Volume load is also called tonnage. It is useful for comparing the same exercise over time. It does not make a 1,000-pound leg-press total equal to a 1,000-pound shoulder-press total.

A person lifts 60 lb for 8 reps at RPE 8. RPE 8 suggests about 2 repetitions remained, so adjusted reps equal 10. Epley gives 60 x (1 + 10 / 30) = 80 lb. Brzycki gives 60 x 36 / 27 = 80 lb. The displayed e1RM is 80 lb.

If the person completes 2 sets twice weekly, exercise volume equals 60 x 8 x 2 = 960 lb per session. Weekly exercise volume is 1,920 lb. These are workload estimates, not proof that the body absorbed the same stress each day.
