How to Use the Health Information Technician Salary Calculator

  1. Pick the BLS occupation that matches your duties: health information technologist or registrar, or medical records specialist. Then choose annual or hourly pay.
  2. Enter your base pay, your hours per week and your weeks per year. Add other annual pay or a second offer if you have them.
  3. Read your annual gross pay, the pay-period amounts and where your hourly pay sits in the BLS wage table.

What each result tells you:

What Is a Health Information Technician Salary?

A health information technician salary is the gross pay a health information worker earns in a year, before tax and deductions. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) has no code with that exact title. It splits the work between two codes.

BLS occupationWhat the role does (BLS)Typical entry educationJobs, 2025Outlook, 2025 to 2035
Health information technologists and medical registrars (29-9021)Advise organizations on computerized healthcare systems and analyze clinical data. Registrars keep disease databases, such as cancer registries.Associate degree. Some positions need a bachelor or master degree.42,00016% growth, about 3,000 openings a year
Medical records specialists (29-2072)Compile, process and maintain patient files. The code includes medical coders.Postsecondary certificate. Some qualify with a high school diploma.200,7008% growth, about 14,000 openings a year

These facts come from the BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, read on 2026-10-02. BLS gives the average growth for all occupations as 3%. Certification may be required or preferred in both roles.

The job title does not decide the code. The duties do. A technician who designs, supports or analyzes health data systems, or who runs a registry, belongs to 29-9021. A technician who mainly files, abstracts and codes patient records belongs to 29-2072.

This tool is for health information staff checking an offer, a raise or a move between the two roles. It is not a pay quote from any employer.

How Does the Health Information Technician Salary Calculator Work?

The calculator converts your pay between time periods, then places your hourly pay in the BLS wage distribution for health information technologists and medical registrars.

Formula: Annual pay = hourly rate x hours per week x weeks per year
Approximate percentile = P1 + (your hourly - W1) / (W2 - W1) x (P2 - P1)
  1. Convert. An hourly rate is multiplied by hours and weeks. A salary is divided by them to get pay per hour.
  2. Add other pay. Overtime, differentials and bonuses you typed are added to the annual total only.
  3. Find the band. Your base hourly pay is checked against the 10th, 25th, 50th, 75th and 90th percentile wages.
  4. Interpolate. W1 and W2 are the two BLS wages around your pay. P1 and P2 are their percentiles.
  5. Measure the gap. Your hourly pay minus the median, then divided by the median.

The table below is the health information technologist and medical registrar table, which the tool loads first. Switch the occupation to load the medical records specialist table.

Health Information Technologists and Medical Registrars (SOC 29-9021)Hourly wageAnnual wage

BLS annual wages equal the hourly wage times 2,080 hours. That is 40 hours for 52 weeks. The comparison uses hourly pay so that part-time and long-shift schedules are judged fairly.

Health Information Technician Salary Example: Two Offers

A health information technologist at a hospital earns $66,000 a year for a 40-hour week. An insurance carrier offers $74,000 for the same hours.

StepCalculationResult
Hourly pay66,000 / (40 x 52)$31.73
Monthly66,000 / 12$5,500.00
Biweekly66,000 / 26$2,538.46
BLS band31.73 is between 23.53 and 32.7025th to 50th percentile
Approximate percentile25 + (31.73 - 23.53) / (32.70 - 23.53) x 25About the 47th
Gap to median31.73 - 32.70-$0.97 an hour (-3.0%)
Second offer74,000 / (40 x 52)$35.58 an hour, +$8,000.00 a year
Second offer percentile50 + (35.58 - 32.70) / (45.98 - 32.70) x 25About the 55th

Her current pay sits just under the national median for her code. The offer moves her from about the 47th to about the 55th percentile.

The code matters. The same $66,000 measured against medical records specialists is between the 75th and 90th percentile, about the 76th. Pick the table that matches the duties, not the one that flatters the number.

Factors That Change Health Information Technician Pay

Which BLS Occupation You Are In

The occupation moves pay more than any other factor. The median for health information technologists and medical registrars is $68,020. The median for medical records specialists is $51,140. The gap is $16,880 a year.

Employer Type

Hospitals employ the most technologists and registrars, and they pay near the median. The Occupational Outlook Handbook lists these median annual wages for May 2025: management of companies $81,010, administrative and support services $75,560, professional, scientific and technical services $68,890, hospitals $67,480 and offices of physicians $54,670.

The wage survey counts 17,910 of these jobs in general hospitals. That is 47.0% of the total.

Industries with the Highest Mean Wage

Research firms and insurers pay the highest mean wages. Each employs far fewer technologists than hospitals do.

Education and Certification

BLS says entry usually needs an associate degree, and some positions need a bachelor or master degree. Employers may prefer certified candidates. BLS publishes no wage figure by degree or by credential, so this tool applies no credential multiplier.

Hours and Extra Pay

Most of these workers are full time. Overtime and on-call pay raise annual pay, and BLS leaves them out of its wage figures. A plain conversion without the comparison is on the salary to hourly calculator.

Health Information Technologist vs Medical Records Specialist Pay

A health information technologist or registrar at the median earns $8.11 an hour more than a medical records specialist at the median. The medians were $32.70 and $24.59 in May 2025.

The lower ends are close. The 10th percentile is $39,830 for technologists and $37,000 for records specialists. The upper ends are far apart: the 90th percentile is $117,420 against $81,150.

The records field is about five times larger, with 194,720 jobs against 38,100. Hospitals are the top employer of both.

Coding and records staff will find more detail on the medical coder salary calculator, which is built on the medical records specialist table. BLS notes that technologists and registrars sometimes advance to become medical and health services managers.

When to Use the Health Information Technician Salary Calculator

Checking a Job Offer

Read the duties in the posting, pick the matching occupation and enter the pay. The band shows where the offer sits nationally.

Planning a Move from Records to Systems Work

Switch the occupation to see how one rate ranks in each role. A wage of $27.50 an hour is near the 61st percentile for medical records specialists and near the 36th for technologists and registrars.

Comparing a Part-Time Schedule

Enter your own hours. In the third preset, $34.00 an hour for 36 hours pays $63,648.00 in base pay. The hourly rate is near the 52nd percentile, while the annual pay is near the 44th.

Budgeting

The result is gross pay. The gross vs net income guide explains what comes out before take-home pay. The general salary calculator covers other pay periods.

Common Mistakes with Health Information Pay Comparisons

1. Choosing the Code by Job Title

Employers use the title "health information technician" for both kinds of work. Choose by duties. Systems, analysis and registry work is 29-9021. Filing and coding work is 29-2072.

2. Comparing Records Pay with the Technologist Table

A records specialist paid $27.50 an hour is -$5.20 an hour against the technologist median. Against the correct table the same rate is +$2.91 an hour.

3. Adding a Credential Premium

BLS publishes no wage by credential. A fixed percentage for a certificate is a guess. Use real offers instead.

4. Treating the National Median as a Local Rate

The mean in California is $103,250. The national mean is $74,970. A national figure does not price a local market.

5. Folding Overtime into the Base Rate

BLS wages exclude overtime pay and nonproduction bonuses. Put them in the other annual pay field.

6. Reading the Percentile as Exact

BLS publishes five percentiles. The number between them is a straight-line estimate and can be off by several points.

Accuracy and Limitations

The conversion is exact arithmetic. The percentile is an estimate, because BLS publishes only five points of the wage distribution.

What it calculates accurately

  • Annual, monthly, biweekly, weekly and hourly gross pay from your own figures.
  • The BLS percentile band your hourly pay falls in.
  • The dollar and percent gap to the BLS national median.
  • The yearly difference between two offers on the same schedule.

What it does not account for

  • Federal, state and local tax, or any payroll deduction.
  • Your state, metro area, employer, experience or specialty.
  • Benefits such as health insurance, retirement match and paid leave.
  • Wages after May 2025. BLS updates the survey once a year.
  • Pay differences by degree, credential or software skill. BLS publishes none.

BLS wages are straight-time gross pay. They exclude overtime pay, shift differentials and nonproduction bonuses. Keep those in the other annual pay field so the comparison stays like for like.

How We Calculate Health Information Pay and Percentiles

Method
Pay-period conversion from your inputs. Percentile band and linear interpolation against BLS OEWS national hourly percentile wages. Annual base pay is also placed in the annual table.
BLS data
OEWS national estimates, May 2025, for 29-9021 Health Information Technologists and Medical Registrars, 29-2072 Medical Records Specialists. Read on 2026-10-02 in the BLS OEWS Profiles tool. The figures are fixed constants on this page.
Inputs used
Pay type, base pay, hours per week, weeks per year, other annual pay and an optional second offer.
Assumptions
A BLS work year is 2,080 hours. Wages are spread evenly between two published percentiles. Monthly is annual / 12, biweekly is annual / 26 and weekly is annual / 52.
Rounding
Money to the cent. Approximate percentile to a whole number. Gap percent to one decimal.
Edge cases
Pay below the 10th or above the 90th percentile gets a band but no percentile number. A percentile that BLS does not publish is shown as not published, and pay above the last published one is reported as at or above the BLS reporting limit. Zero or negative pay, hours above 168 and weeks above 52 return an error.
Not included
Tax, cost of living, experience and specialty adjustments. No such multiplier is used.
