How to Use the Long Ton to Kilogram Converter
- Keep the direction on Long tons to kilograms, or flip it to turn kilograms into imperial tons.
- Enter the long tons from a British, Irish, Australian or other Commonwealth source, such as an old ledger or a ship record.
- Read the kilograms. The cards also give tonnes, the pounds, hundredweight and stone, and how much heavier the load is than the same count of tonnes.

What Is a Long Ton?
A long ton is a British imperial unit of mass equal to 2,240 pounds, or exactly 1,016.0469088 kg. It is also called the imperial ton, the gross ton or the UK ton.
It sits at the top of the imperial mass ladder. Fourteen pounds make a stone, 112 pounds make a hundredweight, and 20 hundredweight make a ton. So one long ton is 160 stone.
The UK Weights and Measures Act 1985 still defines the ton as 2,240 pounds. It lists the ton in Schedule 1, Part VI, among units that may not be used for trade except as supplementary indications. In practice, British trade and industry now use the metric tonne of 1,000 kg.
In the US, Handbook 44 calls the same unit the gross or long ton. Americans meet it mainly in older records and some shipping and commodity use, since their everyday ton is the 2,000 lb short ton.
How Does Long Ton to Kg Conversion Work?
You multiply the long tons by 1,016.0469088, which is 2,240 x 0.45359237.
kg = long tons x 1,016.0469088 | reverse: long tons = kg / 1,016.0469088- Count the pounds in one long ton: 20 hundredweight x 112 lb = 2,240 lb.
- Change pounds to kilograms with the exact pound: 2,240 x 0.45359237 = 1,016.0469088 kg.
- Multiply by your tons. For 7 long tons: 7 x 1,016.0469088 = 7,112.3283616 kg.
The old tool on this page used 1,016.047, a rounded value. The difference is tiny, about 0.09 g per ton, but this version keeps the full exact factor.
Long Ton to Kilogram Examples
Family history. A 1920s letter says a coal merchant delivered 3 tons. In Britain that is 3 long tons: 3 x 1,016.0469088 = 3,048.1407264 kg, or about 3.05 tonnes.
Heavy lift. An old crane plate reads 25 tons. 25 x 1,016.0469088 = 25,401.17272 kg. Read as tonnes, it would be 401 kg short, so check which ton the plate means before you compare it with a modern load chart.
Hundredweight order. A farm record lists 15 cwt of feed. Fifteen hundredweight is 0.75 long ton, so 0.75 x 1,016.0469088 = 762.0351816 kg. The stone to pounds converter handles the smaller imperial steps.
Reverse. A metric quote gives 5,000 kg. 5,000 / 1,016.0469088 = 4.92103 long tons, which is 5.5116 US short tons.
Factors That Change Your Result
The factor is exact, so the checks below are about reading the source correctly.
Ton or Tonne
The spelling is one letter apart and the mass is only 1.6 percent apart, so this mix-up is easy to miss. A British document from before metrication almost always means the long ton. A modern one almost always means the tonne.
US or UK Origin
If the number came from the US, it is probably a 2,000 lb short ton. Using the long ton factor then adds 12 percent.
Mixed Imperial Figures
Records often give tons, hundredweight and pounds together, such as 2 tons 5 cwt 56 lb. Turn it all into tons first: 2 + 5/20 + 56/2,240 = 2.275 long tons.
Rounding
Rounding the factor to 1,016 kg drops about 0.005 percent. That is fine for history, but keep the full factor for engineering sums.
Long Ton vs Metric Tonne vs Short Ton
The long ton is the heaviest of the three, 16.05 kg above a tonne and 108.86 kg above a US short ton.
| Measure | Long ton (UK) | Metric tonne | Short ton (US) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kilograms | 1,016.0469088 | 1,000 | 907.18474 |
| Pounds | 2,240 | 2,204.62 (rounded) | 2,000 |
| Hundredweight | 20 long cwt | not used | 20 short cwt of 100 lb |
| Status in the UK | Supplementary only | Legal unit for trade | Not used |
A long ton is exactly 1.12 short tons, and a short ton is 0.892857 long ton. For UK body-weight figures in stone, the kg to stone converter works the other way.
When to Use a Long Ton to Kg Converter
Reading British and Commonwealth Records
Coal, grain, iron and cargo figures in older UK, Irish, Indian and Australian sources are in long tons. Converting to kilograms lets you compare them with modern data.
Old Equipment and Structures
Cranes, hoists, bridges and rail wagons built to imperial standards may carry ratings in tons. Convert to kilograms before you set them against a modern metric load.
Study and Puzzles
School tasks on the imperial system often ask for tons, hundredweight and stone in metric units. The imperial card shows every step at once. The metric to imperial converter covers length and volume too.

Common Long Ton to Kg Mistakes
1. Treating an Old British Ton as a Tonne
The error is only 16 kg per ton, so it looks harmless. Across 500 tons it is more than 8 tonnes.
2. Using the US Ton on UK Data
Multiplying by 907 instead of 1,016 makes every figure about 10.7 percent too light.
3. Using a 100 Lb Hundredweight
The British hundredweight is 112 lb. The US one is 100 lb. Mixing them skews any figure given in tons and cwt.
4. Confusing Mass Tons with Ship Tonnage
Gross register tonnage is a volume measure, not a mass. It cannot be converted to kilograms with this factor.
5. Dropping the Extra Imperial Parts
A record reading 4 tons 10 cwt is 4.5 long tons, not 4. Leave out the hundredweight and you lose 508 kg.
Accuracy and Limitations
The long ton to kilogram step is exact, so only the 12-figure display rounds.
What it calculates accurately
- UK long tons to kilograms and kilograms to long tons
- The same mass in tonnes and US short tons
- Pounds, hundredweight and stone for each ton
- The gap between a long ton and a tonne
What it does not account for
- Register tonnage, displacement rules or freight tons by volume
- Local or older ton variants outside the 1985 UK definition
- Mixed tons-cwt-lb entry in one box
- Scale error or the terms of a trade contract
