Calculate Any Year in the Past
What Does "X Years Ago From Today" Mean?
When we say something happened "X years ago from today," we mean you go back exactly X full years in the calendar from today's date. So if today is April 4, 2026, and you want to know what date was 5 years ago, you count back 5 years to April 4, 2021. Same month, same day — just a different year.
The phrase is really simple once you think about it. You are just subtracting years from today's date. The day and month stay the same. The only thing that changes is the year number. This makes "years ago" one of the easiest date calculations to understand.
There is one small catch. If today is February 29 (a leap day), some years in the past did not have a February 29. In that case, the calculator adjusts to February 28 to give you a valid date. This only matters for one day every four years, so it almost never comes up.

Years as a Unit of Time — A Quick Explainer
A year is 365 days long in a regular year. Every four years, we add a leap day (February 29), making that year 366 days. This keeps our calendar lined up with how long it actually takes Earth to go around the Sun (about 365.25 days).
When you subtract years from a date, you are not literally counting 365 days over and over — you are just changing the year number. This is why going back 5 years from April 4, 2026 gives you April 4, 2021, not a complicated count of 1,825 days.
