How to Use the ICU Nurse Salary Calculator

  1. Choose hourly or annual pay. Enter your base pay, your regular hours per week and your weeks per year.
  2. Add your night or weekend differential and the share of hours it covers. Then add certification pay and overtime hours if you have them.
  3. Read your total annual gross pay, the breakdown table and where your base rate sits among all registered nurses.

What each result tells you:

ResultWhat it means
Total annual gross payBase pay plus every extra pay component you entered, before tax.
Base annual payStraight-time pay for your regular hours. No differentials, call pay or overtime.
Extra pay a yearThe sum of the extra components. The breakdown table lists each one.
Shift differential rowDifferential dollars times the share of regular hours that earn it.
Certification or charge pay rowExtra dollars per hour times all regular hours.
Overtime rowOvertime hours times the overtime rate. That rate is base plus certification pay plus the average differential, times your multiplier.
Monthly, biweekly, weeklyTotal annual gross pay divided by 12, 26 and 52.
Base hourly rateBase pay per regular hour. Only this number is compared with BLS.
BLS band and approximate percentileWhere your base rate falls among all registered nurses. It is not a ranking among ICU nurses.
Gap to RN medianYour base rate minus the BLS median hourly wage for all registered nurses.
Extra pay shareExtra pay as a percent of total pay.
Second offer rowsThe second offer as annual and hourly base pay, its percentile and the yearly difference.

The first preset is an example, not a typical ICU wage. It shows $48.00 an hour for 36 hours a week, a $5.00 night differential on every hour and $1.50 of certification pay. That totals $102,024.00 a year. The $48.00 base rate sits near the 54th percentile for all registered nurses.

What Is an ICU Nurse Salary?

An ICU nurse salary is the gross pay a registered nurse earns in a year for work in an intensive care unit. It has two parts: straight-time base pay and extra pay for nights, weekends, certification and overtime.

BLS describes the role this way: critical care nurses work in intensive-care units in hospitals. They care for patients with serious, complex and acute illnesses and injuries that need close monitoring and treatment.

BLS publishes no wage figure for ICU nurses. Its handbook lists critical care nurses as one kind of registered nurse. Every BLS number on this page therefore covers all 3,379,720 registered nurse jobs in code 29-1141.

Night or weekend differentialYour unit pay policyNo. BLS excludes shift differentials.
Certification or charge payYour pay policy, per hourKept out of the comparison here
OvertimeYour time recordsNo. BLS excludes overtime pay.

Hospitals employ 59% of registered nurses, and hospital nurses work shifts that cover all 24 hours. BLS notes that they work nights, weekends and holidays. Pay for those hours is why this calculator has differential and overtime fields.

This tool is for ICU nurses checking an offer, a shift change or a raise. It is not a pay quote from any hospital. For LPN and nurse practitioner tables, use the nurse salary calculator.

How Does the ICU Nurse Salary Calculator Work?

The calculator builds annual pay from your own pay components. It then places your base hourly rate in the BLS wage distribution for all registered nurses.

Formula: Total gross pay = base pay + extra pay
Base pay = hourly rate x regular hours per week x weeks per year
Differential pay = differential x share of hours x regular hours
Certification pay = dollars per hour x regular hours
Overtime pay = overtime hours x (base + certification pay + average differential) x multiplier x weeks
Approximate percentile = P1 + (base rate - W1) / (W2 - W1) x (P2 - P1)
  1. Convert. An hourly rate is multiplied by regular hours and weeks. A salary is divided by them to get the base rate.
  2. Add each extra. Every component uses only the numbers you typed. A blank field counts as zero.
  3. Find the band. The base rate is checked against the 10th, 25th, 50th, 75th and 90th percentile wages for registered nurses.
  4. Interpolate. W1 and W2 are the two BLS wages around your rate. P1 and P2 are their percentiles.

The differential share matters for rotating schedules. A nurse who works half her shifts at night enters 50. The tool then pays the differential on half of the regular hours.

BLS annual wages equal the hourly wage times 2,080 hours. BLS wages are straight-time pay. They exclude overtime pay and shift differentials, so the tool keeps those out of the comparison.

ICU Nurse Salary Example: Night Shift with Certification Pay

An ICU nurse earns a base rate of $49.50 an hour. He works three 12-hour night shifts, so 36 hours a week for 52 weeks. His hospital pays a $5.50 night differential and $1.25 an hour for his certification. He averages 3 overtime hours a week at 1.5 times. Another hospital offers a base rate of $53.00. These figures are an example, not survey data.

Second offer53 x 36 x 52$99,216.00, +$6,552.00 a year

His extra pay adds $25,799.28 to a base of $92,664.00. His base rate is $2.60 an hour above the registered nurse median. The second offer lifts base pay by $6,552.00 a year, to about the 71st percentile. He still needs that hospital differential rate before he compares totals.

Factors That Change ICU Nurse Pay

Share of Night and Weekend Hours

The differential share changes total pay without changing the base rate. In the example above, nights on every shift pay $10,296.00 a year in differential. A rotation with half the shifts at night pays $5,148.00. A straight day schedule pays none, which cuts total pay to $106,880.28.

How Your Hospital Counts Overtime

Overtime rules decide how many hours earn the higher rate. The U.S. Department of Labor describes two systems for hospitals. The standard system pays overtime after 40 hours in a workweek. The 8 and 80 system pays it after 8 hours in a day or 80 hours in a 14-day period, by prior agreement with staff. Enter the overtime hours your own system produces.

The Overtime Rate Itself

The Department of Labor states that the regular rate includes shift differentials. The tool follows that rule. It multiplies base rate plus certification pay plus the average differential by your multiplier. The overtime pay calculator handles a single week in more detail.

Hours per Week

A 36-hour week pays 10% less a year than a 40-hour week at the same rate. At the registered nurse median of $46.90, 36 hours pays $87,796.80 and 40 hours pays $97,552.00.

Employer Type

BLS reports medians for all registered nurses by industry group. Hospitals pay a median of $100,220, which is $2,670 above the overall median.

Industry groupMedian annual wage, all registered nursesVersus overall median
Government, excluding state and local education and hospitals$110,780+$13,230

ICU Nurse Pay vs All Registered Nurses: What BLS Shows

BLS shows one wage distribution for all registered nurses and none for ICU nurses. No official figure states how much more or less an ICU nurse earns than a nurse on another unit.

The useful comparison is your own base rate against that distribution. The table converts each BLS hourly percentile to a year of three 12-hour shifts and a year of 40-hour weeks.

All registered nursesHourly wage36 hours a week (1,872 hours)40 hours a week (2,080 hours)
10th percentile$33.14$62,038.08$68,931.20
25th percentile$38.62$72,296.64$80,329.60
50th percentile$46.90$87,796.80$97,552.00
75th percentile$54.02$101,125.44$112,361.60
90th percentile$66.09$123,720.48$137,467.20

Hourly wages are BLS figures for May 2025. The two annual columns are this page multiplying them by 1,872 and 2,080 hours. They are straight-time pay with no differential.

This page uses no third-party salary survey. Every wage figure comes from BLS, and every extra comes from you.

When to Use the ICU Nurse Salary Calculator

Checking an ICU Job Offer

Enter the offered base rate, the unit schedule and the posted differential. The total shows what the offer pays in a year. The band shows how the base rate ranks among all registered nurses.

Pricing a Move from Nights to Days

Set the differential share to 0 and note the drop in total pay. In the worked example the move costs $11,583.00 a year, including the lower overtime rate.

Weighing a Critical Care Certification

The CCRN (Adult) exam costs $260 for members of the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses and $375 for nonmembers. Enter the certification pay your hospital offers. At $1.25 an hour, 300 paid hours repay the nonmember fee. Not every employer pays for certification, so check your policy first.

Budgeting from the Result

The result is gross pay. Read the gross vs net income guide before you plan a household budget from it. The salary to hourly calculator converts a salary without the BLS comparison.

Common Mistakes with ICU Pay Comparisons

1. Quoting the Night Rate as the Base Rate

A night nurse paid $48.00 plus $5.00 does not have a $53.00 wage in BLS terms. BLS excludes shift differentials. Enter $48.00 as base pay and $5.00 as the differential.

2. Reading the Percentile as an ICU Ranking

The percentile ranks your base rate among all registered nurses. It includes school nurses, clinic nurses and every hospital unit. It says nothing about other ICU nurses.

3. Paying the Differential on Every Hour of a Rotating Schedule

A nurse who rotates days and nights earns the differential on night hours only. Enter the real share. A 100 in that field overstates pay for a rotating schedule.

4. Comparing a 36-Hour Year with the BLS Annual Wage

BLS annual wages assume 2,080 hours. A nurse on 1,872 hours looks underpaid against them. The tool compares hourly rates for that reason.

5. Counting Weekly Overtime for All 52 Weeks

Overtime varies from week to week. Enter your average over a full year, including weeks with none. Four overtime hours every week is 208 hours a year.

Accuracy and Limitations

The pay arithmetic is exact for the numbers you enter. The percentile is an estimate, and it describes all registered nurses.

What it calculates accurately

  • Base, extra and total annual gross pay from your own figures.
  • Monthly, biweekly and weekly gross amounts.
  • The BLS percentile band for your base rate among all registered nurses.
  • The yearly base-pay difference between two offers on the same schedule.
  • Differential, certification and overtime pay for the hours you enter.

What it does not account for

  • Any pay difference between ICU nurses and other registered nurses. BLS does not measure it.
  • Federal, state and local tax, or any payroll deduction.
  • Your state, metro area, employer, union contract or experience.
  • Benefits such as health insurance, retirement match and paid leave.
  • Wages after May 2025. BLS updates the survey once a year.
  • Daily overtime under an 8 and 80 agreement. Enter the resulting weekly average yourself.
  • Travel contract stipends, which are not wages in BLS data.

Your pay stub is the final check. Payroll rules for overtime and call pay differ by employer and by state.

How We Calculate ICU Nurse Pay and the RN Percentile

Method
Annual pay built from user-entered pay components. Percentile band and linear interpolation against BLS OEWS national percentile wages.
BLS data
OEWS national estimates, May 2025, for 29-1141 Registered Nurses. Read on 2026-10-02 in the BLS OEWS Profiles tool. The figures are fixed constants on this page.
Why registered nurses
BLS has no ICU nurse series. The BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook lists critical care nurses as one type of registered nurse, so their pay is counted in code 29-1141.
Inputs used
Pay type, base pay, regular hours, weeks, shift differential and its share of hours, certification or charge pay, overtime hours and multiplier, other annual pay and an optional second offer.
Assumptions
A BLS work year is 2,080 hours. Wages are spread evenly between two published percentiles. Weekly extras repeat for every week you enter. Monthly is annual / 12, biweekly is annual / 26 and weekly is annual / 52.
Rounding
Money to the cent. Overtime and call-back rates are rounded to the cent before they are multiplied. The base rate is rounded to the cent before the BLS comparison. Approximate percentile to a whole number. Percent values to one decimal.
Edge cases
A base rate below the 10th or above the 90th percentile gets a band but no percentile number. Negative values, a multiplier below 1, more than 168 hours a week and more than 52 weeks return an error.
Not included
Tax, cost of living, experience and specialty adjustments. No specialty premium or multiplier is built in.

Frequently Asked Questions About ICU Nurse Salaries

How much do ICU nurses make a year?

BLS does not publish a figure for ICU nurses. It counts them as registered nurses, whose median annual wage was $97,550 in May 2025. The middle half of all registered nurses earned between $80,330 and $112,350, before overtime and shift differentials.

Do ICU nurses earn more than other registered nurses?

No official data answers that. BLS reports one wage distribution for all registered nurses and does not split it by hospital unit. Your own base rate, differential and overtime decide your pay, which is why this calculator asks for them.

How much is a night shift differential worth in a year?

It is worth the differential times the night hours you work. As an example, $4.00 an hour on 1,872 night hours adds $7,488 a year. Your hospital sets the rate, so use the figure in your own pay policy.

Does the BLS registered nurse wage include overtime and differentials?

No. BLS wages are straight-time gross pay. The survey excludes overtime pay, shift differentials and nonproduction bonuses. A hospital nurse with regular night or overtime work earns more than the BLS figure for the same base rate.

What is the CCRN certification and what does the exam cost?

CCRN is a critical care nursing certification from AACN Certification Corporation. The CCRN (Adult) exam costs $260 for AACN members and $375 for nonmembers. It requires a current, unencumbered RN or APRN licence and clinical practice hours with critically ill adults.

How many hours do I need for the CCRN exam?

The two-year option needs 1,750 hours of direct care of acutely or critically ill adult patients in the previous two years, with 875 in the most recent year. The five-year option needs 2,000 hours, with 144 in the most recent year.

How do hospitals figure overtime for nurses on 12-hour shifts?

Hospitals use either a 40-hour workweek or the 8 and 80 system. Under 8 and 80, overtime is paid after 8 hours in a day or 80 hours in a 14-day period, by prior agreement. The U.S. Department of Labor describes both systems in Fact Sheet 54.

How much does an ICU nurse make on three 12-hour shifts at the RN median?

At the national registered nurse median of $46.90 an hour, three 12-hour shifts a week for 52 weeks pay $87,796.80 before tax and before any differential. The same rate over 2,080 hours pays $97,552.00.

Does the calculator use a pay premium for cardiac, neuro or neonatal ICU?

No. No official source publishes pay by ICU type, so the tool has no unit premium. Enter the base rate and differentials from your own offer, and the result reflects your unit.

Why does the calculator not show take-home pay?

Take-home pay depends on your tax filing status, state and deductions, and this tool does not estimate tax. It shows gross pay only, so that you can check every figure against your pay stub.

Is my pay information saved?

No. The calculation runs in your browser and nothing is sent to a server. The Save button stores a result only on your own device.
