How to Use the YouTube CPM by Niche Calculator
- In YouTube Studio, open Analytics and choose Advanced Mode. Create one group per niche or topic, such as tutorials, reviews and vlogs.
- For each group and one date range, note the ad impressions and the CPM. Add views and estimated ad revenue if you want the per-view columns.
- Paste one row per niche into the box. Read the weighted CPM, the spend each niche attracts and the table under the result.
What each result tells you:
| Result | What it means |
|---|---|
| Impression-weighted CPM | Total advertiser spend divided by total ad impressions, times 1,000. It is your real average CPM across the rows. |
| Highest and lowest CPM niche | The niches at each end of your own range, with the gap to your weighted average. |
| Highest to lowest ratio | How many times the top CPM exceeds the bottom CPM. |
| Total advertiser spend | Ad impressions x CPM / 1,000, added over all rows. It is before revenue share. |
| Largest share of spend | The niche that attracts most advertiser money, with its share of impressions. |
| Simple average CPM | The plain mean of the CPM column. The gap to the weighted figure shows why a plain mean misleads. |
What Is YouTube CPM by Niche?
YouTube CPM by niche is the cost advertisers pay per 1,000 ad impressions on one topic area of a channel. YouTube Help defines CPM as the cost an advertiser pays for 1,000 ad impressions, and it counts an ad impression any time an ad is displayed. A niche is a group of videos on one subject.
Creators compare CPM by niche to decide which topics to make more of, to explain revenue swings and to brief sponsors. The comparison helps channels with more than one content type, such as a channel that posts tutorials and vlogs.
Why this page has no niche table: YouTube publishes no CPM figure for any niche. Lists that give a fixed CPM for finance, gaming or health come from third-party estimates. They cannot tell you what advertisers pay on your videos, so this calculator reads only the rows you enter.
How Does the CPM by Niche Calculation Work?
The calculator turns each row into advertiser spend, adds the rows, and divides total spend by total impressions.
Advertiser spend = Ad impressions x CPM / 1,000. Weighted CPM = Total spend / Total ad impressions x 1,000.- Spend per niche = ad impressions x CPM / 1,000. This reverses the YouTube Help definition of CPM.
- Weighted CPM = sum of spend / sum of ad impressions x 1,000.
- CPM against your average = niche CPM / weighted CPM - 1, shown as a percentage.
- Share of impressions and share of spend = niche value / total value.
- With views and estimated ad revenue: ad revenue per 1,000 views = ad revenue / views x 1,000, and your share of spend = ad revenue / advertiser spend.
YouTube Help states that partners receive 55% of net revenue from ads on the watch page. The share-of-spend column lets you see how your own rows compare with that figure.
YouTube CPM by Niche Example
Example values only, not benchmarks. A channel groups its videos into four niches for one 28 day range.
| Niche | Ad impressions | CPM | Advertiser spend | Share of spend | CPM vs average |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tutorials | 180,000 | 9.40 | 1,692.00 | 38.2% | +21.9% |
| Product reviews | 95,000 | 14.20 | 1,349.00 | 30.4% | +84.2% |
| Vlogs | 240,000 | 4.10 | 984.00 | 22.2% | -46.8% |
| News commentary | 60,000 | 6.80 | 408.00 | 9.2% | -11.8% |
| All rows | 575,000 | 7.71 | 4,433.00 | 100.0% | +0.0% |
Total spend is 4,433.00 on 575,000 ad impressions, so the weighted CPM is 7.71. The simple average of the four CPM values is 8.62, which is +11.9% against the weighted figure. Product reviews has the highest CPM at 14.20, 3.46 times the 4.10 of Vlogs.
Meaning: Vlogs holds 41.7% of ad impressions but only 22.2% of advertiser spend. With estimated ad revenue of 2,399, the channel keeps 54.1% of that spend.
Factors That Change Your CPM by Niche
YouTube Help names three reasons why CPM moves, and each one affects niches differently.
Time of Year
Advertisers bid higher or lower at different times of year, and many bid higher just before holidays. Compare niches over the same date range.
Viewer Geography
Advertisers choose the geographies they reach, and competition differs by location. A niche that draws viewers from a different region shows a different CPM.
Ad Format Mix
Different ad types tend to have different CPMs. YouTube Help gives the example that more non-skippable ads in the inventory can raise CPM.
Sample Size
CPM is a rate per 1,000 impressions. A group with a few hundred impressions swings on one or two ads, so the calculator flags rows under 1,000 impressions.
CPM vs Playback-Based CPM vs RPM
CPM, playback-based CPM and RPM measure three different things, and YouTube Help defines each one.
| Measure | Per 1,000 of what | Revenue share | Use it for |
|---|---|---|---|
| CPM | Ad impressions | Before revenue share | What advertisers pay for each ad shown |
| Playback-based CPM | Video playbacks that showed one or more ads | Before revenue share | What advertisers pay per monetized playback |
| RPM | Views (engaged views for Shorts) | After revenue share | What you earn from all revenue sources |
YouTube Help notes that playback-based CPM is often higher than CPM, because one playback can show more than one ad. Enter the plain CPM here, with ad impressions. For a general advertiser-side sum, use the CPM calculator.
When to Use a CPM by Niche Calculator
Choosing What to Make Next
Rank your topics by CPM and by share of spend. A niche with a high CPM and few impressions is a candidate for more videos.
Explaining a Revenue Change
A drop in channel CPM often comes from a shift in mix. The weighted figure shows whether low-CPM videos took a bigger share of impressions.
Planning Ad Income
Take the CPM of the niche you plan to grow into the AdSense revenue calculator to turn planned views into an ad revenue estimate.
Common CPM by Niche Mistakes
1. Trusting a Published Niche Table
No niche CPM table is official. Your own groups are the only source for your channel.
2. Averaging CPM Values Directly
A plain mean gives a small niche the same weight as a large one. Weight by ad impressions.
3. Reading CPM as Earnings
CPM is before revenue share and counts only ads shown. YouTube Help says revenue does not equal CPM times views.
4. Mixing CPM Types
CPM pairs with ad impressions. Playback-based CPM pairs with estimated monetized playbacks. Mixing them distorts spend.
5. Mixing Date Ranges
A December CPM for one niche and a February CPM for another compare seasons, not topics.
6. Wrong Shares
Shares of spend come from simple division; the percentage calculator checks any single share by hand.
Accuracy and Limitations
The arithmetic is exact for the rows you enter, and it says nothing about channels other than yours.
What it calculates accurately
- Advertiser spend per niche from ad impressions and CPM
- The impression-weighted CPM across all rows
- Each niche against your own average, and shares of impressions and spend
- Ad revenue per 1,000 views and your share of spend, when you add those columns
What it does not account for
- Any official or typical CPM for a niche, which YouTube does not publish
- Future ad demand, season or changes in audience
- Memberships, Supers, Premium and sponsorship income
- Later adjustments to estimated revenue, and taxes
How We Calculate CPM by Niche
Titles and descriptions affect who finds each niche; the video SEO checklist covers that side.
Frequently Asked Questions About YouTube CPM by Niche
Does YouTube publish CPM by niche?
No. YouTube Help explains what CPM is and why it changes, but it lists no CPM for any niche. Niche tables online are third-party estimates.
How do I find CPM for one niche on my channel?
Create a group of videos for that niche in Advanced Mode, select the group, and add the CPM and ad impressions metrics. YouTube Help says a group holds up to 500 videos, playlists or channels.
What is a good CPM on YouTube?
YouTube sets no good or bad level. Compare each niche with your own weighted CPM, or set a target, and judge the trend over matching date ranges.
Why is the weighted CPM different from the average of my CPMs?
The weighted CPM counts each niche by its ad impressions. In the example, the weighted CPM is 7.71 and the simple average is 8.62.
Is CPM the money I earn per 1,000 views?
No. CPM is what advertisers pay per 1,000 ad impressions before revenue share. RPM is what you earn per 1,000 views after revenue share.
What share of advertiser spend do I keep?
YouTube Help states that partners receive 55% of net revenue from ads on the watch page. Add views and estimated ad revenue to each row to see your own ratio.
Which is higher, CPM or playback-based CPM?
Playback-based CPM is often higher. YouTube Help gives an example where 7.00 of spend over 2,000 impressions is a 3.50 CPM, and over 1,500 monetized playbacks is a 4.67 playback-based CPM.
Why did my CPM drop when my views went up?
New views often come from a niche, season or geography with lower advertiser demand. Split the period by group to see which rows gained impressions.
How many ad impressions does a niche need for a reliable CPM?
No official minimum exists. The calculator flags rows under 1,000 impressions, because CPM is a rate per 1,000 and a smaller sample swings widely.
Is my data saved?
No. The maths runs in your browser and nothing is sent to us. Save keeps a result only in this browser.
