How Accurate Are Wearable Calorie Estimates?

Wearable calorie estimates vary by device, activity, intensity, body characteristics, and study method. Good heart-rate accuracy does not guarantee good energy-expenditure accuracy.

A 2024 living umbrella review found that wearables tended to underestimate energy expenditure across a meta-analysis of 64 studies. Primary-study errors ranged from about −21% to +15%, but researchers warned that device and study variation made broad accuracy claims unsafe.

Another systematic review covered 158 publications and nine consumer brands. It found stronger validity for steps and heart rate than for energy expenditure. This is why the calculator does not assign accuracy by brand alone.

Use the same activity, duration, calorie definition, device position, and reference method. Repeat several sessions instead of relying on one workout.
