Ideal Weight Formula Comparison
What Do Ideal Weight Calculator Results Mean?
Your results show one BMI-based range and seven formula estimates. Start with the range. Treat each formula result as a reference point, not a required goal.
The CDC updated its BMI guidance in December 2025. It describes BMI as a quick screening measure and says individual health also depends on medical history, blood pressure, muscle mass, glucose, cholesterol, sleep, diet, and activity. BMI cannot separate fat, muscle, and bone mass.
If you entered a current weight, the tool also shows your present BMI category. For a full BMI breakdown, use our BMI Calculator. For a BMI-only weight interval without old IBW formulas, use the Healthy Weight Calculator.
Why Do Ideal Body Weight Formulas Disagree?
Each formula starts with a different base weight or rate of change. Most were built for clinical reference or from older height and weight tables. They were not designed to identify one perfect body weight.
The result spread makes this uncertainty visible. A larger spread does not mean your result is wrong. It shows that simple height-based models make different assumptions.
Which Ideal Weight Formulas Does the Calculator Use?
The calculator uses Devine, Robinson, Miller, Hamwi, Peterson, Broca, and Lorentz. The first four use weight at 5 feet plus a set amount for each inch above or below 5 feet.
| Ideal weight formula | Calculation | Best way to read it |
|---|---|---|
| Devine | Male: 50 + 2.3 × inches from 5 ftFemale: 45.5 + 2.3 × inches from 5 ft | A widely used clinical reference. Do not use it to set a drug dose on your own. |
| Robinson | Male: 52 + 1.9 × inchesFemale: 49 + 1.7 × inches | A later equation based on older height and weight tables. |
| Miller | Male: 56.2 + 1.41 × inchesFemale: 53.1 + 1.36 × inches | A modified formula with a smaller increase at taller heights. |
| Hamwi | Male: 48 + 2.7 × inchesFemale: 45.5 + 2.2 × inches | An older rule of thumb that often differs from newer formulas. |
| Peterson | 2.2 × target BMI + 3.5 × target BMI × (height m - 1.5) | A newer equation tied to a chosen target BMI. It does not use sex. |
| Broca | height cm - 100 | A simple historical height rule with limited personal detail. |
| Lorentz | (height - 100) - (height - 150) ÷ divisor | A sex-specific change to the Broca rule. |
The formula history is described in Pai and Paloucek's peer-reviewed review of ideal body weight equations. Peterson's 2016 paper tested a universal equation with U.S. NHANES data. Evidence is still limited for using any single estimate as a personal goal.
Ideal Weight Calculator Examples and Use Cases
The tool is most useful when you want to compare methods, understand a surprising result, or prepare questions for a health professional. These examples show safe ways to use it.
A 6-foot adult can see why Devine, Miller, Hamwi, and Peterson return different values. The spread shows model uncertainty.
A 5-foot-4 adult can enter current weight to compare present BMI with the adult screening range. This does not diagnose health.
A muscular adult may have a higher BMI because BMI cannot separate muscle from fat. The Body Fat Calculator may add useful context.
What Are the Limits of an Ideal Weight Calculator?
An ideal weight calculator cannot measure body fat, muscle, bone structure, health history, fitness, or lab results. It should not be used alone to judge health or plan treatment.
The CDC states that BMI cannot tell where fat is stored and cannot separate fat from lean mass. This matters for athletes, older adults, and people whose body composition differs from the population average.
These adult formulas are also not suitable for children, teens, or pregnancy. Disability, amputation, edema, and some medical conditions can change how height and weight measures should be read. Ask a qualified health professional when a result affects care.
Ideal Weight vs. Healthy Weight vs. Adjusted Weight
Ideal body weight formulas give single height-based estimates. A healthy weight calculator gives a BMI-based range. Adjusted body weight is a separate clinical calculation that may be used in some care settings.
Do not swap these terms in medication decisions. If a clinician asked for adjusted weight, use the Adjusted Body Weight Calculator only with their instructions.
Ideal Weight Calculator Questions
These short answers cover the questions people ask most about ideal body weight, BMI ranges, age, pregnancy, and formula choice.
Is there one ideal weight for my height?
No. The formulas give estimates based mainly on height. Health also depends on body composition, medical history, daily habits, physical findings, and lab results.
Which ideal weight formula is best?
No formula is best for every purpose. Devine is common in clinical references. Peterson connects weight to a chosen BMI. Use the method required by a qualified professional for clinical work.
Why does this ideal weight calculator ask for age?
Age is used only to block pediatric results. The seven adult formulas do not change with age. Children and teens need age-specific growth assessment.
Can athletes use an ideal weight calculator?
Athletes can compare estimates, but results may miss added muscle. The CDC notes that BMI cannot separate fat, muscle, and bone. Body composition can add context.
Can I use the calculator during pregnancy?
No. Pregnancy needs separate weight gain guidance based on pre-pregnancy factors and individual care. Use a pregnancy-specific tool and speak with your care team.
Does current weight change my ideal weight estimate?
Current weight changes only your BMI context on this page. Devine, Robinson, Miller, Hamwi, Broca, and Lorentz use height and formula constants. Peterson uses height and target BMI.
