Daily Feeding Guide
This calculator uses the Resting Energy Requirement (RER) formula widely accepted by veterinary nutritionists. The RER is calculated as: RER = 70 Γ (body weight in kg)0.75. For dogs weighing less than 2kg or more than 45kg, an alternative linear formula may be used for increased accuracy.
The Maintenance Energy Requirement (MER) is then calculated by multiplying RER by activity and life stage factors. These multipliers range from 1.2 for sedentary neutered adults to 3.0 for highly active working dogs or lactating females. Puppies require 2-3 times adult maintenance due to growth demands.
- Neutered Adult (Sedentary): RER Γ 1.2 - 1.4
- Intact Adult (Moderate): RER Γ 1.6 - 1.8
- Active Adult: RER Γ 2.0 - 3.0
- Puppy (0-4 months): RER Γ 3.0
- Puppy (4-12 months): RER Γ 2.0
- Senior Dog: RER Γ 1.2 - 1.4
- Weight Loss: RER Γ 1.0
- Pregnant (late): RER Γ 1.5 - 2.0
- Lactating: RER Γ 2.0 - 4.0 (based on litter size)
Protein and fat recommendations are based on AAFCO (Association of American Feed Control Officials) guidelines and NRC (National Research Council) standards. Results are estimates and individual dogs may vary. Always consult your veterinarian for personalized dietary advice, especially for dogs with health conditions.
