How to Use the Psychiatrist Salary Calculator

  1. Choose annual salary or hourly rate, the way your contract states base pay.
  2. Enter your base pay, your hours per week and your weeks per year. Add other annual pay or a second offer if you have them.
  3. Read your annual gross pay, the pay-period amounts and where your hourly pay sits in the BLS wage table.

What each result tells you:

ResultWhat it means
Annual gross payBase pay for the year plus any other annual pay you entered, before tax.
Monthly, biweekly, weeklyAnnual gross pay divided by 12, 26 and 52.
HourlyBase pay per paid hour. This is the number compared with BLS.
BLS percentile bandThe two published BLS percentiles your hourly pay falls between.
Approximate hourly percentileA straight-line estimate between those two percentiles. BLS does not publish it. The verdict uses this number.
Annual base pay percentileThe same estimate for your yearly base pay against BLS annual wages, which assume 2,080 hours.
Gap to BLS medianYour hourly pay minus the BLS median hourly wage, in dollars and percent.
Full-time equivalentYour hourly pay times 2,080 hours, the work year BLS uses for annual wages.
Second offer rowsThe second offer as annual and hourly pay, its percentile and the yearly difference.

The first preset is an example, not a typical wage. It shows a psychiatrist on a $290,000 salary who works 40 hours a week for 48 weeks. That is $151.04 an hour, about the 60th percentile.

What Is a Psychiatrist Salary?

A psychiatrist salary is the gross pay an employed psychiatrist earns in a year, before tax and deductions. BLS counts it under occupation code 29-1223, Psychiatrists.

BLS calls psychiatrists primary mental health physicians. They diagnose and treat mental illnesses through psychotherapy, psychoanalysis, hospitalization and medication.

FactValue (BLS)
Wage survey jobs, May 202527,980 employees
Jobs in 2025, self-employed included30,000
Projected jobs in 203532,100, a rise of 7%
Growth for all physicians and surgeons4%
Typical entry educationBachelor degree, 4 years of medical school, then 3 to 9 years of internship and residency
LicenceRequired in every state

These facts come from the BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook and the OEWS wage survey, read on 2026-10-02. BLS links the growth to rising demand for psychiatric care and better access to mental health services.

Who the Wage Table Leaves Out

The BLS wage survey covers employees only. It does not cover self-employed psychiatrists or owners and partners of unincorporated practices. A psychiatrist in solo private practice is not in the table. That is one reason the 30,000 job count is larger than the 27,980 in the wage survey.

A psychiatrist is a physician. Counselors, marriage and family therapists and psychologists have their own BLS codes, covered by the therapist salary calculator.

How Does the Psychiatrist Salary Calculator Work?

The calculator converts your pay between time periods, then places your hourly pay in the BLS wage distribution for psychiatrists.

Formula: Annual pay = hourly rate x hours per week x weeks per year
Approximate percentile = P1 + (your hourly - W1) / (W2 - W1) x (P2 - P1)
  1. Convert. An hourly rate is multiplied by hours and weeks. A salary is divided by them to get pay per hour.
  2. Add other pay. Overtime, differentials and bonuses you typed are added to the annual total only.
  3. Find the band. Your base hourly pay is checked against the 10th, 25th, 50th, 75th and 90th percentile wages. Your annual base pay gets the same check against annual wages.
  4. Interpolate. W1 and W2 are the two BLS wages around your pay. P1 and P2 are their percentiles.
  5. Measure the gap. Your hourly pay minus the median, then divided by the median.

The table below is the full BLS wage table for psychiatrists that the tool uses.

BLS annual wages equal the hourly wage times 2,080 hours. That is 40 hours for 52 weeks. The comparison uses hourly pay so that part-time and long-shift schedules are judged fairly.

Psychiatrist Salary Example: an Hourly Outpatient Contract

A psychiatrist takes an outpatient clinic contract at $165 an hour. She is paid for 32 hours a week and 46 weeks a year. A second clinic offers $180 an hour for the same schedule.

Her hourly rate is well above the median of $135.51, at about the 69th percentile. Her yearly pay tells a different story. She is paid for 1,472 hours, 608 fewer than the 2,080 behind BLS annual wages. Her $242,880 a year sits at about the 42nd percentile of annual wages, below the $281,870 median. The second offer adds $22,080.00 a year.

Factors That Change Psychiatrist Pay

Paid Hours

Paid hours decide whether a high rate becomes a high income. At $165 an hour, 1,472 paid hours give $242,880 and 2,080 hours give $343,200.

Industry

No single industry employs most psychiatrists. Offices of physicians, the largest, employ 31.0% of those in the survey.

IndustryJobsShare of 27,980 jobs
Offices of Physicians8,68031.0%
General Medical and Surgical Hospitals4,93017.6%
Outpatient Care Centers3,13011.2%
Offices of Other Health Practitioners2,0507.3%

Other Ambulatory Health Care Services$340,800+$70,860
Local Government, excluding Schools and Hospitals$339,990+$70,050
Management of Companies and Enterprises$306,590+$36,650

Local government pays a mean of $339,990, with a relative standard error of only 1.4%. That makes it the most stable figure in the list.

State

Missouri has the highest annual mean wage for psychiatrists at $345,860. Its estimate has a 24.0% relative standard error, so the true figure is uncertain.

StateAnnual mean wage

California employs the most psychiatrists, 5,420, and New York follows with 4,130.

A Mean Below the Median

The mean wage, $269,940, is $11,930 below the median. A long low tail pulls the average down. The 10th percentile is $84,060 and the 25th is $154,150. BLS does not say which jobs make up that tail, and this page does not guess.

Psychiatrist Pay vs Other Physicians

Psychiatrists earn slightly more than the median for all physicians and surgeons. All figures are May 2025 medians from the Occupational Outlook Handbook, read on 2026-10-02.

OccupationMedian annual wageDifference from psychiatrists
Anesthesiologists$391,490+$109,620
Emergency medicine physicians$335,550+$53,680
Obstetricians and gynecologists$292,910+$11,040
Psychiatrists (29-1223)$281,8700
All physicians and surgeons$275,930-$5,940
General internal medicine physicians$256,560-$25,310
Neurologists$248,560-$33,310
Family medicine physicians$244,180-$37,690
Pediatricians, general$210,040-$71,830

The psychiatrist median is $5,940 above the all-physician median. Of the 17 physician occupations BLS lists, 11 have a higher median and 5 have a lower one.

Growth sets psychiatry apart more than pay does. BLS projects 7% growth for psychiatrists against 4% for all physicians and surgeons.

When to Use the Psychiatrist Salary Calculator

Pricing an Hourly Contract

Choose hourly and enter the hours and weeks you are paid for. The annual figure shows what the contract is worth over a year.

Comparing a Salary with an Hourly Offer

Run the tool once for each. Compare the two hourly figures, since each rests on its own schedule. The salary to hourly calculator converts a single figure quickly.

Checking a Public Sector Salary

Enter the posted salary and the standard week. The band shows the post against employed psychiatrists nationwide.

Moving into Private Practice

Practice profit is not a wage. Use the BLS table as an employee benchmark, then estimate the tax on self-employed income with the self-employment tax calculator.

Common Mistakes with Psychiatrist Pay Data

1. Annualising an Hourly Rate at 2,080 Hours

A contract rarely pays for 52 weeks of 40 hours. At $165 an hour, the gap between 2,080 hours and 1,472 paid hours is $100,320 a year.

2. Using the Mean as the Typical Wage

For psychiatrists the mean, $269,940, is below the median, $281,870. Half of employed psychiatrists earn more than the median.

3. Comparing Private Practice Income with Wages

The survey leaves out self-employed psychiatrists. Fees collected in a solo practice are not in the table.

4. Expecting a Subspecialty Figure

BLS has one wage table for all psychiatrists. It has no child, forensic, geriatric or addiction psychiatry table.

5. Trusting the Top State Figure

The Missouri mean has a 24.0% relative standard error. It is a weak guide to a single offer.

6. Reading Gross Pay as Take-Home Pay

Every figure here is before tax. The gross vs net income guide explains what comes out.

Accuracy and Limitations

The conversion is exact arithmetic. The percentile is an estimate, because BLS publishes only five points of the wage distribution.

What it calculates accurately

  • Annual, monthly, biweekly, weekly and hourly gross pay from your own figures.
  • The BLS percentile band your hourly pay falls in.
  • The dollar and percent gap to the BLS national median.
  • The yearly difference between two offers on the same schedule.
  • The approximate percentile of your annual base pay against BLS annual wages.

What it does not account for

  • Federal, state and local tax, or any payroll deduction.
  • Your state, metro area, employer, experience or subspecialty.
  • Benefits such as health insurance, retirement match and paid leave.
  • Wages after May 2025. BLS updates the survey once a year.
  • Income of self-employed psychiatrists and practice partners. BLS does not survey them.
  • Subspecialty. BLS reports one wage table for every psychiatrist.

BLS wages are straight-time gross pay. They exclude overtime pay, shift differentials and nonproduction bonuses. Keep those in the other annual pay field so the comparison stays like for like.

How We Calculate Psychiatrist Pay and Percentiles

Method
Pay-period conversion from your inputs. Percentile band and linear interpolation against BLS OEWS national percentile wages.
BLS data
OEWS national estimates, May 2025, for 29-1223 Psychiatrists. Read on 2026-10-02 in the BLS OEWS Profiles tool. The figures are fixed constants on this page.
Inputs used
Pay type, base pay, hours per week, weeks per year, other annual pay and an optional second offer.
Assumptions
A BLS work year is 2,080 hours. Wages are spread evenly between two published percentiles. Monthly is annual / 12, biweekly is annual / 26 and weekly is annual / 52.
Rounding
Money to the cent. Approximate percentile to a whole number. Gap percent to one decimal.
Edge cases
Pay below the 10th or above the 90th percentile gets a band but no percentile number. A percentile that BLS shows only as at or above its reporting limit is never filled in. Zero or negative pay, hours above 168 and weeks above 52 return an error.
Not included
Tax, cost of living, experience and specialty adjustments. No such multiplier is used.
