How to Use the Psychologist Salary Calculator
- Pick your psychologist type: clinical or counseling, school, industrial-organizational, or all other. Then choose annual or hourly pay.
- Enter your base pay, your hours per week and your weeks per year. Add other annual pay or a second offer if you have them.
- Read your annual gross pay, the pay-period amounts and where your hourly pay sits in the BLS wage table.
What each result tells you:
| Result | What it means |
|---|---|
| Annual gross pay | Base pay for the year plus any other annual pay you entered, before tax. |
| Monthly, biweekly, weekly | Annual gross pay divided by 12, 26 and 52. |
| Hourly | Base pay per paid hour. This is the number compared with BLS. |
| BLS percentile band | The two published BLS percentiles your hourly pay falls between. |
| Approximate percentile | A straight-line estimate between those two percentiles. BLS does not publish it. |
| Gap to BLS median | Your hourly pay minus the BLS median hourly wage, in dollars and percent. |
| Full-time equivalent | Your hourly pay times 2,080 hours, the work year BLS uses for annual wages. |
| Second offer rows | The second offer as annual and hourly pay, its percentile and the yearly difference. |
The first preset is an example, not a typical wage. It shows a clinical psychologist on $96,000 a year for 40 hours a week. That is $46.15 an hour, about the 46th percentile for clinical and counseling psychologists.
What Is a Psychologist Salary?
A psychologist salary is the gross pay a psychologist earns in a year, before tax and deductions. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports it under four occupation codes, because the work and the training differ.
| Type (BLS code) | What the role does (BLS) | Typical education | Jobs, 2025 | Outlook, 2025 to 2035 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Clinical and counseling (19-3033) | Assesses, diagnoses and treats mental, emotional and behavioral disorders. | Doctoral degree, Ph.D. or Psy.D. | 81,300 | 12% growth |
| School (19-3034) | Addresses educational, behavioral and developmental problems that affect learning. | Master degree or higher in school psychology | 64,000 | 1% growth |
| All other (19-3039) | Psychologists not listed separately. The Handbook names forensic, neuro and rehabilitation psychologists as examples. | Master or doctoral degree | 60,000 | 2% growth |
| Industrial-organizational (19-3032) | Applies psychology to workplace problems such as employee selection and training. | Master degree | 4,000 | 6% growth |
The job counts and outlook come from the BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, read on 2026-10-02. BLS projects 6% growth for psychologists overall and about 11,300 openings a year.
BLS publishes no separate wage table for neuropsychologists or forensic psychologists. They fall under all other psychologists. This page therefore has no specialty selector beyond the four codes.
The therapist salary calculator also uses the clinical and counseling table. It sets that table beside counselors and marriage and family therapists. This page covers psychologists only.
The tool is for psychologists checking an offer or a raise. It is not a pay quote from any employer.
How Does the Psychologist Salary Calculator Work?
The calculator converts your pay between time periods, then places your hourly pay in the BLS wage distribution for psychologists.
Annual pay = hourly rate x hours per week x weeks per yearApproximate percentile = P1 + (your hourly - W1) / (W2 - W1) x (P2 - P1)- Convert. An hourly rate is multiplied by hours and weeks. A salary is divided by them to get pay per hour.
- Add other pay. Overtime, differentials and bonuses you typed are added to the annual total only.
- Find the band. Your base hourly pay is checked against the 10th, 25th, 50th, 75th and 90th percentile wages.
- Interpolate. W1 and W2 are the two BLS wages around your pay. P1 and P2 are their percentiles.
- Measure the gap. Your hourly pay minus the median, then divided by the median.
The table below is the clinical and counseling psychologist wage table the tool loads first. Switch the occupation to load another psychologist table.
| Clinical and Counseling Psychologists (SOC 19-3033) | Hourly wage | Annual wage |

BLS annual wages equal the hourly wage times 2,080 hours. That is 40 hours for 52 weeks. The comparison uses hourly pay so that part-time and long-shift schedules are judged fairly.
Psychologist Salary Example: Clinical Psychologist with Two Offers
A licensed clinical psychologist earns $96,000 a year at a group practice. He works 40 hours a week for 52 weeks. A hospital offers $108,000 for the same hours.
| Step | Calculation | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Hourly pay | 96,000.00 / (40 x 52) | $46.15 |
| Monthly | 96,000.00 / 12 | $8,000.00 |
| Biweekly | 96,000.00 / 26 | $3,692.31 |
| BLS band | 46.15 is between 35.20 and 48.36 | 25th to 50th percentile |
| Approximate percentile | 25 + (46.15 - 35.20) / (48.36 - 35.20) x 25 | About the 46th |
| Gap to median | 46.15 - 48.36 | -$2.21 an hour (-4.6%) |
| Full-time equivalent | Hourly pay x 2,080 | $96,000.00 |
| Second offer | Entered as annual pay | $108,000.00, +$12,000.00 a year |
His current pay sits just below the national median of $48.36 an hour for clinical and counseling psychologists. The hospital offer adds $12,000.00 a year and lands at about the 55th percentile. Both figures are gross pay for an employee. A psychologist in private practice has business income, which this comparison does not cover.

State
Washington has the highest annual mean wage for clinical and counseling psychologists at $137,530. California leads for school psychologists at $127,830.
| State | Annual mean wage |
|---|---|
| Washington | $137,530 |

Employee or Self-Employed
The Handbook reports that 23% of psychologists are self-employed. The BLS wage survey leaves out the self-employed. Practice owners should read the tables as employee pay. The self-employment tax calculator estimates the extra tax on practice income.
Hours and Contract Length
Part-time work is common for psychologists, according to the Handbook. The tool compares hourly pay so that part-time schedules are judged fairly. The salary to hourly calculator gives a quick conversion without the BLS comparison.
Clinical vs School vs Industrial-Organizational Psychologist Pay
Industrial-organizational psychologists have the highest median wage and school psychologists have the lowest. The four BLS tables for May 2025 are below.
| Occupation | 10th | 25th | Median | 75th | 90th | Mean | Jobs |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Clinical and counseling (19-3033) | $55,170 | $73,210 | $100,580 | $135,200 | $180,960 | $112,750 | 75,990 |
| School (19-3034) | $63,070 | $77,470 | $95,990 | $120,310 | $142,330 | $99,160 | 63,940 |

The job counts in this table come from the wage survey, which excludes the self-employed. They are lower than the Handbook counts above.
The industrial-organizational figures rest on only 790 surveyed jobs. BLS reports a relative standard error of 8.1% on the mean wage and 16.9% on employment for this code. Treat its percentiles as rough.
The clinical and counseling range is the widest. The 90th percentile, $180,960, is 3.3 times the 10th percentile, $55,170.
Psychologist Pay by Employer
Government employers pay psychologists the highest median. The Handbook gives these figures for all psychologists in May 2025.
| Employer group | Share of jobs | Median annual wage |
|---|---|---|
| Government, excluding state and local education and hospitals | 8% | $130,960 |
| Ambulatory healthcare services | 25% | $98,590 |
| Hospitals; state, local, and private | 5% | $96,850 |
| Elementary and secondary schools; local | 24% | $95,230 |

When to Use the Psychologist Salary Calculator
Checking a Job Offer
Pick your psychologist type and enter the offered salary. The band shows whether the offer is in the lower or upper half of national pay for that type.
Comparing a School Contract
A school psychologist on $88,500 ranks at about the 40th percentile with 40 hours and 52 weeks. BLS builds its annual wage from 2,080 hours. Entering 42 paid weeks raises the hourly figure to $52.68. Run both and read both.
Moving Between Psychologist Types
Switch the occupation to see how one rate ranks in another table. $55.00 an hour is about the 52nd percentile for all other psychologists.
Budgeting After Tax
The result is gross pay. Read the gross vs net income guide before you plan a household budget from it.
Common Mistakes with Psychologist Pay Comparisons
1. Comparing Practice Revenue with a Wage
Client fees are revenue. Rent, insurance, billing costs and unpaid hours come out of them. BLS wages describe employees. Compare the salary you pay yourself, not gross billings.
2. Picking the Wrong Type
A school psychologist compared with the industrial-organizational table looks far below the median. Choose the code that matches the job.
3. Looking for a Neuropsychologist or Forensic Table
BLS has none. Both fall under all other psychologists, code 19-3039. Any specialty figure quoted elsewhere does not come from this data.
4. Confusing Psychologists with Psychiatrists
A psychiatrist is a physician with a separate BLS code, 29-1223. Psychiatrist wages do not describe psychologists.
5. Treating the National Median as a Local Rate
The mean wage for clinical and counseling psychologists in Washington is $137,530. The national mean is $112,750. A national figure does not price a local market.
6. Reading the Percentile as Exact
BLS publishes five percentiles. The number between them is a straight-line estimate and can be off by several points.
Accuracy and Limitations
The conversion is exact arithmetic. The percentile is an estimate, because BLS publishes only five points of the wage distribution.
What it calculates accurately
- Annual, monthly, biweekly, weekly and hourly gross pay from your own figures.
- The BLS percentile band your hourly pay falls in.
- The dollar and percent gap to the BLS national median.
- The yearly difference between two offers on the same schedule.
- Which of the four BLS psychologist tables your pay is ranked against.
What it does not account for
- Federal, state and local tax, or any payroll deduction.
- Your state, metro area, employer, experience or specialty.
- Benefits such as health insurance, retirement match and paid leave.
- Wages after May 2025. BLS updates the survey once a year.
- Self-employment income, practice expenses and unbilled hours.
- Degree (Ph.D., Psy.D. or master) and specialty within a code. BLS publishes no wage by these.
BLS wages are straight-time gross pay. They exclude overtime pay, shift differentials and nonproduction bonuses. Keep those in the other annual pay field so the comparison stays like for like.

Why does the calculator not show take-home pay?
Take-home pay depends on your filing status, state and deductions, and this tool does not estimate tax. It shows gross pay only, so every figure can be checked against your offer letter or pay stub.
Is my pay information saved?
No. The calculation runs in your browser. Nothing is sent to a server. The Save button stores a result only on your own device.
