The Storage Formula

Daily MB = (photos × photo size) + (videos × video length × MB per second)

Total MB = daily MB × 365.25 × years

Videos are priced per second rather than per file, because a video's size scales with its duration. A 10 second snap at 0.35 MB per second is 3.5 MB. The same snap at 20 seconds is 7 MB.

Worked Example

Take 10 photos and 5 videos a day, videos averaging 10 seconds, at High quality:

• Photos: 10 × 0.9 MB = 9 MB
• Videos: 5 × 10 sec × 0.35 MB/sec = 17.5 MB
• Daily total: 9 + 17.5 = 26.5 MB
• One year: 26.5 × 365.25 = 9,679 MB, or about 9.68 GB

Decimal GB Versus Binary GiB

There are two definitions of a gigabyte in common use:

• Decimal GB: 1 GB = 1,000 MB = 1,000,000,000 bytes. This is how storage is sold and how iOS reports space.
• Binary GiB: 1 GiB = 1,073,741,824 bytes, which is 2 to the power of 30. Windows and many Android file managers use this but still label it GB.

The gap is about 7.4%. One decimal GB equals 0.9313 GiB, so any figure looks smaller when a device reports it in binary units while calling them gigabytes.

Which Number This Calculator Uses

The headline figure uses decimal GB, because that matches how you bought your phone and how your cloud plan is priced. The binary equivalent appears as a separate stat so you can match whichever number your device reports.
