Oncologist Salary Calculator

Quick answer

An oncologist salary calculator turns base salary, production incentive, call pay and bonuses into yearly gross pay. BLS publishes no wage for oncologists alone. It counts them in the group physicians, all other, whose median wage was $127.85 an hour, or $265,930 a year, in May 2025.

How to Use the Oncologist Salary Calculator

  1. Choose annual salary or hourly rate, then enter your base pay. Keep 40 hours and 52 weeks to compare a salary with the BLS annual wage.
  2. Add your own production incentive, call pay and other bonus figures from your contract. Leave any of them blank.
  3. Read your annual gross pay, the pay-period amounts and where your rate sits in the BLS wage table for the BLS group physicians, all other.

What each result tells you:

ResultWhat it means
Annual gross payBase pay for the year plus every extra you entered, before tax.
Monthly, biweekly, weeklyAnnual gross pay divided by 12, 26 and 52.
Hourly wage as BLS counts itBase salary plus production incentive, divided by regular hours and weeks. This is the number compared with BLS.
Extra pay per yearCall pay and other annual bonuses added together. It is in the annual total but not in the comparison.
BLS percentile bandThe two published BLS percentiles for the BLS group physicians, all other that your rate falls between.
Approximate percentileA straight-line estimate between those two percentiles. BLS does not publish it.
Gap to BLS medianYour rate minus the BLS median hourly wage for the BLS group physicians, all other, in dollars and percent.
Full-time equivalentYour compared rate times 2,080 hours, the work year BLS uses for annual wages.
Second offer rowsThe second offer as annual and hourly base pay, its percentile and the yearly difference.

The first preset is an example, not a typical salary. It shows an oncologist paid $400,000 a year. That is $192.31 an hour over 2,080 hours, about the 79th percentile for the BLS group physicians, all other. BLS publishes no oncologist-only wage figure.

What Is an Oncologist Salary?

An oncologist salary is the gross pay a cancer physician earns in a year, before tax. A contract can have several parts: a base salary, a production incentive, call pay and one-time bonuses. This tool adds the parts you enter.

BLS does not survey oncologists as a separate occupation. Its classification puts them in code 29-1229, physicians, all other. That code holds all physicians not listed separately. BLS names three examples: gastroenterologist, oncologist and pulmonologist. So the wage table on this page mixes many specialties.

Board certification in medical oncology comes from the American Board of Internal Medicine. The board requires prior certification in internal medicine, accredited fellowship training and a pass in its medical oncology examination. The handbook notes that board certification is not required to practise, but it may improve job prospects.

How Does the Oncologist Salary Calculator Work?

The calculator turns your pay into a yearly total, then places your straight-time rate in the BLS wage distribution for the BLS group physicians, all other.

Formula: Annual gross pay = base pay + production incentive + call pay + other bonus
Approximate percentile = P1 + (your rate - W1) / (W2 - W1) x (P2 - P1)
  1. Convert. An hourly rate is multiplied by regular hours and weeks. A salary is divided by them to get pay per hour.
  2. Add the production incentive. Incentive units x pay per unit. BLS counts production bonuses as wages, so this amount joins the comparison.
  3. Add call pay. Paid call shifts x pay per shift. The tool treats it as premium pay and leaves it out of the comparison.
  4. Add other bonuses. Sign-on, retention and quality bonuses are nonproduction bonuses. BLS excludes them.
  5. Find the band. Base pay plus production incentive, per hour, is checked against the 10th, 25th, 50th, 75th and 90th percentile wages.
  6. Interpolate. W1 and W2 are the two BLS wages around your rate. P1 and P2 are their percentiles.
  7. Measure the gap. Your rate minus the median, then divided by the median.

The table below is the BLS wage table the tool uses. It covers every physician in the all-other group, not oncologists alone.

Source: BLS OEWS, national estimates, May 2025. Read on 2026-10-02. This table covers the whole occupation group. BLS publishes no separate wage figure for oncologists.

BLS annual wages equal the hourly wage times 2,080 hours. That is 40 hours for 52 weeks. The comparison uses hourly pay so that part-time and long-shift schedules are judged fairly.

Oncologist Pay Example: Salary, Incentive and Call

An oncologist has a base salary of $350,000. Her contract pays $50 for each work unit above a threshold, and she expects 1,500 paid units. She takes 40 call shifts at $1,000 each and has a $20,000 retention bonus. These are example figures, not typical terms. A second employer offers a flat $400,000.

Second offer400,000 / 2,080$192.31 an hour, about the 79th

Her package totals $485,000.00. The flat offer is $50,000.00 above her base salary but $85,000.00 below her full package. Without the incentive her base alone sits at about the 69th percentile of the group. Both percentiles rank her among all physicians in the all-other group, not among oncologists.

Factors That Change Oncologist Pay

How Much of the Package Is Incentive

A production incentive pays a set amount per unit of work. It moves with patient volume. At $50 a unit, 500 more paid units add $25,000 a year. Enter the units you expect, not the best case.

Call Pay

The handbook says many physicians work long shifts, with irregular and overnight hours or time on call. Some contracts pay a stipend per call shift and some pay nothing extra. The tool multiplies your shifts by your stipend.

Hours Behind the Salary

BLS annual wages equal the hourly wage times 2,080 hours. A $400,000 salary is $192.31 an hour at 40 hours a week. At 55 hours a week it is $139.86. Keep 40 hours to compare a salary with the BLS annual figures. Enter real hours to see your pay per hour worked. The salary to hourly calculator does that conversion alone.

A Mixed Group with a Wide Range

The 25th percentile for this group is $49.48 an hour and the median is $127.85. That gap of $78.37 an hour is wide. The straight-line percentile is weakest inside it.

Employee or Contractor

BLS surveys employees only. It leaves out the self-employed and partners in unincorporated firms. A physician paid as an independent contractor also owes self-employment tax. The self-employment tax calculator estimates that tax.

Oncologist Pay Compared with Other Physician Groups

BLS data can compare the all-other physician group with physicians as a whole, but not oncologists with other specialties. The median for the all-other group is $265,930. The Occupational Outlook Handbook gives $275,930 for all physicians and surgeons in May 2025.

Base Salary vs Total Package

Two offers with the same base can differ by tens of thousands of dollars once incentive and call pay are added. Compare the annual gross pay line for each offer, not only the base.

When to Use the Oncologist Salary Calculator

Reading a First Contract After Fellowship

Enter the base salary, then the incentive and call terms. The result shows the full package and how much of it is guaranteed.

Comparing a Flat Offer with an Incentive Offer

Put the incentive offer in the main fields and the flat salary in the second offer field. Read the yearly difference against your extras.

Testing a Lower Volume Year

Cut the incentive units by a quarter and read the new total. The base salary row does not move, so you see the downside clearly.

Planning Cash Flow

The result is gross pay before tax. The gross vs net income guide explains the difference. The salary calculator converts a single pay figure without the BLS table.

Common Mistakes with Oncologist Pay Comparisons

1. Reading the BLS Figure as an Oncologist Salary

The median of $265,930 covers 342,720 physicians in many specialties. BLS does not split out oncologists.

2. Putting a Sign-On Bonus into Base Pay

A one-time bonus is not part of the wage. Enter it as other annual bonus so the percentile stays honest.

3. Counting the Best-Case Incentive

An incentive is paid on units above a threshold. Enter only the units you expect to be paid for.

4. Changing Hours and Then Reading the Annual Table

The BLS annual wage assumes 2,080 hours. With 55 hours entered, compare the hourly row instead.

5. Trusting Survey Figures the Tool Cannot Show

The old tool on this page quoted subspecialty medians from a paid industry survey and multiplied them by fixed factors. Those figures cannot be checked here, so this page uses none of them.

Accuracy and Limitations

The conversion is exact arithmetic. The percentile is an estimate, because BLS publishes only five points of the wage distribution and the table covers a broader group than oncologists.

What it calculates accurately

  • Annual, monthly, biweekly, weekly and hourly gross pay from your own figures.
  • The BLS percentile band your straight-time rate falls in, for the BLS group physicians, all other.
  • The dollar and percent gap to the BLS national median for that group.
  • Production incentive, call pay and bonus totals for the year, from your own contract figures.

What it does not account for

  • Federal, state and local tax, or any payroll deduction.
  • Your state, metro area, employer or years of experience.
  • Benefits such as health insurance, retirement match and paid leave.
  • A wage figure for oncologists alone. BLS does not publish one.
  • Wages after May 2025. BLS updates the survey once a year.
  • Partnership income, practice overhead, malpractice cover and loan repayment.
  • Your oncology subspecialty. No official wage series separates them.

BLS wages are straight-time gross pay. They exclude overtime pay, shift differentials and nonproduction bonuses. They include incentive pay and production bonuses. This tool follows that split: production incentive is compared, call pay and other bonuses are not.

How We Calculate Oncologist Pay and Percentiles

Method
Pay-period conversion from your inputs. Percentile band and linear interpolation against BLS OEWS national percentile wages for the broader occupation.
BLS data
OEWS national estimates, May 2025, for 29-1229 Physicians, All Other. Read on 2026-10-02 in the BLS OEWS Profiles tool. The figures are fixed constants on this page. BLS has no code for oncologists. Its 2018 classification defines 29-1229 as all physicians not listed separately and names an oncologist as an example. A gynecological oncologist is an example under 29-1218, obstetricians and gynecologists.
Inputs used
Pay type, base pay, regular hours, weeks, incentive units and pay per unit, paid call shifts and pay per shift, other annual bonus, and an optional second offer.
Assumptions
A BLS work year is 2,080 hours. Wages are spread evenly between two published percentiles. Monthly is annual / 12, biweekly is annual / 26 and weekly is annual / 52. Call pay is treated as premium pay.
Rounding
Money to the cent. Approximate percentile to a whole number. Percent gaps to one decimal.
Edge cases
A rate below the 10th or above the 90th percentile gets a band but no percentile number. Zero or negative pay, hours above 168 and weeks above 52 return an error.
Not included
Tax, cost of living, experience and specialty adjustments. No such multiplier is used.

Frequently Asked Questions About Oncologist Salaries

How much do oncologists make?

BLS does not publish a wage for oncologists alone. It counts them in the group physicians, all other. That group had a median wage of $265,930 a year, or $127.85 an hour, in May 2025.

Why does BLS have no oncologist salary?

BLS surveys pay by occupation code, and oncologists have no code of their own. The 2018 classification lists an oncologist as an example of code 29-1229, which holds all physicians not listed separately.

What do the highest paid physicians in this group earn?

Physicians at the 90th percentile of the all-other group earned $452,360 a year in May 2025. Those at the 75th percentile earned $378,770. The mean was $262,040.

Does the BLS wage include production bonuses?

Yes. BLS counts incentive pay and production bonuses as wages. It excludes nonproduction bonuses, overtime pay and shift differentials. This tool compares base salary plus production incentive for that reason.

Is call pay part of the BLS comparison here?

No. This tool treats call pay as premium pay and keeps it out of the percentile. It still adds your call pay to annual gross pay.

How do I convert an oncologist salary to an hourly rate?

Divide the salary by paid hours in the year. A $400,000 salary over 2,080 hours is $192.31 an hour. Over 55 hours a week for 52 weeks it is $139.86.

Where are gynecologic oncologists counted?

BLS lists a gynecological oncologist as an example under code 29-1218, obstetricians and gynecologists. That is a different wage table from the one on this page.

How long does it take to become an oncologist?

BLS says physicians need a bachelor degree, a 4-year medical degree and 3 to 9 years of residency. A subspecialty adds a fellowship of 1 to 3 years.

Which industry employs the most physicians in this group?

Offices of physicians employ 150,920 of the 342,720 physicians in the all-other group. General medical and surgical hospitals employ 107,730.

Is my pay information saved?

No. The calculation runs in your browser. Nothing is sent to a server. The Save button stores a result only on your own device.
