What Is Fuel Cost?
Fuel cost is simply the price of the fuel a journey burns, and it depends on three things: how far you travel, how efficiently your vehicle uses fuel, and what the fuel costs per unit. Change any one and the total moves, which is why a long trip in a thirsty vehicle at a high pump price can cost several times more than a short, efficient one.
The tricky part is that economy is measured differently around the world. The United States uses miles per gallon, where higher is better, while most other countries use litres per 100 kilometres, where lower is better. This calculator handles both so you never have to convert by hand.
How the Fuel Cost Calculator Works
It works out how much fuel the distance needs, then multiplies that by the price per unit.
US: gallons = distance / mpg. Metric: litres = distance x (L/100km) / 100. Cost = fuel x priceIn US units, dividing the miles by the miles-per-gallon gives the gallons burned. In metric units, litres per 100 kilometres is multiplied by the distance and divided by 100 to give litres. Either way, the fuel used is then multiplied by the price to get the cost.

Because economy is defined in opposite directions across the two systems, the calculator uses a different step for each rather than converting between them.
Fuel Cost Example
Drive 300 miles in a car that does 30 miles per gallon, with fuel at 3.50 a gallon. The gallons used are 300 / 30 = 10, so the cost is 10 x 3.50 = 35, about 11.7 cents per mile.
Switch to metric for a 480-kilometre trip at 8 litres per 100 kilometres and 1.50 a litre. The litres used are 480 x 8 / 100 = 38.4, and the cost is 38.4 x 1.50 = 57.60, or 12 cents per kilometre.
Improve the US car to 40 miles per gallon and the same 300-mile trip drops to 7.5 gallons and about 26.25, showing how strongly economy drives the bill.
