What Date Was 3 Months Ago? The Month-End Rule

One month before March 31, 2026 is February 28, 2026. Thirty days before March 31 is March 1. Those two answers differ by a full day, and that gap explains how calendar months are counted back.

Quick Answer

Keep the day number and move the month back three. When that month is shorter, use its last day. From October 26, 2026, three months back is Sunday, July 26, 2026, which is 92 days earlier. The Months Ago From Today tool uses this month-end rule. Other tools can count month-ends differently.

What Months Ago Means and the Rule Behind It

A calendar month is not a fixed number of days. January has 31 days, April has 30, and February has 28 or 29. So subtracting months works on the month, not on a count of days.

The Months Ago From Today calculator follows one rule. It keeps your day number, moves the month back, and fixes the day only when the target month is too short. It also shows the weekday and the approximate days and weeks between the two dates.

The three-step method, shown for May 31, 2026 minus 1 month
Step What happens Result
1. Keep the day number The day stays the same 31
2. Move the month back May becomes April April 2026
3. Check the month length April has 30 days, so 31 becomes 30 Thursday, April 30, 2026

Step three is the month-end rule. It is the only step that ever changes a day number. In this example the two dates are 31 days apart.

Notice what the rule does not do. It never carries extra days into the next month, so the result always stays inside the target month. March 31 minus one month does not spill into early March.

The Month-End Rule in Four Examples

The rule matters only when the start day does not exist in the target month. Any start day from 1 to 28 exists in every month, so the rule never changes it. Days 29, 30 and 31 are the ones that move.

Four month-end cases (start day 31 each time)
Start date Months back Result Day change
March 31, 2026 1 Saturday, February 28, 2026 31 to 28
May 31, 2026 1 Thursday, April 30, 2026 31 to 30
October 31, 2026 4 Tuesday, June 30, 2026 31 to 30
January 31, 2026 2 Sunday, November 30, 2025 31 to 30
Start day versus result day under the month-end rule Four pairs of horizontal bars share one scale. Each navy bar is a start day of 31. Each teal bar below it is the result day. March 31 minus 1 month gives day 28, February 28. May 31 minus 1 month gives day 30, April 30. October 31 minus 4 months gives day 30, June 30. January 31 minus 2 months gives day 30, November 30. The start day is clamped to the target month’s last day Start day Result day

Mar 31, 1 month Day 31 Day 28 (Feb 28)

May 31, 1 month Day 31 Day 30 (Apr 30)

Oct 31, 4 months Day 31 Day 30 (Jun 30)

Jan 31, 2 months Day 31 Day 30 (Nov 30)

Bar length is the day number. Only February gives a bigger drop.

February shortens the day most; the 30-day months shorten it by one.

The January example crosses a year boundary. Two months before January 31, 2026 is November 2025, which has 30 days, so the result is November 30, 2025. The year changes on its own; you never adjust it by hand.

April 30 and June 30 are real last days, so the rule trims only one day there. February removes three days in a common year, the biggest cut in the table.

Leap Years Change February’s Last Day

A leap year gives February 29 days instead of 28. So the same start date can land on a different day in different years. Compare the first and second rows below.

How a leap year changes the result
Start date Months back Result Why
March 31, 2026 1 Saturday, February 28, 2026 2026 is not a leap year
March 31, 2028 1 Tuesday, February 29, 2028 2028 is a leap year
February 29, 2024 12 Tuesday, February 28, 2023 2023 has no February 29

The tool uses the Gregorian leap-year rule. A year divisible by four is a leap year, except when it is divisible by 100. Those century years are still leap years when they divide by 400. Wikipedia lists “the years 1700, 1800, and 1900 are not leap years”, while 1600 and 2000 are.

The third row shows a quiet effect. February 29, 2024 minus 12 months lands on February 28, 2023, because 2023 has no 29th. That span is 366 days, one more than a normal year. For the full story, read how leap years work or the leap year rule exceptions.

The Same Number of Months Gives Different Day Counts

Three months is not always 90 days. From October 26, 2026, three months back is July 26, 2026, which is 92 days. Other start dates give other counts, because the months you cross have different lengths.

Days between the start date and the result, by case
Start date Months back Result Days Weeks
March 31, 2026 1 February 28, 2026 31 4.4
October 26, 2026 3 July 26, 2026 92 13.1
August 31, 2026 6 February 28, 2026 184 26.3
October 26, 2026 12 October 26, 2025 365 52.1
March 31, 2026 13 February 28, 2025 396 56.6
Days between the two dates for five month counts Five bars start at zero and share one scale. March 31 back 1 month is 31 days. October 26 back 3 months is 92 days. August 31 back 6 months is 184 days. October 26 back 12 months is 365 days, shown in teal. March 31 back 13 months is 396 days. Days between the start date and the result

Mar 31, 1 month 31 days

Oct 26, 3 months 92 days

Aug 31, 6 months 184 days

Oct 26, 12 months 365 days

Mar 31, 13 months 396 days

Bars start at zero. Teal marks a full year, 12 months back.

Doubling the months does not exactly double the days.

Shorter spans show the same pattern. January 31, 2026 minus 2 months is 62 days, and October 31, 2026 minus 4 months is 123 days. A flat 30 days a month would give 60 and 120.

The 6-month case runs 184 days, about 30.7 days per month. A plain 12-month span is 365 days here, and the leap-year case from February 29, 2024 is 366.

Months Versus 30 Days, and Why the Weekday Moves

Back to the opening example. Counting 30 days before March 31, 2026 gives March 1. Counting one calendar month gives February 28, which is 31 days earlier. So “30 days ago” and “1 month ago” are different questions for that start date.

The weekday also shifts, and a short division shows why. A week has 7 days, so only the remainder matters. Here is how it works for three results from this article.

  • 92 days: 92 = 13 x 7 + 1, so the weekday moves back one day. Monday, October 26, 2026 becomes Sunday, July 26, 2026.
  • 365 days: 365 = 52 x 7 + 1, so again one day. Monday, October 26, 2026 becomes Sunday, October 26, 2025.
  • 31 days: 31 = 4 x 7 + 3, so three days. Tuesday, March 31, 2026 becomes Saturday, February 28, 2026.

The weekday stays the same only when the day count is an exact multiple of 7. Month spans rarely fit that pattern. To keep the same weekday, count whole weeks instead, since 13 weeks is exactly 91 days. For a related date idea, see day of year versus Julian date.

Quick Checks Before You Rely on a Date

Run through this list before you copy a date into a form.

  • Check the convention. The month-end rule is the tool’s method, and it is one common convention. Check how your contract or form counts months.
  • Read the start date. It defaults to today, and you can change it. The result line still says “from today”, so read the date in the box.
  • Mind the range. The tool takes a whole number of months from 1 to 600. Decimals are cut to a whole number.
  • Treat days as approximate. The tool shows the approximate days and weeks between the dates. Your own count may round differently.
  • Remember these are examples. Every date here is a worked example, so your own start date gives its own result.
  • Stay in the lane. This article covers counting back. Business days work differently; see how business day calculators count days.

FAQs About Counting Back Months

What date was 3 months ago from today?

Keep the day number and move the month back three. On October 26, 2026, that gives Sunday, July 26, 2026, which is 92 days earlier.

What is one month before March 31?

In 2026 it is February 28, because February has only 28 days. In the leap year 2028 it is February 29. Both results are 31 days earlier.

Is 3 months the same as 90 days?

No. Three months back from October 26, 2026 is 92 days. The count depends on which months you cross, since months have 28 to 31 days.

Why does the weekday change when I go back 3 months?

The span is not a multiple of 7 days. From October 26, 2026, 92 days is 13 weeks plus 1 day, so Monday becomes Sunday.

What is 12 months before February 29, 2024?

It is Tuesday, February 28, 2023. The year 2023 has no February 29, so the tool uses the last day of February. The span is 366 days.

How many months back can the tool count?

Any whole number from 1 to 600. Decimals are cut to a whole number, so 2.9 months counts as 2 months.

Do all calculators and contracts count month-ends the same way?

No. This is one common convention. Other software or contracts can count month-ends differently, so check how your contract or form counts months.
