covers the tonne, which yield tables use in t/ha. For any other prefix pair, the metric converter handles the whole ladder.
When to Use a Hectogram to Kilogram Converter
Reading FAO Crop Statistics
The FAO Statistics Division (FAOSTAT) has reported crop yields in hectograms per hectare. Its statistical yearbook metadata lists items such as cereals yield (hg/ha) and citrus fruit yield (hg/ha). Converting to kg/ha or t/ha makes those figures match most farm reports.
Metric Teaching
Hectograms fill the gap between grams and kilograms on a place-value chart. Students use them to see that each step on the metric ladder is a factor of 10.
Checking Older or Foreign Labels
Some older tables and some European sources still show hg. Converting to kg or g puts the figure into units a US or UK reader uses daily. The grams to ounces converter takes it one step further for US recipes.
Crop Yield Conversion Chart: Hg/ha to Kg/ha and T/ha
Each row is computed from 1 hg/ha = 0.1 kg/ha = 0.0001 t/ha. A hectare is 10,000 square meters, so 1 hg/ha is also 0.01 g per square meter.
| Yield (hg/ha) | kg/ha | t/ha | g per square meter |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10,000 hg/ha | 1,000 kg/ha | 1 t/ha | 100 g per square meter |
| 25,000 hg/ha | 2,500 kg/ha | 2.5 t/ha | 250 g per square meter |
| 35,000 hg/ha | 3,500 kg/ha | 3.5 t/ha | 350 g per square meter |
| 50,000 hg/ha | 5,000 kg/ha | 5 t/ha | 500 g per square meter |
| 80,000 hg/ha | 8,000 kg/ha | 8 t/ha | 800 g per square meter |
| 100,000 hg/ha | 10,000 kg/ha | 10 t/ha | 1,000 g per square meter |

Common Hectogram Conversion Mistakes
1. Dividing by 100 Instead of 10
Hecto means 100 grams, which tempts people to divide by 100. That gives kilograms ten times too small. The hg to kg step is 10.
2. Writing Hg or HG
The symbol is lowercase hg. Hg is the chemical symbol for mercury, which causes real confusion in lab notes.
3. Converting the Hectare Too
In hg/ha only the mass changes. The per hectare part stays as it is.
4. Mixing Up Hectogram and Hundredweight
A hundredweight is a customary unit of 100 lb in the US or 112 lb in the UK. A hectogram is only 100 g.
5. Reading a Decimal Comma as Thousands
In a European table, 1,5 hg means one and a half hectograms, not fifteen hundred.
Accuracy and Limitations
The conversion itself is exact, so the only error comes from the measured value or the rounding you choose.
What it calculates accurately
- Hectograms to kilograms and back, with the exact factor of 10
- Grams, pounds and ounces from exact SI and NIST factors
- Yield in hg/ha to kg/ha, t/ha and grams per square meter
- Very small and very large values without float noise
What it does not account for
- Moisture content or grading rules behind a crop yield
- Bushels per acre, which need a crop-specific test weight
- The accuracy of your scale or data source
- Volume units such as cups, which need a density
How We Convert Hectograms to Kilograms
Frequently Asked Questions About Hectograms
How many hectograms are in 1 kilogram?
There are exactly 10 hectograms in 1 kilogram. Each hectogram is 100 g, and 10 x 100 g = 1,000 g.
Is a hectogram 100 grams?
Yes. One hectogram is exactly 100 g, because the prefix hecto stands for 100.
What is 7 hg in kg?
Seven hectograms is 0.7 kg, or 700 g. Move the decimal point one place to the left.
How do I convert hg/ha to tonnes per hectare?
Divide the hg/ha figure by 10,000. A yield of 42,000 hg/ha is 4.2 t/ha, which is 4,200 kg/ha.
Where will I see yields in hg/ha?
You will see hg/ha mainly in FAOSTAT crop data and in reports built from it. Treat it as a reporting convention and divide by 10 to compare it with a kg/ha figure.
How many ounces are in a hectogram?
One hectogram is about 3.5274 avoirdupois ounces. That comes from 100 g divided by 28.349523125 g per ounce.
How many pounds is 1 hectogram?
One hectogram is about 0.2205 lb. It takes a little over 4.5 hectograms to make 1 lb.
Is hg the same as the mercury symbol?
No. The mass unit is lowercase hg. The element mercury is Hg with a capital H, so case matters.
What is 350 g in hectograms?
Three hundred fifty grams is 3.5 hg, because you divide grams by 100. The same mass is 0.35 kg.
Is my data saved or sent anywhere?
No. The converter runs in your browser and nothing is sent to our servers. Saved results stay in this browser only.
