How to Use the Radiation Therapist Salary Calculator

  1. Choose your pay type: annual salary or hourly rate. The tool uses one BLS wage table, radiation therapists (29-1124).
  2. Enter your base pay, your hours per week and your weeks per year. Add other annual pay or a second offer if you have them.
  3. Read your annual gross pay, the pay-period amounts and where your hourly pay sits in the BLS wage table.

What each result tells you:

ResultWhat it means
Annual gross payBase pay for the year plus any other annual pay you entered, before tax.
Monthly, biweekly, weeklyAnnual gross pay divided by 12, 26 and 52.
HourlyBase pay per paid hour. This is the number compared with BLS.
BLS percentile bandThe two published BLS percentiles your hourly pay falls between.
Approximate percentileA straight-line estimate between those two percentiles. BLS does not publish it.
Gap to BLS medianYour hourly pay minus the BLS median hourly wage, in dollars and percent.
Full-time equivalentYour hourly pay times 2,080 hours, the work year BLS uses for annual wages.
Second offer rowsThe second offer as annual and hourly pay, its percentile and the yearly difference.

The first preset is an example, not a typical wage. It shows a hospital radiation therapist on $104,000 a year for 40 hours a week. That is $50.00 an hour, about the 48th percentile.

What Is a Radiation Therapist Salary?

A radiation therapist salary is the gross pay a radiation therapist earns in a year, before tax and deductions. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports it under occupation code 29-1124.

BLS describes the work this way. Radiation therapists give doses of radiation to patients who have cancer or other serious diseases. They position patients, calibrate and operate machines such as linear accelerators, and keep treatment records. They work in oncology teams with radiation oncologists, medical physicists and medical dosimetrists.

Radiation therapy is a small occupation. The wage survey counts 17,070 jobs nationwide. Small counts make state and industry averages less stable than they are for large occupations.

A radiation therapist is not a radiologist or a radiologic technologist. A radiologist is a physician. A radiologic technologist performs diagnostic imaging examinations. Each has a separate BLS code and wage table.

The tool is for radiation therapists checking an offer or a raise. It is not a pay quote from any employer.

How Does the Radiation Therapist Salary Calculator Work?

The calculator converts your pay between time periods, then places your hourly pay in the BLS wage distribution for radiation therapists.

Formula: Annual pay = hourly rate x hours per week x weeks per year
Approximate percentile = P1 + (your hourly - W1) / (W2 - W1) x (P2 - P1)
  1. Convert. An hourly rate is multiplied by hours and weeks. A salary is divided by them to get pay per hour.
  2. Add other pay. Overtime, differentials and bonuses you typed are added to the annual total only.
  3. Find the band. Your base hourly pay is checked against the 10th, 25th, 50th, 75th and 90th percentile wages.
  4. Interpolate. W1 and W2 are the two BLS wages around your pay. P1 and P2 are their percentiles.
  5. Measure the gap. Your hourly pay minus the median, then divided by the median.

The table below holds the BLS figures the tool uses. They are fixed for the May 2025 release.

BLS annual wages equal the hourly wage times 2,080 hours. That is 40 hours for 52 weeks. The comparison uses hourly pay so that part-time and long-shift schedules are judged fairly.

Radiation Therapist Salary Example: Two Salary Offers

A radiation therapist earns $112,500 a year at a hospital cancer center. She works 40 hours a week for 52 weeks. An outpatient center offers $121,000 for the same hours.

Her current pay is above the national median of $50.63 an hour. The outpatient offer adds $8,500.00 a year and lands at about the 69th percentile. Both figures are gross pay. Benefits such as retirement match and paid leave are not in the comparison.

Factors That Change Radiation Therapist Pay

Industry

Industry changes the average wage. Outpatient care centers average $143,960, which is $28,970 above the national mean.

California also has the most jobs, 1,720. Florida has 1,280 and Texas has 1,000.

Education and Certification

Employers usually prefer an associate or bachelor degree, according to the Handbook. Most states require a licence or certification, which often means passing a national exam. BLS publishes no wage by degree or credential, so the tool applies no such multiplier.

Schedule

Most radiation therapists work full time on a regular schedule, because treatments are planned in advance. An hourly rate on fewer than 40 hours pays less a year than the BLS annual figure. The salary to hourly calculator gives a quick conversion without the BLS comparison.

Overtime and On-Call Pay

Overtime and bonuses raise annual pay. BLS leaves them out of its wage figures. The overtime pay calculator works out overtime from your own hours.

Radiation Therapist Pay by Employer: Outpatient Center vs Physician Office vs Hospital

Outpatient care centers pay radiation therapists the highest median wage, and hospitals pay the lowest of the three main employer groups. The BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook gives these figures for May 2025.

When to Use the Radiation Therapist Salary Calculator

Checking a Job Offer

Enter the offered salary and hours. The band shows whether the offer is in the lower or upper half of national pay for radiation therapists.

Comparing a Hospital with an Outpatient Center

Put your current salary in the pay field and the new salary in the second offer field. The tool shows both percentiles and the yearly difference.

Pricing a First Job

A new graduate offered $47.25 an hour for 40 hours earns $98,280.00 a year. That rate is about the 37th percentile.

Budgeting After Tax

The result is gross pay. Read the gross vs net income guide before you plan a household budget from it. The general salary calculator converts pay for any job.

Common Mistakes with Radiation Therapist Pay Comparisons

1. Using the Wrong Occupation

Radiologic technologists, radiologists and medical dosimetrists have their own BLS codes. Their wages do not describe radiation therapists. This page uses 29-1124 only.

2. Treating a State Mean as Precise

Only 17,070 jobs sit behind the national figures. A state with a few hundred jobs has a wider margin of error than the national estimate.

3. Treating the National Median as a Local Rate

The mean wage in California is $161,890. The national mean is $114,990. A national figure does not price a local market.

4. Mixing Bonus Pay into Salary

A sign-on bonus is a one-time, nonproduction bonus. BLS excludes it. Enter base salary alone, then add the bonus in the other annual pay field.

5. Reading the Percentile as Exact

BLS publishes five percentiles. The number between them is a straight-line estimate and can be off by several points.

Accuracy and Limitations

The conversion is exact arithmetic. The percentile is an estimate, because BLS publishes only five points of the wage distribution.

What it calculates accurately

  • Annual, monthly, biweekly, weekly and hourly gross pay from your own figures.
  • The BLS percentile band your hourly pay falls in.
  • The dollar and percent gap to the BLS national median.
  • The yearly difference between two offers on the same schedule.

What it does not account for

  • Federal, state and local tax, or any payroll deduction.
  • Your state, metro area, employer, experience or specialty.
  • Benefits such as health insurance, retirement match and paid leave.
  • Wages after May 2025. BLS updates the survey once a year.
  • Degree, credential or treatment technology. BLS publishes no wage by these.

BLS wages are straight-time gross pay. They exclude overtime pay, shift differentials and nonproduction bonuses. Keep those in the other annual pay field so the comparison stays like for like.

How We Calculate Radiation Therapist Pay and Percentiles

Method
Pay-period conversion from your inputs. Percentile band and linear interpolation against BLS OEWS national percentile wages.
BLS data
OEWS national estimates, May 2025, for 29-1124 Radiation Therapists. Read on 2026-10-02 in the BLS OEWS Profiles tool. The figures are fixed constants on this page.
Inputs used
Pay type, base pay, hours per week, weeks per year, other annual pay and an optional second offer.
Assumptions
A BLS work year is 2,080 hours. Wages are spread evenly between two published percentiles. Monthly is annual / 12, biweekly is annual / 26 and weekly is annual / 52.
Rounding
Money to the cent. Approximate percentile to a whole number. Gap percent to one decimal.
Edge cases
Pay below the 10th or above the 90th percentile gets a band but no percentile number. A percentile that BLS does not publish in dollars is shown as at or above the BLS reporting limit. Zero or negative pay, hours above 168 and weeks above 52 return an error.
Not included
Tax, cost of living, experience and specialty adjustments. No such multiplier is used.
