YouTube Watch Time Hours Calculator

Quick answer

The YouTube watch time hours calculator shows your progress to the YouTube Partner Program threshold of 4,000 qualified watch hours in the last 12 months, with 1,000 subscribers. Progress equals your hours divided by 4,000, times 100. The tool also shows hours still needed, hours per day for your deadline, and the 3,000 hour earlier access tier.

How to Use the YouTube Watch Time Hours Calculator

The calculator needs one number to start: your qualified watch hours for the last 12 months. Each extra field adds a result.

  1. Pick your tier, then copy watch hours and subscribers from the Earn tab in YouTube Studio. Enter minutes when that is the figure you have.
  2. Add the number of days you want to reach the goal in.
  3. Add recent long-form views, average view duration and the period length to see your current pace.
ResultWhat it means
Watch hour progressYour hours as a percentage of 4,000, or of 3,000 for the earlier access tier.
Hours still neededThreshold minus your hours.

What Is YouTube Watch Time in Hours?

YouTube watch time hours are the total hours viewers spent watching a channel's videos. YouTube Help defines watch time (hours) as the amount of time viewers have watched your video. The YouTube Partner Program uses a narrower figure called qualified watch hours.

Qualified watch hours come from long-form videos set to public. YouTube Help, read on October 1, 2026, lists what does not count:

  • Private, unlisted and deleted videos.
  • Ad campaigns.
  • YouTube Shorts, including watch hours from the Shorts Feed.
  • Livestreams that are unlisted, deleted or not converted to video on demand.

The Published Thresholds

Ad revenue1,0004,000 qualified watch hours in 12 months10 million qualified Shorts views in 90 daysRevenue sharing from ads and Premium

The earlier access tier also needs 3 valid public uploads in the last 90 days, and it runs only in the countries YouTube lists.

How Does the Watch Time Hours Calculator Work?

Formula: Progress = qualified watch hours / threshold x 100
Hours per day needed = (threshold - watch hours) / days to goal
Recent pace = views x average view duration in seconds / 3,600 / period days
  1. The tool sets the threshold from your tier: 4,000 hours and 1,000 subscribers, or 3,000 hours and 500 subscribers.
  2. It converts minutes to hours by dividing by 60 when the hours field is blank.
  3. It subtracts your hours from the threshold and divides the gap by your deadline in days.
  4. It multiplies recent views by average view duration, divides by 3,600 for hours, then by the period for a daily pace.
  5. It divides the gap by that pace and rounds up to whole days.
  6. It compares Shorts views with the 90-day Shorts threshold as a separate route.

The Shorts route and the watch hour route do not add together. A channel qualifies through one or the other.

Watch Time Hours Example

Example values only. A channel has 2,460 qualified watch hours in the last 12 months and 780 subscribers. The owner wants to reach the ad revenue tier in 120 days. The last 28 days brought 6,000 long-form views at an average view duration of 210 seconds.

  • Progress = 2,460 / 4,000 x 100 = 61.5%.
  • Hours still needed = 4,000 - 2,460 = 1,540.
  • Hours per day needed = 1,540 / 120 = 12.83.
  • Recent pace = 6,000 x 210 / 3,600 = 350 hours in 28 days, or 12.50 hours per day.
  • Days to goal at that pace = 1,540 / 12.5 = 123.2, rounded up to 124 days.
  • Views per day needed = 12.83 x 3,600 / 210 = 220.
  • Subscribers: 780 of 1,000, so 220 to go.

The channel is 4 days behind its own deadline. Raising the pace from 12.50 to 12.83 hours per day closes the gap. The second preset shows the earlier access tier: 2,100 of 3,000 hours is 70.0%, and 900 hours over 90 days is 10.00 hours per day.

Factors That Change Your Watch Hour Count

The Rolling 12 Months

The threshold counts the last 12 months, so the window moves every day. Hours earned 13 months ago have dropped out. A channel whose old videos have slowed can see its total fall while it uploads.

Video Privacy

Setting a video to private or unlisted, or deleting it, removes its hours from the qualified total.

Shorts

Shorts watch hours from the Shorts Feed do not count towards the 4,000 hours. Shorts have their own route measured in views.

Live Streams

A livestream counts only when it stays public and is converted to video on demand.

Average View Duration

YouTube Help defines average view duration as the average minutes watched among those who stayed to watch. Longer average views raise hours without a single extra view, which the audience retention calculator explores.

Watch Hours Route vs Shorts Views Route

YouTube offers two ways to reach each tier. The subscriber requirement is the same on both routes.

PointWatch hours routeShorts views route
Ad revenue tier4,000 qualified watch hours10 million qualified Shorts views
Earlier access tier3,000 qualified watch hours3 million qualified Shorts views

Content that countsPublic long-form videosPublic Shorts shown in the Shorts Feed
Average per day to hold the level10.96 hours (4,000 / 365)About 111,111 views (10 million / 90)

The 3,000 hour tier works out to 8.22 hours per day across a year. To turn a minutes figure from an export into hours, the minutes to hours converter does the same division by 60.

When to Use a Watch Time Hours Calculator

Setting a Realistic Date

Enter a deadline and compare hours per day needed with your recent pace. The verdict states whether the pace covers the goal.

Planning Video Length

1,000 views at a 6 minute average view give 100 watch hours. The views-per-day result shows how many views your current average needs.

Choosing a Tier

Creators in listed countries can aim for 500 subscribers and 3,000 hours first. That tier unlocks fan funding, which the membership revenue calculator models.

Looking Past the Threshold

Ad revenue sharing starts at the 1,000 subscriber tier. Estimate it from your own figures with the AdSense revenue calculator.

Common Watch Time Mistakes

1. Counting Lifetime Hours

Only the last 12 months count. Lifetime watch time in analytics is a different number.

2. Adding Shorts Hours

Shorts Feed watch time is excluded from the 4,000 hours, however large it is.

3. Mixing Minutes and Hours

Analytics exports often show minutes. 198,000 minutes is 3,300 hours, which is 82.5% of the threshold with 700 hours to go.

4. Forgetting Subscribers

4,000 hours with 900 subscribers does not qualify. Both numbers are required.

5. Treating the Threshold as Acceptance

Every channel that meets a threshold goes through a review. YouTube says a decision typically takes about 1 month.

6. Buying Views or Watch Time

Ad campaign views do not count, and channels must follow the channel monetization policies.

Accuracy and Limitations

The thresholds match YouTube Help on the review date. The arithmetic is exact for the numbers you enter.

What it calculates accurately

  • Progress to the 4,000 or 3,000 hour threshold.
  • Hours still needed and hours per day for your deadline.
  • Recent pace from views and average view duration.
  • Subscriber gap and Shorts route progress.

What it does not account for

  • Old hours leaving the 12-month window before your deadline.
  • Future changes in views, video length or retention.
  • YouTube's review, policy checks and country availability.
  • The gap between views x duration and the qualified total in Studio.

The Earn tab in YouTube Studio is the figure YouTube uses. Treat views x average view duration as an estimate of pace, not as the official count.

How We Calculate Watch Time Hours

Method
Progress = hours / threshold x 100. Needed per day = (threshold - hours) / days. Pace = views x average view duration / 3,600 / period days.
Thresholds used
1,000 subscribers with 4,000 qualified watch hours in 12 months or 10 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days; 500 subscribers with 3,000 hours or 3 million Shorts views, plus 3 public uploads in 90 days.
Inputs used
Your own YouTube Studio figures. Presets are example values.
Verdict
Green when the tier is met or your pace covers your deadline; amber when the pace falls short; no invented risk factors.
Rounding
Hours to 1 decimal; per-day figures to 2 decimals; days rounded up.
Edge cases
Negative values are rejected; a zero pace gives no day count; minutes are used only when hours are blank.

Frequently Asked Questions About YouTube Watch Time Hours

How many watch hours do I need to monetize on YouTube?

You need 4,000 qualified watch hours in the last 12 months, plus 1,000 subscribers, for ad revenue sharing. The earlier access tier needs 3,000 hours and 500 subscribers.

How many minutes is 4,000 watch hours?

4,000 watch hours is 240,000 minutes. At an 8 minute average view duration, that equals 30,000 views.

Do YouTube Shorts count towards the 4,000 hours?

No. YouTube Help states that watch hours from Shorts views in the Shorts Feed do not count. Shorts have a separate route of 10 million qualified views in 90 days.

Do the 4,000 hours reset every year?

No. The count is a rolling window of the last 12 months, so it updates daily. Older hours drop out as new hours come in.

How many watch hours per day do I need?

A channel starting from zero needs 10.96 hours per day to reach 4,000 in 365 days. The calculator divides your own gap by your own deadline.

Do private or unlisted videos count as watch hours?

No. Only public long-form videos count. Private, unlisted and deleted videos are excluded, and so are ad campaigns.

Do live stream hours count?

Yes, when the stream stays public and is converted to video on demand. Unlisted or deleted livestreams do not count.

What happens after I reach the threshold?

You can apply in the Earn tab of YouTube Studio. YouTube reviews the channel against its monetization policies, typically in about 1 month.

What if my hours drop below 4,000 after I apply?

It does not matter for that application. YouTube Help says a channel that met the threshold and applied is still reviewed.

Where do I find my qualified watch hours?

Open YouTube Studio and select Earn in the left menu. The page shows subscribers and qualified watch hours against the thresholds.

Is my data saved?

No. The maths runs in your browser and nothing is sent to us. Save keeps a result only in this browser.
