How to Use the Neurologist Salary Calculator

  1. Choose annual salary or hourly rate, whichever your neurology contract states.
  2. Enter your base pay, your hours per week and your weeks per year. Add other annual pay or a second offer if you have them.
  3. Read your annual gross pay, the pay-period amounts and where your hourly pay sits in the BLS wage table.

What each result tells you:

ResultWhat it means
Annual gross payBase pay for the year plus any other annual pay you entered, before tax.
Monthly, biweekly, weeklyAnnual gross pay divided by 12, 26 and 52.
HourlyBase pay per paid hour. This is the number compared with BLS.
BLS percentile bandThe two published BLS percentiles your hourly pay falls between.
Approximate percentile, hourlyA straight-line estimate between those two percentiles. BLS does not publish it. The verdict band uses this number.
Approximate percentile, annualThe same estimate for your base annual pay against BLS annual wages, which assume 2,080 hours.
Gap to BLS medianYour hourly pay minus the BLS median hourly wage, in dollars and percent.
Full-time equivalentYour hourly pay times 2,080 hours, the work year BLS uses for annual wages.
Second offer rowsThe second offer as annual and hourly pay, its percentile and the yearly difference.

The first preset is an example, not a typical wage. It shows a neurologist paid $260,000 for 45 hours a week and 48 weeks. That is $120.37 an hour, about the 50th percentile by hourly pay and about the 53rd by annual pay.

What Is the Neurologist Salary Calculator?

The neurologist salary calculator is a gross pay converter tied to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) wage table for neurologists, occupation code 29-1217. It restates your pay per year, month, pay period, week and hour, then ranks it among employed neurologists nationwide.

Neurologists diagnose, manage and treat disorders and diseases of the brain, spinal cord and peripheral nerves, with a primarily nonsurgical focus. Examples include Alzheimer disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and epilepsy. Some work as pediatric neurologists.

The nonsurgical focus matters for pay data. Neurosurgeons are surgeons, and BLS counts surgeons in separate tables. A neurosurgeon who uses this table compares against the wrong occupation.

Neurology is one of the smallest physician occupations BLS lists, with 10,590 employee jobs. Unlike most physician tables, the mean of $267,630 is above the median of $248,560. A stretch of high wages pulls the average up: the 75th percentile is $357,990 and the 90th is $450,780.

BLS publishes one table for the specialty. It gives no separate wage for stroke, epilepsy, movement disorder or headache practice, so this page has no subspecialty selector.

How Does the Neurologist Salary Calculator Work?

The calculator converts your pay between time periods, then places your hourly pay in the BLS wage distribution for neurologists.

Formula: Annual pay = hourly rate x hours per week x weeks per year
Approximate percentile = P1 + (your hourly - W1) / (W2 - W1) x (P2 - P1)
  1. Convert. An hourly rate is multiplied by hours and weeks. A salary is divided by them to get pay per hour.
  2. Add other pay. Call pay, year-end bonuses and profit sharing you typed are added to the annual total only.
  3. Find the band. Your base hourly pay is checked against the 10th, 25th, 50th, 75th and 90th percentile wages. Your base annual pay is checked against the annual wages in the same way.
  4. Interpolate. W1 and W2 are the two BLS wages around your pay. P1 and P2 are their percentiles.
  5. Measure the gap. Your hourly pay minus the median, then divided by the median.

The table below is the full BLS wage table for neurologists. It is the only table this page uses.

BLS annual wages equal the hourly wage times 2,080 hours. That is 40 hours for 52 weeks. The verdict uses hourly pay so that part-time and long-week schedules are judged fairly. The annual percentile is shown beside it. The two match only on a 2,080-hour year.

Neurologist Salary Example: Academic Post vs Private Offer

A neurologist at a university hospital earns a $215,000 base salary. Clinic, inpatient consults and teaching average 45 hours a week over 48 worked weeks. Call pay adds $12,000 a year. A private group offers $260,000 for the same hours.

Second offer260,000 / 2,160$120.37 an hour, +$45,000.00 a year

The current salary is $33,560 below the annual median. The hourly rate of $99.54 sits at about the 39th percentile. The private offer lifts hourly pay to $120.37, about the 50th percentile, and adds $45,000 a year before tax. It is still just above the hourly median of $119.50, because the year holds 2,160 hours.

Hours and Call

BLS wages are straight-time pay and exclude on-call pay. The Occupational Outlook Handbook notes that many physicians work irregular hours or call. Call pay raises annual cash but not the wage BLS measures. Enter call pay in the other annual pay field. The salary to hourly calculator converts any salary and schedule.

Employee or Owner

The survey covers employees. Self-employed neurologists and partners of unincorporated practices are left out. The Occupational Outlook Handbook counts 11,400 neurologist jobs in 2025 with the self-employed included, against 10,590 employee jobs in the wage table.

Sample Size

Neurology has the largest wage error of the occupations on our physician pages. The mean wage has a 6.6 percent relative standard error and employment 9.9 percent. The offices of physicians mean carries an 11.8 percent error. Read small differences with caution.

Neurologist Pay vs Other Physicians

Neurologists rank 15th by median among the 17 physician and surgeon occupations BLS lists. Only family medicine physicians and general pediatricians have a lower median.

Medians and job counts: BLS OEWS, May 2025. The all physicians and surgeons median is from the Occupational Outlook Handbook. Read on 2026-10-02.

The neurologist median is $27,370 below the median for all physicians and surgeons. The mean tells a different story. At $267,630, the neurologist mean is above the family medicine mean of $255,820 and close to the general internal medicine mean of $267,200.

Employment is projected to grow faster than for physicians overall. BLS projects neurologist employment to grow 6 percent from 2025 to 2035, against 4 percent for all physicians and surgeons.

When to Use This Calculator

Comparing an Academic and a Private Offer

Enter one as base pay and the other as the second offer. Both are ranked against the same BLS table.

Converting an Hourly or Locum Rate

At $140.00 an hour for 36 hours and 46 weeks, annual pay is $231,840.00. The hourly rate is about the 60th percentile, while the annual figure is about the 45th.

Pricing a Call Change

Keep the salary and change the weekly hours. The hourly percentile shows what added call does to the rate per hour.

Planning After Fellowship

Set the monthly gross figure against a loan payment from the student loan payoff calculator. The result is before tax, so read the gross vs net income guide before you budget.

Common Mistakes with Neurologist Pay Data

1. Using Neurosurgeon Figures

Neurosurgeons are not in code 29-1217. BLS describes neurologists as primarily nonsurgical and counts surgeons separately.

2. Quoting the Mean as Typical Pay

The mean, $267,630, is $19,070 above the median. Half of employed neurologists earn less than $248,560.

3. Expecting a Subspecialty Wage from BLS

BLS has one neurologist table. It publishes no stroke, epilepsy or neurocritical care wage, and this page adds none.

4. Adding Call Pay to Base Pay

BLS excludes on-call pay. Folding it into base pay overstates your percentile.

5. Over-Reading a Small Gap

With a 6.6 percent error on the mean wage, a gap of a few thousand dollars to the median is not meaningful.

6. Comparing a 2,160-Hour Salary with a 2,080-Hour Table

BLS annual wages assume 2,080 hours. The verdict uses hourly pay so that long weeks are judged fairly.

Accuracy and Limitations

The conversion is exact arithmetic. The percentile is an estimate, because BLS publishes only five points of the wage distribution.

What it calculates accurately

  • Annual, monthly, biweekly, weekly and hourly gross pay from your own figures.
  • The BLS percentile band your hourly pay falls in.
  • The dollar and percent gap to the BLS national median.
  • The yearly difference between two offers on the same schedule.

What it does not account for

  • Federal, state and local tax, or any payroll deduction.
  • Your state, metro area, employer, experience or subspecialty.
  • Self-employed physicians and owners or partners of unincorporated practices. The BLS survey covers employees only.
  • Benefits such as health insurance, retirement match and paid leave.
  • Wages after May 2025. BLS updates the survey once a year.
  • Subspecialty pay, such as stroke or epilepsy practice. BLS publishes one table for all neurologists.
  • Sampling error. The neurologist mean wage has a 6.6 percent relative standard error.

BLS wages are straight-time gross pay. They include production bonuses and incentive pay. They exclude overtime pay, on-call pay, shift differentials, profit sharing and year-end bonuses. Keep the excluded items in the other annual pay field so the comparison stays like for like.

How We Calculate Neurologist Pay and Percentiles

Method
Pay-period conversion from your inputs. Percentile band and linear interpolation against BLS OEWS national percentile wages.
BLS data
OEWS national estimates, May 2025, for 29-1217 Neurologists. Read on 2026-10-02 in the BLS OEWS Profiles tool. The figures are fixed constants on this page.
Inputs used
Pay type, base pay, hours per week, weeks per year, other annual pay and an optional second offer.
Assumptions
A BLS work year is 2,080 hours. Wages are spread evenly between two published percentiles. Monthly is annual / 12, biweekly is annual / 26 and weekly is annual / 52.
Rounding
Money to the cent. Approximate percentile to a whole number. Gap percent to one decimal.
Edge cases
Pay below the 10th or above the 90th percentile gets a band but no percentile number. A percentile that BLS shows only as at or above its reporting limit stays a limit and is never filled in. Zero or negative pay, hours above 168 and weeks above 52 return an error.
Not included
Tax, cost of living, experience, subspecialty and practice-setting adjustments. No such multiplier is used. No private salary survey is used.
