How the Chinese Zodiac Year Is Worked Out

Born on February 10, 2026? Your Chinese zodiac animal is the Snake, not the Horse. The Horse year only began on February 17, 2026, so the first 47 days of that calendar year still belonged to the Snake.

This guide shows how the animal and element come straight from the year number. It also explains why the zodiac year starts at Lunar New Year, and why that date moves around. You will learn exactly when a January or February birthday needs a second look.

Key Takeaways

  • The 12 animals run in a fixed order from Rat to Pig, so each animal returns every 12 years.
  • Each of the 5 elements covers two years in a row, one yang and one yin, which builds a 60-year cycle.
  • The zodiac year starts at Lunar New Year, which fell between January 21 and February 20 in every year from 1901 to 2100.
  • 2026 is the Yang Fire Horse year, starting February 17, 2026. The last Fire Horse year began on January 21, 1966.

Twelve Animals, Five Elements and a 60-Year Loop

The Chinese zodiac gives each year one of 12 animals. The order never changes: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig. The Lam Museum of Anthropology at Wake Forest University traces a zodiac system back to the Qin dynasty, more than 2,000 years ago.

The animals sit on top of an older counting system. There are 12 “earthly branches” and 10 “heavenly stems.” Each stem pairs one of 5 elements (wood, fire, earth, metal, water) with yang or yin. That is why every element lasts two years: first a yang year, then a yin year.

Stems and branches advance together, one step per year. The 10-step and 12-step wheels only line up again after 60 years, because 60 is the smallest number both 10 and 12 divide into. So an exact pairing such as Fire Horse returns once every 60 years: 1966, 2026, then 2086.

One full animal cycle, 2020 to 2031 Twelve equal cells, one per year from 2020 Rat to 2031 Pig. A bar under the cells shows the element for each pair of years: Metal 2020 and 2021, Water 2022 and 2023, Wood 2024 and 2025, Fire 2026 and 2027, Earth 2028 and 2029, Metal 2030 and 2031. The animal changes every year, while the element changes every two years.

How Is Your Animal and Element Worked Out?

Subtract 4 from the year, divide by 12, and the remainder picks the animal. The year’s last digit picks the element, and even or odd picks yang or yin.

  1. Find your zodiac year. Compare your birth date with that year’s Lunar New Year. Born before it? Use the previous year number for every step below.
  2. Take the remainder. Work out (year minus 4) divided by 12 and keep the remainder. For 2024, 2020 divided by 12 leaves 4.
  3. Count the animals. Count from Rat as 0. Remainder 4 is Dragon, and remainder 6 is Horse.
  4. Read the last digit. Digits 0 and 1 are Metal, 2 and 3 Water, 4 and 5 Wood, 6 and 7 Fire, and 8 and 9 Earth.
  5. Check even or odd. Even years are yang and odd years are yin.

Our calculator’s own example is the year 2024. Step 2 gives remainder 4, so the animal is Dragon. The last digit is 4, so the element is Wood. The year is even, so the answer is the Yang Wood Dragon, the same result the tool shows.

The tool’s second example is 1990. Here 1986 divided by 12 leaves 6, which is Horse. The last digit 0 means Metal, and the even year means yang. That makes 1990 a Yang Metal Horse. Run 2026 the same way and you get remainder 6 and digit 6: the Yang Fire Horse.

Why Does the Zodiac Year Start in January or February?

The zodiac year follows the traditional Chinese calendar, which starts each year at Lunar New Year. That calendar tracks both the moon and the sun, so its New Year lands on a different Gregorian date every year.

The Hong Kong Observatory explains that each month starts with a new moon. Twelve moon months add up to only 354.3672 days. That is 10.875 days shorter than a solar year of 365.2422 days.

So Lunar New Year slides about 11 days earlier each year. Then a leap month is added, and the date jumps back later. The calendar adds 7 leap months every 19 years. That is a whole extra month, unlike the single extra day in our guide to how leap years work.

We checked all 200 of the Observatory’s conversion tables from 1901 to 2100. Lunar New Year never fell before January 21 or after February 20. It fell in January in 70 of those years and in February in 130.

When a January or February Birthday Changes the Answer

Any birth from January 1 through February 20 needs a date check. From 1901 to 2100, births from February 21 onward always fall in the zodiac year that matches the calendar year.

Take two people born in 1990. One was born January 25, 1990, and the other on January 30. The 1990 Lunar New Year fell on January 27. So the first person belongs to the 1989 year, a Yin Earth Snake. The second is a Yang Metal Horse.

The same trap catches births around 2000. That Lunar New Year was February 5, 2000. A birth on January 30, 2000 counts as the 1999 year, a Yin Earth Rabbit, not the Metal Dragon.

Lunar New Year dates and the year that begins
Lunar New Year Zodiac year that begins
January 29, 2025 Yin Wood Snake
February 17, 2026 Yang Fire Horse
February 6, 2027 Yin Fire Goat
January 26, 2028 Yang Earth Monkey

Zodiac years and ages count differently, too. Your animal returns at ages 12, 24, 36 and so on. For the plain age math, see our guide on how old you will be in a given year.

Zodiac Lookup Slips and Better Habits

A wrong answer usually traces back to one of the five slips below. The table pairs each slip with a better habit.

Frequent zodiac lookup errors and fixes
Mistake Better approach
Using the calendar year for a January birth Check that year’s Lunar New Year first. A January 25, 1990 birth is a Snake, not a Horse.
Assuming Lunar New Year is always in February It fell in January in 70 of the 200 years from 1901 to 2100.
Expecting the same animal and element every 12 years The animal returns every 12 years, but the exact pairing returns every 60.
Giving each element one year Each element lasts two years, a yang year and then a yin year.
Treating the sign as a personality test Enjoy it as culture and calendar history. It is not a scientific forecast.

The Lam Museum notes that traditions tie each animal to attributes, luck and even marriage choices. Those are cultural beliefs, and this guide does not treat them as facts about anyone.

Try it with a birthday you know. Enter the year in the zodiac year calculator, then compare the date with the table above.

The Chinese Zodiac: Frequently Asked Questions

What Chinese Zodiac Year Is 2026?

2026 is the Yang Fire Horse year. It began on February 17, 2026 and runs until the next Lunar New Year on February 6, 2027.

What Animal Am I If I Was Born in January?

It depends on that year’s Lunar New Year date. Born before it, you belong to the previous year’s animal. For example, January 25, 1990 falls in the Snake year.

Why Does Lunar New Year Change Every Year?

The traditional calendar starts each month at a new moon. Twelve moon months total 354.3672 days, so the date slips earlier, and a leap month then pushes it later again.

What Is the Earliest and Latest Date for Lunar New Year?

In the Hong Kong Observatory tables for 1901 to 2100, the earliest date is January 21 and the latest is February 20.

How Often Does the Same Animal and Element Come Back?

Every 60 years. The animal repeats every 12 years and the element pair every 10, and 60 is the first number both divide into.

How Do I Find My Element From My Birth Year?

Use the last digit of your zodiac year. 0 and 1 are Metal, 2 and 3 Water, 4 and 5 Wood, 6 and 7 Fire, and 8 and 9 Earth.

Is It the Year of the Rat or the Mouse?

They are the same first animal of the cycle. The Hong Kong Observatory labels 2020 the year of the Mouse, while the Lam Museum list calls it the Rat.

Can the Chinese Zodiac Predict Personality?

No. The zodiac is a cultural tradition and a way of naming years, not a scientific test. Treat any personality reading as folklore, not fact.
